Why is putting Ross in the slot a good decision?

Sep 19, 2021, 7:47 PM

Ngata looks more aggressive and Ross has dominated the boundary. Also, seems Will Taylor would be a great slot player.

Ngata can cause a lot of problems in the slot. He has definitely shown flashes. Hopefully that personnel group gels.

Short area quickness in a phone booth is generally #1 skill required for success in the slot (+ good hands). The prototypical NFL slot rec. is not 6'2" +, tried this before w/ Overton.

It seems like there are several combos that could be fruitful. Not sure if Maverick is ready to go at WR yet. But he will be electric whenever he closes that gap.

He may not be ready as you'd like but imo, he would make more good plays than bad and that's more than what we've got now.

Cash it in and play for next year, as Dabo says,
14 points against ga tech is what we got. Is what it is.

Ross in the slot is a terrible decision, as he just came back from a potentially paralyzing neck injury, so Elliott puts him in the slot where he is most exposed with crossing routes, etc!! Mentally, do ya think he might be a bit hesitant to run those routes or take those hits?? I sure as heck would be, but I'm not Ross, just sayin'!

I thought they moved him to the slot to protect him, and to get our 3 best WRs on the field at the same time (along with Ngata and Larson).

The problem is that he’s a long strider. Where his skillful use of his size might make him an easier target, his ability to achieve Yards After the Catch is greatly compromised. Plus, as you said, he’s making catches in LB and Safety country instead of against Corners where he could easily dominate.

Last year DJ excelled throwing the deep ball to Powell (who frequently had to adjust to the ball) and the underneath to Amari, who had good hands and was a good route runner but possessed excellent speed and strength. He got lots of YAC.

So far our OL hasn’t given DJ the time to throw deep, and Tech’s 3-deep zone prevented it anyway. But that same zone should have given us better opportunities underneath. Not sure how to get DJ to be more accurate and quicker with his reads.

DJ needs to develop "touch" and not feel as though he has throw the short passes like rockets. If you look at his 2 games last year and his HS career, many of his passes we long shots and those type of passes worked with his power arm. He may not realize how hard he is throwing those short ones.

Also, many of his high passes may be due to the fact that he is not stepping forward onto his front foot and throwing off his back foot. Look at the videos on this high throws and see what you think. I'm sure the coaches see this too. Anyone else notice this?

Ngata is no better in the slot. Ross is a better route runner so it would give him an edge, regardless they are both big bodied receivers who don’t have the quickness to create the separation needed in the slot. We have three possession receivers who have really good top end speed but with their big bodies they have to get to that gear. We are missing the Amari Rodgers type in the slot that we really need. In fact two of those guys with a Justyn Ross would be ideal in a 3 wide receiver set.
