FOOTBALL:
2024: 22nd 2023: 21st 2022: 21st 2021: 11th 2020: 3rd
Football AVG: 16
BASKETBALL:
2024: 53rd 2023: 22nd 2022: 73rd 2021: 61st 2020: 31st
Basketball AVG: 48
Obviously ACC football carried more national weight over the last five years than has ACC basketball.

rinse and repeat arguments, again, again, and again.
how about the Tigers are winning in both football and basketball despite schedules? Please show me another example of a fanbase that does that any the two major sports?
How come there is never any arguments to football and baseball?

It's probably more just T-Net than the 'fanbase' in general with that due to the trolling Tater hater we have here. She's a pro.

Plus it’s not a fanbase issue. It's basically one divisive poster on this message board as far as all that goes. Lives to stir up the board, aka troll.
As for me, I hope we win them all in all sports. I’m happy about the basketball success last year and so far this year. I look forward to deep runs in the ACCT and NCAAT. It should be expected with all the resources the program has and all the time the coach has been given.

Always backhanded. Well he's had enough time, blah, blah, blah. How about the glass half full approach? In 15 years at Clemson, he has had 14 winning seasons. Seven 20-win seasons. He has won 141 ACC games and has a winning record in the ACC. The best ACC record behind BroWnell -- Cliff Ellis 59-100. Every other coach in Clemson history has had a losing record in the ACC. Every. Single. One. Cue the "Well the ACC Sucks" crowd. That's not Clemson's fault. The Tigers don't suck and have won most of their games in the sucking ACC by double digits. Coach BroWnell deserves more respect from the whiney Clemson fan base. The segment of the fan base that is waiting to pounce when the Tigers lose a game. Have you goobers looked around college basketball? Kansas is getting drilled. N.C. State, a Final Four team last year, is not going to make the ACC Tournament this year. Two-time defending national champion UConn only stays in the news because their coach is constantly showing his ###. There are surprises every night. Teams lose games. Consistency in today's college basketball environment should be applauded. Coach BroWnell has built a solid, consistent program. This team deserves a whole lot more respect than it is getting from its own fan base. Enjoy the ride instead of always trying to take the tires off the vehicle.

If you think the ACC is better in football than basketball, then you are not very bright. What was our 2 toughest games last year? Louisville at home and & at Pitt?

Toughest league game was probably SMU for the ACC championship. They were also a playoff team like us.
ACC basketball would need 11 teams to make the NCAAT's field of 68 to match the two of 12 in the CFP for football. Nice try, though. Maybe be brighter next time?

True, but there are some inconsistencies in the comparison.

I’m assuming you are looking at TeamRankings SOS. If so, then here’s what I mean…
1) The SOS is for the entire year. Note that the higher SOS ranked teams each year are the playoff teams for football. Essentially each playoff team got a bump in SOS just by making the playoffs.
2) Similarly, the SOS rankings for basketball are inflated for teams that make longer tourney runs or have harder out of conference schedules.
3) Football only plays roughly 75% of in conference games while basketball plays 50%. It’s not an apples to apples comparison for how tough a conference is given unless you adjust for that disparity.
4) Given the variation present due to each teams out of conference ranking or playoff longevity, this comparison doesn’t exactly suggest that ACC football has been better than ACC basketball. It does suggest that Clemson football has had a harder SOS relative to Clemson basketball over the last 5 years.

That depends on the data you are comparing.
Feb 20, 2025, 5:37 AM

Currently, your data supports the hypothesis that Clemson football has had a tougher overall SOS.
However, arguing that ACC football has carried more weight means you have to take the out-of-conference games out of those SOS calculation. For instance, in 2021, Clemson had the 11th hardest overall SOS as you mentioned. But one of the games included for that SOS calculation was the game against #5 Georgia. Removing that and all other out of conference games and Clemson had the 30th ranked SOS, per TeamRankings in conference SOS ranking.
Thus, if you want to compare Clemson’s ACC SOS, you should use TeamRankings in conference SOS for those years instead.
Football:
2020: 5th 2021: 30th 2022: 45th 2023: 32nd 2024: 55th
Football Average: 33.4
Basketball:
2020: 41st 2021: 66th 2022: 68th 2023: 61st 2024: 65th
Basketball Average: 60.2
Now this data provides more accurate support for the argument that Clemson’s ACC SOS was tougher in football than in basketball over the past 5 years.

Right. SOS is based on who you play. If youre good enough to make the

playoffs, then you play better teams. Still part of SOS. Maybe if the BB team made it to the playoffs more often, then their SOS would reflect that.

Re: LOL. So ACC football has a stronger SOS than football?

I'm aware the conclusion is the same. My reason in posting was since you used statement that "the data is the data" in a post above, I wanted to provide you with more accurate data regarding the argument you were making regardless of whether the conclusion was the same or not so you were not reaching a biased conclusion given the original data.
One could still argue that even in-conference SOS rankings are a little skewed between football and basketball since football does not play all the teams in the conference like basketball does. However, this effect would likely wash out when examining the comparison over multiple seasons as you have done.

The football and basketball teams play a majority of their games against league opponents. So citing the overall SOS pretty much covers the conference strength, just like you you concluded. That’s cool you dove even deeper to prove that point. Thank you.

Football is currently tougher than basketball. If you do not realize how far basketball has fallen then you do have some sort of agenda. The OP just stated facts, and some want to make BS excuses. Both are bad and that I believe we all can agree, but this basketball deal has 2 ranked teams in a league that not too long ago was the premier conference in the nation. It has become sad and embarrassing. I love Clemson everything but where we are in basketball and football for that matter has more to do with how bad the conference is. If we finish 2 with a win over a Kentucky and a Duke do you think we will end up higher than a 5 seed? I would be shocked. Finish 2nd 10 years ago and you were probably thinking a 1 or 2 seed.

Very well said rhpltmeg®. The ACC used to be the gold standard in basketball. It is now a shell of its former self. Adding FSU years ago gave ACC football a nice bump but they have become a laughing stock recently. Unfortunately, you play who you have to play. Glad both our football and basketball teams have been making the best of it.

I don’t think most people realize there’s not a power 4 in basketball. There’s contenders in every conference, so simply being in a “major” conference doesn’t boost your schedule in basketball.

How could playing in the SEC this season not improve SOS when you are playing a ranked team in 1/2 or more of your games? Unless we win the ACC championship, watch where we will get seeded. Conference competition matters. That’s why your mids need to play some tough OOC games and win if there is the possibility you will not win your conference and get an automatic bid.
