Why did refs put ball on 2 yard line after our PI at end of game

Our man (#14) either held or committed pass interference with about 2 minutes left in the game. Whatever penalty he committed he did so near the 5 yard line. The line of scrimmage was about the 15 yard line. Why did refs put ball on the 2? It would be placed on the 2 only in there was PI in the end zone which was not the case.

It appeared Dabo asked the same question to the official after the ball was spotted. Dabo laughed and shook his head at whatever answer he received. I guess the official told him the ball was thrown through the end zone, so they placed it at the 2 because they weren't allowed to award a free TD.

We'll never know because it made no sense. No facemask call, no targeting call, phantom PI call in 4th quarter that gave GT another score, I could go on and on. Worst ACC crew I've seen in a long while.

My guess is, because it was near the five,the penalty
was half the distance of the goal.I'm just guessing
but what you are saying it probably should have 15
yard penalty which would still have placed it near
the goal.

It is a spot foul or 15 yards, whichever is least. It is spotted at the 2 if the interference is in the endzone.

Nope, that is the pros that place it at the two if it occurs in the endzone and in this case the contact occurred at or about the 10.

I wondered the same thing so I looked it up yesterday. The rule states that any defensive PI which occurs with the line of scrimmage between the 2 yard line and the 17 yard line by rule is placed at the 2 yard line. If the PI occurs inside the 2 yard line then it is half the distance to the goal. Unfortunately, the LOS was the 16. It it had been the 18 then it would have been a spot foul at about the 10 since that is where the contact occurred. In my opinion, for what it is worth, it should have be holding at the most which would have been half the distance to the goal and the penalty should have been assessed to the 8 yard line.

That makes absolutely no sense. Interference at the 9 puts the ball at the 2 but interference inside the two would give you half the distance (ball at the 7 if LOS is 15)??? Did you mean if the LOS is inside the 2? That’s some wicked lawyering rules writing if that’s correct.

If the LOS is between the 2 and the 17 no matter where the PI occurs (at the 16, at the 5, in the EZ) the ball is placed at the 2 yard line. If the LOS is inside the 2 or at the 2 the ball is place half the distance. In either case it is an automatic first down. The LOS in this case was the 16 and the contact occurred around the 10. By rule the ball was placed at the 2. To my limited knowledge this is the only penalty that is not half the distance to the goal.
