NCAA Transfer Portal - Why Dabo is careful

MCAA rules require that anyone you bring in via the portal is guaranteed to remain on scholarship for the remainder of their eligibility. So, if they don’t fit or don’t pan out you are STUCK with them……..

portal on their teams. USC (I think over 18 players), Bama (Gibbs comes to mind immediately), obviously Tennessee with Hooker, and Washington with their QB without searching online.

Maybe he has finally figured it out. Would you have taken him out of the portal when coots did if he would have wanted to sign with Clemson? That probably wouldn't have impressed Cade Klubnik. Our TE's are fine. WR... meh

Why would we take Rattler? We have 3 5-star QB recruits on the team. But lack of WR and DB talent and/or depth and the OL could have been addressed.

and only USC may make the playoff. The portal is probably a help to new coach who hasn't had time to recruit. (USC) But you don't know how that is going to effect "culture" in long term. Our players rarely get in trouble / cause scandal and are class acts. I'd rather be 10th, than have trash culture.

Bama's best linebacker, Henry To'To (sp?)
Transferred from Tennessee.
There are plenty of other examples.

UGA does not need transfers until they need them. Then per Jim Donnan at Savannah QB Club last night, they target who they need and 9 out of 10 times UGA gets them.

When people transfer out via the portal we have a tendency to give their scholarship to a walk on. I would be willing to bet most of the guys we actually offered out of the portal would be better than a walk on

Some of these portal puppies might have wanted more than we had to offer.
Sure, we can offer an opportunity to compete for a starting position, but now NIL also enters the picture as a desired component of a transfer decision. We are just now getting set up to deliver NIL opportunities.
Also, given the rules about not using NIL as an enticement (only a reward once in place on a team), perhaps we haven't yet figured out an honorable path around that rule - which would appear to require considerable cooperation between the athletic department and the NIL cooperatives without the appearance of pay-for-signing or pay-for-play.

Our issues are due to poor player development and poor game planning.
We continue to recruit top 5-10 classes. Talent is not our problem. We are able to get elite talent.

I'm not blaming NIL for our success. I'm saying that our NIL competence may be an impediment to our use of the portal (if necessary).

From the first time I heard about the portal I didn’t like it and still do not but it’s here and isn’t going anywhere. I do see the benefits of filling certain needs. It looks like the tigers have some holes next year especially defensive end Looks like the talent coming in could be special but would most likely take a beating next season

player. You were stuck with them whether they panned out or not. And, it is one of the major reasons Clemson doesn't use the portal, Dabo doesn't run guys off, even if they are busts. They may move on, but I have not heard anyone say Dabo ran them off.

Dabo is just a gaslighting con man stuck in the past. If a transfer doesn't pan out, then Dabo won't play them. And then they'll jump back in the portal. That's why the portal is such a great resource. Clemson is getting run over by teams that embrace the new era, and it will only get much worse. Dabo only knows BS and gaslighting, he's a marketing con man. Are the fans tired of the silly drama? Are the players growing tired of it all too?

4 of our last 5 out of conference losses have been to transfer QBs.
Just sayin'.
We would have taken a center last spring but 2 we were interested in went elsewhere. I think you have to be careful with the portal as you don't have as much opportunity to know the player with the short time frame to select and enroll a player.
I don't think it is a magical fix to every problem but again it could help with some.
