Who here is a gun

Aug 31, 2021, 4:44 PM

--- EXPERT?

Here is one I am a certified expert with:

Maybe it is one reason my hearing is shot as in the day no one used ear protection.

1,006 were built.
Effective range was 18,373 yards or 10 miles.

My unit only had the W79 Artillery-Fired Atomic Projectile for this great gun, so being maybe just ten miles off was problematic as to surviving firing it.

When I got to Clemson I was given a M-1 rifle. All were required in ROTC for two years.
We went to class taught by soldiers and had drill on Wednesday.
This was mandatory.

i remember drill on thursdays '64 to '68.spent 1st semester in Army, then transferred to AF,because the fly boys didn't have to tote an m-1.recently got to fire one at my gun club.quite a kick.worked my way up to guidon bearer during my last semester.capt. biggs barely passed me for that last course.said i didn't have the right attitude.irony is that i enlisted in the army in '72 after grad school.turned out to be a good choice.stayed stateside for 3 yrs. at ft. jackson,a hardship tour for obvious reasons.

People that generally call themselves experts aren't actually experts, because they're usually unaware of what they don't know.

I'm a gun nut, and shoot a LOT. But expert I am not. Thank you guys for your service BTW, I bet those were a blast (no pun intended) to fire. (Assuming a peaceful situation)

Dahamp2003 did not mean to imply myself as an expert or claim I know more than others. I was just having some fun remembering ~~. Where is the harm?

I am not a "gun nut" or a gun expert.

I have taught many gun classes. I know the basics.
For 30 years had to show on an FBI certified range and qualify 4 times a year with a hand gun. (2 day and 2 night).

Pop taught me with a rifle, and I am very good. I am much less so with a pistol, but you probably don't want me shooting at you.

You posted -- (Assuming a peaceful situation) -- guess you are the expert there if it is not? Expand on that.

The W79 is an 8" howitzer and I never say one shoot. However there were some 8" guns next to my compound in DaNang and boy was it fun watching those babies fire. It was pretty easy to watch the projectile fly through the air ..... at least for a split second.

I was in the Army when the M1A1 came on line. We were among the first units to get them because we were guarding the border between West Germany & East Germany. Before the M1, we had M60A3’s. The M1 was a far, far, far superior tank. Better armor, much, much faster and a superior sighting system. The M1 could actually hit a target while moving, the M60 you’d never even attempt that. Anything within 2000 meters of an M1 would be toast, even with the sorriest gunner in the troop. I think I recall it could reach out beyond 3000 meters. In my day those tanks had 105mm rifled bores. They later transitioned to 120mm smooth bores. Nothing wants to be on the angry end of an M1.

Aug 31, 2021, 7:07 PM

In the Navy, I fired the Colt .45, M1, M14, M16, M60, and an old 12 gauge shotgun. The M1, and .45 in boot camp. I know I'm not a dead eye by any stretch, but I always considered myself capable. I don't remember how far the target was, but it wasn't really that far as I recall. We fired one blank and seven live rounds, again if my memory is correct, and there's a real possibility it isn't. Four shots were in the bullseye, three were outside of it, one well off. With the .45 four shots were on the target, well away from the bullseye, two shots, I have know idea where they went. Now I knew I wasn't good with a hand gun because I'd only shot one once, but I figured I'd at least hit the target. I asked an old Gunners Mate why I could have missed so badly, and he said some of the older weapons had been around since WWII. He said that if I had looked down the barrel of the .45, the rifling was probably worn smooth. It made me feel a little better, but I'm still not a good shot. I liked shooting them. Shooting the 60 was fun, but I really loved the M1, so much so that when I got some spare change, I bought one. It is the prize of my collection. I'd buy a 60, but the government frowns on private ownership of such weapons.

Talking about the russians verses Americans in Europe; The russians had a gazillion tanks, and outnumbered us badly, but I read a article that said Three M60 tanks, (which I guess was our mainstay at the time), with well trained crews, could knock out fifteen soviet tanks before the were finally overwhelmed. Thinking this was good ol' US of A propaganda, I asked one of my old buddies that served in Tanks when he was in the Army, if that were true, he kinda thought for a minute and said, yeah, that sounds right.

I guess we don't have the biggest military anymore, but we still have the best, at least if we can keep the politicians out of it.

Aug 31, 2021, 8:45 PM [ in reply to Re: Who here is a gun ]

I qualified with the M- 14 and since I was an officer I had to qualify with the 1911A 45. I qualified “expert” in both, but we had guys that could not even hit the silhouette of a man with the .45, much less the black scoring circle in the middle of the chest. However, when the instructors turned the silhouette around where the shooter could not see the black scoring circle, they hit the target every time …….. strange.

As an ex-service member you are eligible to buy weapons through the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program). Right now they are selling excess 1911s and according to my number that was drawn, I should be getting a call in November telling me which grades are available. They are selling them for about half the going price, but you have to send in paperwork and get into the lottery drawing when they open it up again ……. probably after the first of the year.

I don't really know. It was a short barrel model. Probably what was called a trench gun, or a riot gun. We broke the weapons out once each cruise, to waste ammo, and maybe break the monotony. I always thought Remington, but now that you mention it, it may very well have been a Winchester.

The 155 was my favorite. In Vietnam, an Army firing battery (I think about 4 guns, maybe a few more) were adjacent to my platoon compound. When they would turn their barrels over my compound everything on my shelves in my hootch would rattle off onto the floor. My hearing is not great, thanks partially to them, but mostly due to a land mine that went off about 40’ from where I was sitting on the running board of my truck.

During AF basic training in Sep - Oct 67, fired the M16 just once. Shot 59/60. After a year or so in Berlin, we were required to shoot it again and made 60/60. Basic trainees weren't allowed to fire in auto mode. Just those personnel shipping out to SE Asia. Several in the basic group had never held a weapon and a couple were nervous to do so. Seeing that, was relieved the M16s weren't going to be used in auto mode.

He immediately dropped the magazine and put the barrel in the palm of his hand (as if to check it) and pulled the trigger yet a second time, putting a round right through his hand. It was an ugly sight. It may be fake, but it looked real to me. Nothing makes me more nervous than being around people with weapons that I don't know.

given the award to wear on uniform but somehow discharge DD214 still does not show it- even after 2 revisions. Had to qualify with M-16 in AIT shooting on Automatic with a rifle that we hadn’t even held before much less practiced with so only got Marksman medal. In Basic , we shot the same rifle at the range for weeks before qualifying and we were responsible for cleaning it after each trip. The M-16s in AIT were just handed to us off a rack and weren’t maintained well and tended to jam while qualifying.

Would've been great to shoot even a couple of times before qualifing. We had a dry fire practice once prior. The AF was apparently strict in maintaining the weapons used. While on casual status after basic waiting for transfer to tech school, was assigned to the armory for a day. Saw how completely they were cleaned after shooting was completed. Pleased I didn't have to deal with it in Berlin.

Was not in the military, but my dad earned his sharpshooter medal in the army. He taught me to shoot every form of firearm you can think of: low and high caliber pistols, assault rifles, shotguns etc. One memory I had as we would put shotgun shells on a board and shoot the primer from 50 yards away with a .30 caliber carbine and 4x1 scope. Sounds impossible but we did it, is also highly dangerous
