my home and car insurance are up for renewal next month and they both went up pretty substantially for no good reason (meaning no wrecks, tickets, claims, etc). No changes at all in my living situation.
I knew my home ins would be going up because home value has skyrocketed, Helene catastrophe, etc. so was prepared for that hit (went up $300). I'm a fair man, replacement value has almost doubled the past few years, and it was reflected in the policy, so OK. But was NOT expecting auto to bump up that much also with same car, which is obviously NOT increasing in value.
Went to my local agent this morning (dad taught me to always deal with a local ins. agent, they can do tricks you can't do yourself) to see what they could do. They agreed that Helene + wildfires have had an insane effect on rate changes this year.
They did a deep lookaround and found me a new auto policy that instead of going UP $300, went DOWN $400. With better coverage. Instead of $1225, it's $510/yr. Crazy.
Kept home policy because agent said the assessors have gone nuts now when you change policies, they do intense home visits and assess unfair conditions before they will agree to insure (like make you clear trees and other "hazards" on your property). And the "package" deal discount (home+auto) is more a a ruse than anything, they don't both have to be same company.
Feeling like I conquered the world right now.
So don't just "pay the man", take some time to investigate this. Made a huge difference for me.

Cut my auto and home by over $2K by switching. I'd been with the last one for 10 years and had threatened to leave them multiple times.

I have Traveler's for both and they have been fantastic. I had to do a roof claim before Helene and they came out, flew a drone around, agreed to replace the entire roof and also gave me new gutters (I didn't even ask for it). No questions asked other than how old the roof was and no hassle whatsoever.

Auto from State Farm (30+ years of continuous policy) to Progressive and saved $4000/year. It was insane.
Of course my State Farm agent, who swore I had the best price I could possibly get at the time, just sent me a quote to switch back that was within $150 of progressive.

Auto policy came up for renewal and went up by 25%.
I called State Farm and got the same coverage for 55% of my new rate with the existing provider. Absolute madness.
When I called LM to cancel, I kept my dignity up until the very end when I was compelled asked the rhetorical question"is everyone in this industry phukking their customers or is this a y'all thing" I didn't make her answer it, just wished her a good day and moved on.
I bundled homes with State Farm too and got better coverage at a cheaper premium.
All in all, about 30 mins on the phone will save me a couple thousand on the year.

Exactly. The company that gave you the best deal 5+ years ago likely

isn't the one that will give you the best deal now.
They make $$ on those bad assumptions that "they were lowest in 2018, they are probably still the lowest I'll get because I'm loyal", or complacent customer that just isn't motivated to go through the inconvenience of changing.
With the craziness out there now, it's in everybody's best interest to look around.
