So how tough will it be to make the playoffs with NINE conf.

Jul 5, 2012, 3:41 PM

games,USC, a game like UGA and a instate opponent and winning a conference championship game? I wish the ACC would go back to 8 conference games. In the mean time we are watching our conference breathern like VT play 9 conference games and three cupcakes. Just think adding USC and another SEC opponent on to our schedule every season will be suicide when the playoff starts.

or it'll make sure our SOS gives us a chance at the playoffs***

Yeah we win the ACC,beat USC and miss the playoff because of

Jul 5, 2012, 3:54 PM

a loss to a team like Georgia that we added on as an extra big time opponent. GT,CU and FSU really need to push the ACC on this 9 conference game issue because we are the only three schools with a built in instate big time opponent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The others have big time instate opponents...

Jul 5, 2012, 3:56 PM

ours is average

LOL. You must have missed the last three games against them.***

If you draw Duke and Wake....

Jul 5, 2012, 3:58 PM

and then schedule a bunch of cupcake OOC oppoents, it won't be that bad.

On the other hand, if you draw Miami and Virginia Tech and also play a Georgia or Oklahoma State in addition to the FSU, Georgia Tech and the Pee #####, it's going to be a tougher row to hoe which is why you will likely see Clemson (among others) stop scheduling anything but cupcake OOC opponents and games against teams like Georgia, Texas A&M, TCU, and Aubuirn will likely become a thing of the past.

It won't matter or be a probem for the North Carolina and Virginia schools because their revials are also conference opponents.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

True, When scheduling OOC opponents in the future you will .

Jul 5, 2012, 4:02 PM

have to be sensitive to what ACC teams you are playing in the same year.

Re: If you draw Duke and Wake....

Jul 5, 2012, 6:10 PM [ in reply to If you draw Duke and Wake.... ]

Those teams will not want to schedule us, either, as they need wins to reach their goals, too. You will see many changes, IMO, because of the new alignments.

When will people realize

Jul 5, 2012, 4:00 PM

When we go to 9 conf games we won't be scheduling 2 big ooc opprnents a year (yes I count USuC, even in years they suck they're still from the almighty SEC). TDP has already stated that for budgeting purposes the football program wants 7 home games a year. This will not be possible with two home-and-away opponents on the schedule and no major program would schedule just an away game.

On years we have 4 home conference games we'd need the three ooc games at home to equal 7, but on years we have 5 conference home games that would make USuC and the other major ooc opponent away leaving us only 6 home games. That is a huge cut in revenue that TDP thinks is not worth the national exposure. The only exception will be out series with thUGA since there was enough fan outcry when they talked about potentially canceling it.

A diminished ACC perception can be overcome by Clemson, FSU, and GT with the current rivals if we schedule a second legit opponent. Taking that option away kills that and hinders these teams' ability to improve the ACC's perception.

Oh yeah almost forgot, fired Swofford!

When will people realize...that things go in cycles.

Jul 5, 2012, 4:04 PM

Just a few years ago the Pac10 had the same reputation as ACC in 90s w/ FSU/USC (real one) riding through the league. The Big10 was a joke outside of Ohio St...even the SEC in the 90s had UF and the 11 dwarves, and FSU was beating UF most years.

The ACC has sucked hind teet recently in the BCS and for own sake that needs to improve, the SEC has had an amazing run....but even the mighty Gators (winners of 2 of last 6 NCs) are picked right there w/ Vanderbilt.

Remember Bama pre Saben? Remember DiNardo at LSU? LOL, wasn't that long ago.

Things change.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

Cyclical or not, if we stick with a quality OOC game in

Jul 5, 2012, 4:18 PM

addition to USuC, instead of scheduling a cupcake, we're going to only have 6 home games every other year with the way the expanded ACC is currently arranged. That's a significant financial blow and it robs the donors who pony up big bucks for a Clemson home football schedule. If we drop the quality OOC, that's a significant blow to a team's legitimacy.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, things are cyclical, but the game has changed since

Jul 5, 2012, 4:47 PM [ in reply to When will people realize...that things go in cycles. ]

those years. Money is the ultimate game changer, and the rich are getting richer. With the way the SEC is raking it in after a hot streak it is making it difficult for other conferences to compete.

On the other side of the coin however, Texas basically prints money and has been down the last couple years (when I say down, I mean according to their standards).

In the end, I think that the SEC will be tough to overtake if they continue making that much more money than the ACC.

You forgot to mention the coots were a favorite of many teams to add an automatic win. Only recently have they been anything but a pretty easy out.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The 9 game conference schedule is here for at least

Jul 5, 2012, 4:05 PM

5 years until the "look in" clause of the ESPN contract comes up. ESPN paid/wanted 9 conference games to give them more ACC games a year to broadcast.

Re: When will people realize...that things go in cycles.

Jul 5, 2012, 4:09 PM

I don't disagree with any of that. I just don't like how the conference has tied our hands with this 9 conference game schedule. ACC up or down, I would like to see Clemson play more than just USuC and two cupcakes a year. Again it's not completely about strength of schedule for me, I was looking forward to games against ole miss and osu. Oh well

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: When will people realize...that things go in cycles.

Jul 5, 2012, 4:11 PM

4 of the ACC games a year are cupcake enough

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The good OOC games will be missed thats why I wish they

Jul 5, 2012, 4:12 PM

had added a week or round (8 teams) to the playoffs and dropped the 12th regular season game.(back to 11 regular season games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Re: When will people realize...that things go in cycles.

Jul 5, 2012, 4:15 PM

They may be cupcake enough but we're not scheduling for strength of schedule, we're scheduling for money generated from ticket revenue at home events. But I agree with you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The money generated from a quality OOC home game

Jul 5, 2012, 4:27 PM

versus an in-state FCS or cupcake is substantially more. Sellouts at top price instead of 10,000 no shows and tickets being distributed for free at Bi-Lo with a grocery purchase. It's a bad deal for the better programs the way it's arranged.

Is there any incentive for those programs that aren't competitive in football to invest heavily and improve? I don't see it. And the programs that do invest are now hampered financially even more than before with the extra away conference game.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

SEC will eventually go to 9 conference games,

Jul 5, 2012, 6:54 PM

sooner than later. Ole Miss is talking about softening its O-O-C games because of this probability. There will rarely be good inter-conference matchups in the future outside of in-state rivalry games. Get used to it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our future OOC schedule will include USuC, an instate FCS

Jul 5, 2012, 7:18 PM

school, and a lesser FBS school from the MAC or equivalent. Probably no more quality OOC games after the Georgia series. Very difficult to schedule 7 home games otherwise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's exactly where it's headed by necessity.

Jul 5, 2012, 8:03 PM

It's a shame that a place like Death Valley stands to sit idle for an extra Saturday in the next few years to accommodate Georgia on the schedule. I wouldn't trade that game for anything, but it is a steep price we're paying to keep it.
