Offseason Coaching Changes

Nov 8, 2022, 4:51 PM

I can definitely see Tyler Grisham being gone after this year, but are Streeter & Spiller safe?
Streeter, in his first year as OC, has had a chance to prove he can lead an elite offense and it just ain't happened.
As for Spiller, this is definitely Germans, but I haven't seen our RBs evolve and develop under his tutelage. Shipley still whiffing on blocking assignments is evidence of that.

We've trusted Dabo this far. Let's trust he'll get things fixed in the offseason by making the changes necessary to get us back to an elite level!

What was elite about the offense Streeter inherited?***

Touche. I guess I should've said "install an elite offense." Either way, dude is in way over his head & needs to be on the chopping block along with Grisham & Spiller.

Perhaps we should judge him on his body of work developing QBs. It’s flatline for me.

Nothing. Our generational offense players are gone. I do believe our scheme has become stale. It seems they don’t trust DJ to do much until we get behind.

What has Streeter done to mask weaknesses??

Like a good OC would do?

I don't foresee Rank making any changes to this staff, not unless someone leaves for another job.

My thoughts (Which have no bearing on actual hiring/firings) are as follows:

-Grisham: WRs have regressed overall. They no longer block, create separation, or show any desire to fight for contested balls. Though we are somewhat limited in physical attributes this year, 2/3 listed above can be taught. I believe the Grisham experiment has run its course and thank him for his time, but someone else needs to opportunity to evaluate, coach, and rebuild the WR corp at Clemson.

-Spiller: The jury was out on Spiller for me until late last year. I believe that he has done a pretty good job overall with the running backs. He has helped Shipley elevate his game (sans pass protection) and learn to navigate/take advantage of the space he is given by the OL. Pass protection is often something that running backs have to heavily work on (even the Great Travis Etienne struggled at times). He also has helped Mafah and Pace (prior to injury) improve their output. The running back corp is one of the strongest units of the Clemson offense this year. I see no reason to fire him.

Streeter: Former QB coach promoted to OC. Unless I am mistaken, he is still in charge of the QBs as well. I believe that his time to move on should have come prior to last years promotion. QB talent under Streeter has not progressed, but regressed under his tutelage. It also appears that whether he is hampered by qb play (once again falls on his coaching), available personnel (unable to formulate scheme to fit talent), a lack of identity, or a combination of the factors. I do not believe he has what it takes to be an OC at this level. There is a reason he was calling plays at Richmond before he joined the Clemson staff.

Other off-season changes that I would like to see are:
1. Hiring of Jeff Scott as recruiting coordinator/WR coach/ assistant HC (make up whatever position necessary). His ability to recruit is worth its weight in gold.
2.) An addition of true LB coach. I believe Wes is going to be a great DC, but some extra fire/firepower is needed to rally the troops. Schematically, I have very few issues with him up until this point. I just believe having additional help to relay the schemes to the players would be beneficial.
3.) Bring in a new OC and QB coach. Thank Streeter for his time, but move on. Though, I believe there is a rift between CCU OC Willie Korn and Clemson, I believe a significant sum of money could convince him to share his young, efficient, and exciting offensive philosophy with us. I do not look forward to seeing the same stale offense for the entirety of next season.

My concern with Spiller is what was initially viewed as his greatest attribute. Recruiting the position.

Anyone willing to shed light on the possible "rift" that is being referenced here? Or we just speculating based on the college days of Korn going out with a shoulder injury and losing the job?

@gglennjamin182® the rift that I am referring to comes from not only the Korn shoulder injury, but the resulting mistreatment/mis-diagnosis by Clemson medical staff. Due to some negligence on their behalf, I believe Korn feels like they effectively ended his playing career in big boy D1 athletics. I have heard multiple reports of Korn being "bitter" of his treatment at Clemson, and have heard rumors his father feels the same way. However, money can heal many wounds. Though its as likely to happen as me winning the lottery, I would love to see him a part of the Clemson coaching staff.

Nice post bigwilly. This is big boy football. Love Streeter like most people but it's time to move in a different direction. There's no on the job training at this level.

Shipley knows who to block in pass pro most times he tries to block the right guy, he just gets plowed over. S&C is and has been an issue at Clemson for 20 years. This is another example of when it comes to needing to be more physical and stronger than the other guy Clemson is not up to snuff.

My only other slight qualm is Joey Batson, though they brought in new support staff for him...he still has the old mindset regarding strength training.

We also seem to forget that Streeter had a dress rehearsal in the National Championship game against LSU (Tony Elliott had COVID) and we know how that turned out. Dabo promoted him despite that rehearsal.

Re: Offseason Coaching Changes

I think this is still highly overlooked by Clemson fans. We should've won that game. Won that National Championship.

Everyone "ooh's & ahh's" over LSU's Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson, and Clyde Edwards Elarie, but our guys were ELITE too. Trevor Lawrence, Justyn Ross, Tee Higgins, Travis Etienne, and even Amari Rodgers to some degree.

Man if Nolan Turner had just caught that interception that hit him in the hands to start the 3rd quarter....

The LSU game was over the moment they screwed Clemson and ejected Skalski for a bs targeting.

I believe the a big reason Streeter got the job was to keep Klubnik on board. Jmo.

one name we should be looking at. Wayne Gallman. He just got signed to the Chiefs practice squad, but his NFL career is winding down. He was definitely the best blocking back we have had in recent times. Can he teach it to others? Bring him on as whatever kind of assistant you want to name, and let's find out.

Re: Offseason Coaching Changes

Nov 9, 2022, 9:11 AM

The answer IMO is to make wholesale changes that should have happened last year. No need to explain the offense. But the defense has been a shock to the system for me. The DL was supposed to be and has been great with these players in the past. The ND game and the way they were abused is unacceptable. The linebackers have experience and talent, they haven’t been as good as you would think. The secondary as hurt the team so much since the wake game. I just can’t believe this defense has been so inconsistent and bad at times. It’s time for a change that should have happened after last season. But it won’t happen.
