What UNC opting out of NIT means to me…

That team, that program has high expectations. They failed to meet those expectations and are now imposing consequences on themselves for that failure.
In other words in their opinion, they didn’t do well enough over the course of the season to deserve playing in the NIT or the NCAA.
I kinda like that method. Excellence is rewarded and mediocrity has consequences. Hold yourself to a standard and self impose consequences if you don’t achieve that standard.

They were the preseason #1 and played in the national title game last year.

Yeah the NIT would be an embarrassment.

They aren't imposing consequences on themselves. They are taking their basketball and going home and also trying to send a message to the selection committee that you don't mess with basketball royalty without their being payback.
It is nothing but an immature stunt on their part...

The NIT only has value in building for next year or rewarding players who want to keep playing.
If they players and coaches don't see any value in it, why play?
I don't know if it has any value for us but it depends on who would be coming back.
For UNC, it obviously doesn't have any value.

Well, they have played in 6 previous NITs and as far as I know, have never turned one down. It just seems a little suspect that in a matter of minutes of finding out they weren't going to the Big Dance they backed out of the NIT with the excuse that they wanted to use that time to prepare for next season.
Maybe for a program like theirs, it doesn't offer any value but they must have thought all the other times it did. For a program like ours, it gives our young guys some good post-season experience and a chance to maybe play with a bit of a chip on their shoulders to show they deserved better than they got. I'm all for letting the players decide and I think our guys have a lot of incentive to want to play.

BTW, you can keep giving me TDs if you want but you won't be getting any in return. If I disagree with someone I just come out and say what I think so we can have an honest exchange of ideas. I would appreciate the same courtesy.

I'm sure UNC doesn't care but they are taking a beating on social media. I think Draft Kings might have said it best,
"We already know North Carolina has turned down a chance at the NIT. Given how badly their season went compared to expectations, it’s not a surprise."

Hold on. They opted out because losing in the NIT would be too injurious to their precious hauty-tauty image and they cannot take that chance. Clemson should be eager to accept and go in to win. We have little to lose and a lot to gain. GO FOR IT! MAN UP BROWNELL- you might even save your job!

The NIT became a joke in 1985...

when the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams. After that, there were no leftover teams worth a dime.
One of the best and most memorable NIT championship games was IU vs. Purdue in 1979. It was a spirited game of two rivals, both who had very good teams. Purdue went to the NCAA Final Four the next year and IU won the NCAA championship the year after. Those were the days.
Off topic: I rarely watch women's BB because the depth of talent and teams is so pathetic. Even now, there are still way too many blowout games. They took the equality movement too far when they expended to 64 teams in the 90s. They really should only have 16 or 32 teams even today. The depth of talent is improving but it has a very long way to go.
