What is “Best is Standard”

To me and any coach that means getting your team to strive for the best in the classroom, field and in life. Sometimes best may only be winning 8 games or it could be going undefeated depending on caliber of that years team. Getting passing grades might be some kids best and the other kid maybe straight A’s. Unless you know what Dabo’s best is standard is in his mind you may never be happy being a fan.

Best is the best you can be. In life. In the classroom. In relationships with other people. It is more than just football. It is not perfection.
Every practice, every day. Every game, every play.
Be the best you are capable of being.

I tried to apply it to dating but gave up due to frustration after a few weeks.

Everybody judge you on wins and losses…both with integrity. Which is what Clemson does, otherwise don’t play the game.

Winning is not enough.

Being better than your opponent is not the standard Dabo has set. If you win your game but did not put forth your best effort, then you did not meet the standard.
If you made a 92 on a test, but were capable of making a 98, then you did not meet the standard.

That makes a lot of sense. I’m capable of pulling a 6 (5 if I’m being honest) but I walked into the bars with the “best is the standard” philosophy and walked up to the hottest girl in the bar. The bars I go to aren’t exactly “hip” so the hottest girl is probably a 7 in favorable light and cold weather clothing.
My approach led to a lot of socially awkward moments where I’d say “sup” and the 7 would just stare at me without responding until I walked away.
This did nothing for my self esteem and reminded me that Dabo and the players fortunate enough to suit up for the Clemson Tigers are just different than the rest of us.
I’m going to leave the “best is standard” to them and stay in my own lane from here on out.

But some of our fans like to use it as a way to mock him... For whatever loser fan reason... When we dont win it all.

That is a reasonable expectation at this point.

Agree. The last 2 years of the failed DJ experiment have been very frustrating to fans. Couple with Dabo’s stubborn public support of a recruiting mistake turned off some fans. And now he is ridiculing the fans who supported his best is the standard mantra. Hopefully the oc and qb changes will turn the tide of those who have expressed their honest disappointment.
