SCHSL passed a 3x multiplier for charter/magnet/private schools

2

Nov 15, 2023, 3:05 PM

meaning if you have a kid in the school who lives in a zone for a different school, that student counts as three students for classification. Not sure how this impacts school choice districts like Greenville

I think this might kill the Southside Christian football team and maybe some other ones. Most of the charters/privates will move up probably one classification and in some cases, two.

high schools.

So you have have a football team playing in 3A, a Basketball team playing in 1A and a Baseball team playing in 2A.

What I was told is it has to apply equally to public.

1

Nov 15, 2023, 3:10 PM

The new admin is forcing all schools to go to $0 out of district tuition (not vouchers but pretty much the same thing). So now we are looking at having to cut on the football team. Not because of numbers, but if we have 5 out of district players and that extra 15 puts us in 3A we will be screwed.

And there's a LOT in the Columbia metro area that do all of that for all sports too.

It's almost like they are trying to catch what you are doing, using out of district players, and apply a penalty...

It's not fair that a school of the same size using local players has to compete in the same classification as schools that are taking out of area players.

They were keeping their numbers low while recruiting athletes (and giving them cake online classes) so they could curbstomp 2A rural schools and claim championships.

I don't think the SCHSL can force any team to schedule a charter/private for out of region play. But yes, the entire region for Gray forfeited all their games against them this year

HSL can't do jack #### about out of region play. Region play if you forfeit you will pay a hefty fine.

This is what happened with Legion Academy. No region would vote to let them in and no team would play them for non-conference. They had to start playing in some ######## region in NC and finally just folded.

That needs to be reported to the SDE & College Board

2

Nov 15, 2023, 3:25 PM

According to the Defined Minimum Program, schools cannot award AP weighted GPA credits unless the student is enrolled in a course with the specified AP course code and takes the AP exam.

I dealt with this all the time when I was a registrar & testing coordinator. But it was mostly dealing with credits for out of state transfers.

Fine, just play up where you can get some competition. I will never understand why these schools want to play 1A or 2A and beat the crap out of every team they play. This is not just a football thing. Check our soccer, tennis, golf, etc. They pummel opponents. For what gain?

2025 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not exactly the school's choice

1

Nov 16, 2023, 9:25 AM

They play within the guidelines that were set forth. And speaking as a parent of one of these schools, the education is far superior than any public school around here, and I'm in one of the best districts in the state.

"Recruiting" is also a pretty dumb argument.. Still have to get to school every day, so I'd say that limits the area pretty well.

Man alive you must not be around some of "those" parents and kids

1

Nov 16, 2023, 9:32 AM

that exist.

I know one. Kid has some talent and may or may not get a chance to play in college. Most likely scenario is he walks on at a lower level D1 for his sport.

Left his high school after his jr year. Parents bought a house about 40+ minutes away. An "investment" property, if you will. The now sr lives there solo JUST SO HE CAN ATTEND xxxxx HS, which has a much stronger and well connected program/coaching staff for his sport of choice and is a far higher profile school for said sport.

How did kid end up there? His distant cousin plays there and has been chipping away at him, then got him to come to the school for a "visit". You know, meet the players and visit with the coaching staff. He fills a position of need and was recruited by the entire program.

I'd imagine this type of stuff happens far more often than you would even think.

Shoot, MauldinT® knows kids that live in Charleston and play club soccer.....IN GREENVILLE. Just think about that. Twice per week they commute 200 miles, for PRACTICE.

You think they won't drive a half hour on the daily to go to the HS that recruits them the most?

Public, private, charter, schmarter. It's happening everywhere.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh I don't disagree I know it happens everywhere.

1

Nov 16, 2023, 9:46 AM

But the parents that I talk to on a regular basis all put education first. And it is nice on the sports side not to have to have been in some sort of clique/booster club since they were 10 for a chance to make the team. Not to mention there aren't fights, OD's, bomb threats, weapons etc. It's a better, safter, and all around superior HS experience.

1

Nov 15, 2023, 3:25 PM [ in reply to It levels the playing field with fake athletic schools like Oceanside ]

It's not just fake schools.

It's also charters and private schools that have a much better student population for a sport than their student population suggests.

I think making them play up is fair.

A lot of small schools have dropped out of district tuition

2

Nov 15, 2023, 3:46 PM

so that if a student is suppose to go to another district, as long as they can get to the other school district, they can attend (also based on numbers).

This means that if a school is 15 students from being in 2a (a meat grinder of a classification) and their 1a football team has 10 players on that team that are out of district, they will no longer be in 1a they will be in 2 a. But the basketball team that winter only has 2 out of district players, they will be playing in 1a but if the girls' basketball team has 4 players, they will be playing in 2a which will kill the small travel budget because girls and boys basketball usually travel together since they play in the same regions and classifications to save gas money. With this multiplier they won't anymore.

what will happen is a reversal of what is happening now. Instead of charters being selective with out of district students, you'll start seeing public schools being selective.

the pushback is there isn't enough of those schools fielding all the sports. Gray doesn't have lacrosse teams, so that means BE would be in a playoff with about 5 schools in the entire state for the championship. ALso I think the SCHSL requires a min of twelve teams in a playoff to sponsor a championship
