Miami and Clemson (it could be other teams) know they are playing in the ACC championship. It's
win and you are in the playoffs and if you get beat you are headed to the Mayo Bowl do you play your best players against your rivals. I think there will be teams that opt to sit players just like they do in the Nfl.

A player might decide to opt out themselves, but in no world does our coaching staff approach a player and ask them to sit. That is not in our DNA.

Probably not for two reasons

1. It's the 4 HIGHEST RANKED conference champs not the 4 P4 champs that get the 1st round byes. Most seasons it'll probably be the 4 P4 champs but not every year

2. The loser of the conference champs game will probably still be in contention for an at large bid and a chance to host a playoff game. That gives you incentive to win as many games as possible.

Great point!

Only if they are headed to the championship game but also out of the reasonably projected top 12. The game against South Carolina in 2011 (ranked 18th) before the ACC Championship game comes to mind. Beating South Carolina and losing to Va Tech would not have had us in the top 12. With only 4 conferences and Boise State ranked 7th that week we were not going to get a 4th round bye regardless. I think you take your starters and make it a bye week or play limited snaps.

That said, now that most conferences have gone away from divisions I don't think you will see a lot of teams fit that criteria of being so far out of the top 12 that you would still get the 12th seed even if you won both games.

Clemson's last two scheduled games are Citadel and USuC. Miami's last two are Wake and Syracuse. So Miami can't coast the last two games of the season since they are conference games, whereas Clemson can. If I am Coach Swinney and know I will be one of the two teams in the championship game, I am probably not playing some guys those last two games so they don't get hurt and/or get some rest. However, I doubt Coach Swinney would do what I would do. I think he is more honorable than me.
