Pray it won't be needed. We'll be using that stable of running backs if so. First time in awhile we don't have a "feel good" reliable backup at QB.

I really pray that DJ is protected from any bad injuries. Teams know we are thin and teams like NCState, UGA, FSU and that one DB at Syracuse are all notorious for taking cheap shots to gain an edge.

Everyone is going to bring the house against us. Between the line not being elite, questionable RB pass protection, and a massive drop off to whoever the backup ends up being.
I still feel it’s foolish to not have brought in depth through the portal. Brewer would have been awesome, but I get he wants a chance to start at Utah.

Some like you think the portal is like Amazon where you can read the reviews and pick the size style and brand you want which will arrive in two days. The reality is there are very few players who could help the teams with an elite roster. Any QB who could have helped us would not be willing to come in for one year to sit on the bench behind DJ who was not a head case. You want something from the portal which does not exist

I don’t know what the story is with these baseball guys, but even if one of them does show up, not picking up a backup QB in the off-season was bad roster management.
We have several options now, but that could change quickly, and no elite program should be this thin at QB. We absolutely could have put the feelers out and got an ex-3 star with a little game experience to be a serviceable #3.
If the worst case scenario was to happen and DJ goes down, I would rather not leave it solely to a untested walk-on who will get blitzed mercilessly. Or freshmen who are not close to being ready for prime time (or even a JP noon start).
Look at the teams in the top tier. Would they get this thin at QB? We have several options, but they aren’t good and there’s a good chance half of those options don’t really exist.

I think if the 2 baseball players don't stay, then Helms will look good enough during mop up duty to transfer to a top school for a chance to start in 2022!

Do you actually think one of the incoming QBs can beat out Helms? Not gonna happen. They may have a higher ceiling than HH but neither are ready this year.

Strange question. We don't have any. Would be nice. DJ is great. Hunter seems like a nice kid. There's no way he's winning a title, but he probably has the talent to lead the rest of Clemson's team against a bad ACC team if there was a one game stroke of misfortune (knock on wood).
This is probably the thinnest Clemson has been at QB since 2014 (I hope Hunter is better than Cole Stoudt, though I don't think there's an appreciable difference). If it makes anyone feel better, Nick Schuessler was the backup in 2015 and 2016, not exactly a world-beater, but those were two really good seasons.
But my hope is that Clemson will finally change the offense a bit. Gotta drop all the QB runs, because DJ going down is the worst case scenario for the season. My hope is that the offensive line will be improved to be elite rather than worse than average. Clemson will use the stable of talented running backs to move the ball (Clemson has to be top 5 in running the ball this year) and then use the talent of the wide receivers to spread the ball out like Sarkesian did last year. The lazy playcalling of the past couple years won't fly with that lack of depth. And please let use move to more of a vertical passing attack than HB counter, WR screen, WR screen/draw, punt.

If DJ goes down it will be rough like almost all other teams losing their rockstar QB. Phommachanh could be back by November, that would be seven months. He was highly ranked coming out of high school but frankly Helms looked better last year. I think we can still win with Helms at QB because our WR's will help and we will still have all our RBs. He can manage the game with the talent we have around him. Cole Stoudt was not a bad QB, remember he got banged up but played really well in he bowl game when DeShaun was hurt. Schuessler luckly didn't have to play but I think the little he did in mop up he held up. Would like to see Chandler play at Clemson. He has talent but I think Helms would still be next up due to experience in our system.

I mean, it means different things to different teams. Just last year, Lawrence went down and the offense really didn't hurt for it, because DJ was so good. I think Bryce Young would have done fine if Mac was hurt. It's getting more rare to have a backup who is starter material because of the transfer portal, but there's a really wide gap between DJ and Hunter. I mean, people thought Hunter looked great against GT's third strings, but I don't buy him looking better than Taisun, especially since we got a better look during the Spring game. Neither were great, but Taisun showed some real grit and determination at the end.
I think we can win a lot of games with anyone at QB. There's a huge talent gap between Clemson and the rest of the ACC. But I don't know that he could win against UNC or Boston College, though it of course depends on how the offensive line plays. Our running attack for 6 of the last 7 seasons has been top 5 in yards per rush. Last year it was #74.
Cole did do well against Oklahoma in 2014. But that was also the year of the GT game, which I'd say might be the most embarrassing loss since the West Virginia game. You can't really defend 19 yards in 11 passing attempts and 3 picks.

Without DJ we would be lucky to get through the season without more than two losses. The whole season would be shot.
I know that’s pessimistic, but feels like it would be the Cole Stoudt days all over (but more GT game vs OU)

Ditch the offensive system that won 2 and played for 2 other national championships? That makes no sense regardless of the QB depth. This coaching staff has earned the benefit of the doubt- they’re at practice everyday and know the players better than any fan- just sit back and enjoy the ride.

I'm not prepared to give the offensive system that credit. Each and every one of those teams had a top 5 defense and except for 2019, the best defensive line. In addition, Clemson had Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, two of the best QBs in the last 20 years, and a host of NFL wide receivers. In 2018, Clemson mostly ditched the offensive system against Alabama, and that was the best offensive performance in the Swinney era. The last two years, the offense has really struggled in the big games. You seem to be forgetting that Clemson is 1-3 in its last 4 big games.
You earn some leeway based on success, but you can't just stagnate and say good enough. That would be the mark of a bad coach. If Elliot's system no longer works, he should change it. I think it's obvious it's not as good as Brady's or Sarkesian's (Could you imagine what they would have done with Trevor, who's clearly more talented than Burrow or Jones?) And it's the same for Venables. He had the best defensive line in history playing for him. When you can bring 4 guys and it feel like 8, that gives you a ton of leeway for gameplanning. I hope the new guys can play that well, but if they can't he has to earn his salary by developing a new defense. It's not an insult to either him or Elliot, it's stating a fact that it's an evolving game, and you have to adapt or get left behind. Sad that you can't see that.

I agree with most of your comment, but a more vertical passing game will require DJ to hold the ball longer, which means he gets hit more often, especially on his follow through, which is when he is most exposed.
We will have 5-6 WRs with size advantages on the outside, while defenses are stacking the box. There's got to be some creative ways to make them pay.

Why was everybody so high on PHOMMACHANH? Hunter is a nice kid- Hunter maybe all right against weaker teams. Iam sure he sees this stuff. PHOMMACHANH played in four games last year- Hunter in three(i think). Hunter had more TD's than PHOMMACHANH.

I’m worried.
Bubba Chandler probably won’t be ready to contribute right away since he didn’t enroll in the spring. Will Taylor was recruited to eventually be moved to WR. And both of them could go pro in baseball.
Hunter Helms and Billy Wiles are walk-ons. However, I do believe Helms can play winning football for us as he continues to progress. From what I’ve seen in limited action, Helms doesn’t possess a great arm, but he’s pretty accurate. The game is moving too fast for him, but that’ll come with more practice.

If DJ misses more than the odd series with injury, we are
Jul 9, 2021, 3:25 PM
|
|
In trouble no matter who the back-up is.
We have a guy in Hunter Helms who is perfectly capable of coming in for a play or a series, or even and entire game against a lesser opponent.
If we have to go with a back-up past that, our hopes of a CFP title are gone anyway.
Remember, even with a 5-star back-up, we lost at Notre Dame.
It would not matter if we has Taisun, or Chase Brice, or Bubba Chandler or anyone else, we can only win it all by playing DJ to the max and hoping he is durable enough to hold up.
Our entire season is riding on DJ. It’s that simple. The back-up depth is fairly irrelevant.

Relax nervous-nellies. Everything the coaching staff have done or not done has had purpose. The vast majority of the time they have come out just fine. I’m sure the QB questions we have, have already been addressed in a number of ways we aren’t privy to.

We better dial back the designed QB runs. I know our coaches are in love with running the QB, but it’s a recipe for disaster - especially this year.

The depth is as bad as it's been since 2017.
Even that year, we had Zerrick Cooper & Hunter Johnson as backups.
However, we have DJ which thus far shown he'll be at least the 3 best QB we've seen the last 8 years.
