What about a full Notre Dame and Navy in the ACC?

I think this could work well for the ACC. This would make the ACC the first superpower conference with 16 teams.

We're not keeping ND football out......

of the ACC - it's their choice. They have such a major national following and a fat TV contract with NBC that there's no advantage (in their opinion) to be in the ACC in football. They don't want to have to split-up all the money they're collecting. It would be great if they someday do but don't hold your breath.
Navy would be a good addition - I agree with you on that - and I think it would be good for them as well.

Fat TV contract with NBC is less than all other major conference teams. The only thing keeping them out is pride.

I would much rather have West Virginia or Cincinnati in the ACC along with a full member Notre Dame in the long-term after their current TV contract expires.
Go Tigers!

Navy brings in: 1) A top-notch, world-renowned academic institution. 2) They replace Maryland as the DC market place-holder. 3) Like Notre Dame, they are a "national" program. 4) Bringing in Navy might actually convince Notre Dame to join as a full football member (actually I think this would have to be a condition of bringing in Navy). Then Notre Dame has three long-time rivals in the conference (GT, BC and Navy). Makes scheduling for them super-easy. 5) Bringing in Navy gives us the revenue from the Navy/Notre Dame football game. 6) Bringing in Navy gives us half of the Army/Navy game...the ONLY game on that day, watched all over the country.
I'm not saying this gets my vote, but what if it was a condition of bringing in Notre Dame fully? It's not that bad of a deal. Of course, West Virginia is interesting to me as well, for different reasons. So is UConn. Cincinnati? Not as much.

The only way to force ND to join a conference is to...
Jul 12, 2015, 9:32 PM
|
|
form an alliance which won't schedule ND. That would make their SOS so wear they'd never get a decent bowl game. It would end their ability to sell themselves to major networks for lack of participating in competitive games and the playoff system.
It's better to entice them to join by creating four super conferences which are heavily considerate of geography. That would most likely eliminate the ACC and some of the other conferences and would result in ND not playing Clemson.
I'm guessing that given a choice ND would prefer to be in the B1G now if they were forced to join. IMO, what we have now is a good as it's going to get.

Schools aren't going to stop scheduling ND. That would be counterproductive. Having ND on the schedule virtually assures a full house and a date on national TV. But more to the point---ND has been an independent since 1887. ND is doing what is has done for more than a century and a quarter. ND hasn't changed. Other schools have changed. It wasn't that long ago that schools like VaTech, Miami, Penn St., FSU, BC, Syracuse, etc., were independents. They did what is best for themselves. ND is doing what is best for itself.

They are at a huge disadvantage in recruiting, and would not be able to get anywhere close to the athletes the rest of the ACC does, especially in football and basketball. David Robinson and Roger Staubach come along once every 50 years or so.

I think the ACC will hold a spot for Notre Dame even though

they will not join in full unless they have no other options. They value their football independence tremendously. Having said that, someone in this thread mentioned that Notre Dame would probably want to join the Big Ten if they ever join a conference in full. Nothing could be further from the truth. Notre Dame has no desire to join the Big Ten and become limited to the Midwest. They value their trips to other parts of the country for their fan base. They also believe they are more of a fit for the ACC which is a mixture of small private schools like they are and large public institutions. Also, the ACC spans the entire east coast covering where most Notre Dame alumni and fans are. It also includes the fertile recruiting grounds of the deep south/Florida. They get to play in or near all the major cities on the eastern seaboard and keep their games with Southern Cal and Stanford guaranteeing them one trip to the west coast each year.
It is also in the contract with their partial membership that should they join a conference in full while this twelve year agreement and grant of rights in in effect, they would join the ACC. So, I do think if they ever joined a conference in full, it would be the ACC.
As for the 16th spot and whether it should be Navy, that depends. I would love for the 16th addition to be a school that connects the entire conference contiguously. Navy or West Virginia could accomplish that as well as Cincinnati or the university of Ohio. Connecticut would not accomplish that.
1.I would love to see West Virginia be the 16th spot. They have a large fanbase, they travel very well, and they are passionate. They are big time football and basketball. But West Virginia is locked into a GOR with the Big Twelve. When that GOR expires in ten years, perhaps they could be a possibility. 2. Navy would be my second choice. Someone in this thread said Navy brings nothing. I disagree with that. They bring top academics, a national following, prestige, and they bring back the state of Maryland as well as the D.C. market. They would have a very hard time competing in basketball. Perhaps they could join in all sports except basketball and Notre Dame in all sports but football and we would have 15 football teams and 15 basketball teams, but not really a good way to go. 3. I don't really ever want Cincinnati, maybe the University of Ohio and letting them grow into the position with the excitement of being in a power five conference. 4. The other obvious school that is a possibility is Connecticut, but they do not connect the gap in contiguousness and they really don't move the needle for me. Although, I would like to thank them for making a fool of USuCk that one day in Birmingham Bowl.
I would say yes to Navy as a 16th in Notre Dame was a full member. But I think I would prefer West Virginia as a 16th with Notre Dame as the 15th full member.

You have a pretty good handle on the ND mindset. ND has about zero desire to join the Big 10. ND is much more like the ACC schools than the Big 10 schools. ND does not want to become a Midwestern school. Will ND ever join the ACC? I don't know. But ND would be a much better fit in the ACC than the Big 10.

I've said before, I would look at Memphis. TN connects with current states plus fills a gap with Louisville and would put the acc right in between Arkansas and Mississippi and a stones throw from Louisiana and Alabama. The have a basketball tradition and are a real up and comer in football. With Justin Fuente as coach they have gone from horrible to finishing in the top 25 last year beating down byu in the bowl game...and after. In a power conference with real money they could build into something. In addition they have a great longstanding rivalry with Louisville that would be great with both programs equal.

Would like to drop Wake and pick up Cincinnati and Penn St. Wish we had taken West Virginia when we had the chance. That would would boost our SOS.

I agree with you on this. Memphis would be my top priority if I were Swoffie. They're bringing along their football program, and an addition to the ACC would only improve on that. They have always been a traditionally good basketball program. They would also improve our reach into Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisinana, which could in turn hurt $EC recruiting. I think WV would be our second best option, but we have Pitt, UVA, Syracuse and Louisville. I don't think they would help much so I'd go with an Ohio team like Cincinatti, who are decent in FB and traditionally good in BB.
