Wes Goodwin and Mickey Conn

Per Chris Low, ESPN, Wes Goodwin and Mickey Conn are going to be named co-defensive coordinators shortly. Lowe is saying according to his sources this is not just a temporary promotion for the bowl game. but will be permanent. Time will tell and Lowe was correct about coach V.
If this is true, i will be disappointed as i believe Dabo should hire a proven DC. Learning on the job is nice, but now at the DC level. Besides to move from an analyst role to DC, unbelievable.
Heard this may be because Coach V wants to bring Goodwin over. Even if that is true, he wouldn't bring him over at the DC position.
Bummed out!

Read David Hood’s post about Goodwin. Might make you feel better about him. If Dabo thinks it’s the right decision I’m All In on it.

but let's have a little faith in Dabo. I remember people saying the exact same thing when Morris left and he named Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott co-offensive coordinators. People on TNET weren't happy that he didn't go out and hire a big name for the offense. Now both those guys are about to be FBS head coaches (TE to UVA is expected to happen).
Relax and have some faith that Dabo knows how to run this program.

I worked with the team from 12-15. While he was there he was very smart and the players responded to him well. I am excited to see how it turns out

Dabo has probably been dwelling on this move for the last 4-5 years and has done all the proper vetting that is needed.

I am amazed at the people that have so little trust in a coach that has done nothing but win!

Only a former wide receivers coach who was promoted to head coach without having ever been a coordinator could be that stupid. I mean what is this guy thinking? If he had a couple on natties under his belt maybe he would get the benefit of the doubt. But Dabo? What has he done for us really?

When it comes down to it, we just got to keep bringing in top talent. Coach V was a GREAT coach and could probably work well with anyone, but like most coaches, you have to have the players to make it happen. There were probably alot of OC's that could've looked like stars if they had the offense ran by Watson and Trevor, WR's like Mike Williams, Tee Higgins and Ross....RB's like Etienne. That's just alot of fire power that could make just about anyone look good. No dif than the Joe Brady situation with that "Perfect" offense, who wouldn't look good calling plays with that team. No matter who Dabo picks, I have faith he'll make the right moves to coach these guys up, but the bottomline is....keep bringing in top recruits!

If this is the direction, I think Dabo has thought this through. Keep Goodwin in the booth to diagnose and call/suggest plays. Conn on the sideline where he has some experience managing the defensive units and signaling in the calls. From what we’ve learned, Goodwin has already been a big part of the game week prep finding the plans to exploit the opponent. Hopefully, the defense that Venables has been calling and the adjusting he’s done in-game has some of Goodwin’s finger prints on it.

You are dead on. It comes down to recruiting period. Good coach with average players looks average. Like having a good QB behind a bad OL. Maybe great but with no help will be average.

It seems Dabo finds the talent he wants for future coordinators and brings them in house with enough time for the current coordinators to train their replacements. It’s not flashy, but it’s smart.

I admit I had never even heard of Goodwin until I read Hood's article. If we're not bringing in a top tier guy like Elko or Knowles, then why not I guess. Makes more sense than bringing in some re-tread like Manny Diaz, Don Brown, Muschamp, etc. Hood implied he's the genius behind BV's defensive plans. If true, can't argue with the choice.

We have had a few named coaches during the past. They don't usually work out, and if they show any sign of life some e'jut hires them as head coach instantly. A no name coach stays longer and is more loyal and in line with the head man that gave them the opportunity. There are some exceptions, but that is the norm (Venables is one). Why pay big money for someone to come for a year or two, wreck the program and jump at the first carrot?

To squash all the "learning on the job" questions that are
Dec 8, 2021, 3:29 PM
|
|
inevitably going to pop up from us Bored Jeanuses:
Billy Conn has been here for six years under Brent Venables.
Wes Goodwin has been at Clemson for a total of TEN years, seven of those under Brent Venables.
Do we honestly just think they have been walking around all that time with blinders on and not absorbing everything they could about the way BV coached defensive football? I mean, the man did win the Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach way back in 2016. That was probably a clue that he would be a good guy to learn from, and try to emulate.
Now, I am not going to diss Coach Venables by saying these two are going to be immediately as good or better than him. But, there IS an old saying that two heads are better than one. At least if both heads have fine functioning brains in them. (A long ago co-worker of mine said, "You know, if xxxx xxxx had two heads, and HALF the brains in one of them worked, he'd be better off than he is now.") Butt, I digress. Just happened to remember that.
We may have some growing pains from Coach Conn and Coach Goodwin going forward. But, this move means that most likely, we are not in for a complete overhaul of our defensive philosophy. And, since we, or anyone else, recruits personnel to match their scheme, that is a plus right there. It also means these two will "hit the ground running", so to speak.
And, not to be Debbie Downer, but if it DOESN'T work, Dabo has already shown that he has no issues with letting even a close friend go (Napier) if he deems him inadequate in the job.
I personally would have slightly preferred an outside hire for DC. If Coach Elliot leaves, I would REALLY prefer an outside hire there. Mostly because it seems we have gotten too predictable on offense. We NEED some new wrinkles there. The irony is, Dabo is probably more likely to fill the OC slot from within than I thought he was with the DC slot.
But, here's the thing. Dabo is far and away the most successful coach we have ever had. So, I back his decisions totally, even if I may initially disagree. I guarantee you, he has many valid reasons for the moves he makes. He cherishes what he has built here too much to recklessly endanger it. Go, Tigers!

You make some great points. I loved BV after initially complaining about the hire because statistically his defenses were never elite at OU. I had family members who were Sooner fans and they would complain about him all the time. Then BV comes here and defenses are consistently top 10 and usually top 5. Maybe Dabo and team made BV better?

With that said, I hate the Co-DC or Co-OC crap.
Makes me believe he doesn’t truly trust either of them to go it alone or he does t want to hurt someone’s feelings in fear one of them may leave.
Kind of feel like that’s what we did w Scott and Elliot.

CLEMSON STAFF AND PLAYERS ON WES GOODWIN
Dec 8, 2021, 4:03 PM
|

CLEMSON STAFF AND PLAYERS ON WES GOODWIN Dec 7 2021 On3 article – Austin Brezina “Wes is a genius. He is a football mastermind,” said one former Clemson player, via On3’s Matt Connolly. “He really reminds me a lot of – I don’t want to compare him to [Bill] Belichick, but that’s the vibes I get. Like it’s football only. Dude doesn’t leave the office. He’s a grinder. He knows every single piece about defensive football.” The theme of comparing Goodwin to New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick continued with others who have spent time with him. “He is a brilliant football mind,” said another Clemson staff member via Connolly. “We called him Wesilchick – short for Belichick. Probably the most underrated football coach in all of college football. He is one of the best defensive minds I’ve ever been around. He is a great teacher. He has great patience. He has a humbleness about him, although as smart as he is, he carries himself in a great way. “I just think he’s been around sports and been around people that know sports at a high level for a long time. I think he just gets it. He’s very passionate about what he does. There’s nobody that’s going to work harder than Wes. He’s always the first one in and last one out. That’s all I’ve known him as is a worker, a grinder, just a brilliant football mind.” https://www.on3.com/college/clemson-tigers/news/strong-candidate-emerges-clemson-defensive-coordinator-position-wes-goodwin-promotion/

Thanks for the update and info. Good information. I hope for the best.
Maybe someone can help me understand why if he is this good, and i sure hope he is, has Dabo not put him on the field coaching instead of in a staff position for so long?
But hey i never understood why Bowden recommended Dabo? Obviously worked out great and glad he did!!, but would still like to know why Bowden did not have Dabo as his OC or DC in a more important and impactful role?
