I don’t actually believe Dabo is a great football mind at his core.
Great leader & would have (and has) excelled at being a Preacher, Salesman, Culture-setter, etc.
But, I’m afraid Clemson is about to take a significant step backwards.
Dabo’s model is based on continuity, and the natural cracks have propagated drastically. This is why preaching Family is a slipper slope. Family is unconditional; building a Team is conditional (based on performance). Saban builds teams & manufactures wins through a meticulous, elite appreciation of football; hence, the ability to absorb turnover. Dabo inherently does not. That’s a vulnerability of the model he’s manifested. Pivoting this is going to be difficult, if not, impossible since it violates the core principles of his culture.
Regardless, winning the ACC isn’t enough considering our recent success. The fan base will want national titles, as they should with the $100’s of millions invested to date & committed moving forward.
I don’t think better days are in the near future.
Please remember this is a football forum where concerns are welcome even if tough to swallow/consider. I’m simply providing my observations.
Crazy how fast things can change.

So a coordinator - one who Dabo hired, from a program more than halfway across the country, with no relevant experience at Clemson or in the ACC, who was being demoted at his former school, and who had given up very unattractive defensive stats prior to his hiring at Clemson - who turned out to be amazing at the job is leaving, you are terrified because the person who hired him will be in charge of replacing him? I can see why an astute businessman would be terrified of such a scenario.

D@mend if you do; d@mned if you don’t.
Brent left Oklahoma because of nepotism with the Stoops, not performance.
So, are you suggesting there are tons of Brents out there? If so, why would Oklahoma select our ‘Brent’?
Maybe they take a long time to train? If so, we should expect a drop off in performance in the near future or…?
We don’t have a plug-and-play system. It’s time intensive and hard to replicate; hence, the “there’s something in these hills” concept.

To be honest, he didn't do nearly as well as DC at Oklahoma as he did at Clemson. The OK fans didn't even care he was leaving. He's a great DC, but the sky isn't going to fall with a replacement.

I dont think this is the suggestion at all but if you do not think Clemson has had good to great defenses more so than not before BV, you have not watched Clemson football very long.
There are other good DC’s too.

I agree we're ok because we do have Dabo. To attack his faith is just bs from a idiot who doesn't know his butt from his elbow. Terry Don Phillips saw his ability and passion for the game as well as ability and knowlege of football. The people who are putting pot these (scared stiff) tweets should shut up and start supporting our team snd stop trying to cause panic in the ranks. WE will be fine.

It’s not simply coaching; it’s a company, a business.
A business becomes a company when there’s culture. So, effectively your business is the culture.
There are plenty of second tier businesses that survive [10+ wins, ACC championships], but Clemson requires thriving [CFP, national championships].
Woof.

I wrote that he “isn’t a great football mind” to be specific - like a Saban, Belichick, McVay.
When I engage with people like you, I realize that I’m entertaining someone in a trailer park who can’t spell, conveniently revise information for their own positional gain, and fail to be able to have an appreciable conversation.
Please strive to be less ignorant. There’s plenty of ways to do so in modern society, and you obviously have plenty of time.
Regards.

Panic? I’m sorry my perspective has deceived you.
There’s this phenomenon in behavioral psychology called ‘mirroring’.
Maybe you’re projecting your internal feelings of late because I couldn’t be more calm regarding the situation.
While I hate it for the Tigers, I anticipate this being true.

Coach Swinney advised Jeff Scott he should take the South Florida job that it was a good opportunity and a good fit. My kids have grown up and live and work away from home. They are very much still family. Family is caring nurturing helping advising wishing the best for someone. You evidently do not know even a minimal amount about Coach Swinney, culture or family. I think you should look inside yourself and determine who you are before you try to inform us who someone else is.

Who I am? I am a Clemson fan.
Fanatic - a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal [toward Clemson].
I’m simply observing what I feel is on the near-term horizon for the team.
It’s an opinion. The reality will play out regardless of our opinions.

By that logic, we should expect to be back in the national championship game 3 of the next 5 years… just like Saban’s teams.
If not, Dabo should be fired.

Well, hoss, Dabo has been in the national title game 3 of the last five years. So, by your logic, he gets to keep his job. What a ridiculous take. Clemson was a laughing stock for twenty years before Dabo. Get a grip, man!

That’s correct. He does have a job because of his performance. I have not suggested he should be fired.
I’m suggesting Clemson is at an inflection point, a proverbial fork in the road. He has some big decisions ahead.
I am not confident he will make the ones necessary to continue achieving at our recent rate of success.

It depends on who he hires in the off-season. If we get a proven coach with a track record of success, we'll be fine. If we continue down the path of hiring former players with limited coaching experience I expect the slide to continue.
Dabo will decide what kind of program this will be after the bowl game.

USC, the Pirates of the late 1970s, the old misfit Oakland Raiders, etc.
I just want to see Dabo adjust. He has to with the portal and NIL. We don't have to decline. He just has to adjust.
The PAW Journey needs to a become a PAW trip for some players. Get a wholesome company to sponsor your walk ons like BYU has arranged. Get the whole team sponsored so each player gets some NIL action. And for G-d's sake, impose a social media ban.

One, you prefaced that you hope you're wrong. Thumbs Up for having the guts to come on to this clic site and share your thoughts.
I see a lot of people that TD your post and spit kurt little remarks don't invest in tnet. Known you a while and you're a true Tiger through and through. Whether I agree or disagree, we can have a civil debate.
When I first came on tnet in 2005, it used to be respectful. Now it's mostly a clic trying to get tds and laughs from the other clic buds.

This is not anti-Dabo propaganda. He’s done an excellent job to date; however, I’m expressing concern for the future, not past.
To express a contrary opinion is not propaganda.
Again, spelling escapes you unless you are suggesting South Carolina fans would buy me a diner.
It’s dinner*, not diner.

Don't let the mouthy types get to you. You handle yourself admirably (quite admirably, indeed), but this is unfortunately what the internet often is.
On the issue itself- think my overall assessment is a tad bit more optimistic than yours, but still along the same lines. That is to say, I have some of the same concerns and think that your prognostication is a reasonable possibility based on valid concerns, and yet, Dabo has surprised me before, and thus at this juncture I still would not wager against him, especially if he has any level of self-reflection and self-assessment (despite his often overly defensive rhetoric that would seem to indicate otherwise), brought on by this season (and now off-season) of tumult and it's attendant criticism.

Dabo is and has always been focused on the important things. He has a proven track record of success. He still connects with young men and parents with that message. We are in a time of transition, with the portal and NIL. The men of character will rise at the end and those that chased the trends of today will blow away.

Reasonable points and you may possibly be right about the perils of “family” culture. You may also be wrong about Dabo. I have observed that he is a forward thinker and meticulous planner. He is certainly loyal but he measures performance and holds players and staff responsible. You may think that this season was unacceptable and that’s your prerogative but I trust Dabo. I started to trust him halfway through his first press conference. I knew he was the right choice when he made our punter go back on the field and sprint off.
If, when Bowden resigned, we had the choice of possibly suffering through a 9 or 10 win season or 3 but in exchange we would have 2 NC in… say a 20 year stretch, who of us would have said no to that deal? Look at all of the coaches that have come and gone from “big football schools” that have been unable to do what Dabo has done.
I think he’s earned the right to ask for our trust and patience.

I don't think you've paid a lot of attention if you really believe what you wrote. What you're saying is a popular rumor started by our friends in Columbia. However, it couldn't be further from the truth and it's pretty evident if you've ever listened to Dabo talk shop. For goodness sake, he was promoted from WR to HC here at Clemson. That's how well he was regarded as a position coach. He also happens to have all the other CEO stuff in spades. Have you ever read the Chansi Stuckey article where he credits Dabo with converting him from so-so QB to an NFL wide receiver?
Anyway, to me, a much more likely scenario is that BV is about to fail on a grand scale. He's a great DC, but I see no evidence that he's got the CEO skills required to run a program. Especially one that is going to get their butt cut for many years in the SEC regardless of who is their coach.
I guess we'll all find out soon enough, but I have no doubt Dabo has us covered.
Cheers, marlboro

Our drop off this year exposed some real issues within our program, especially as they relate to coaching and player development on offense.
Dabo has done an unbelievable job building our program to elite status, but our fall off this year was notable.
I personally don't see us being a playoff team next year either, even if Venables had stayed.
The loss of Venables is huge though.
Dabo has recently hired from within or brought in guys with Clemson ties, all in the name of "Clemson family." While this is a nice idea, my concern is that we have coaches on our staff who aren't ready for the huge responsibility of coaching at an elite program. I'm not going to name specific coaches, but a quick search at many of our coaches on offense reveals that they weren't qualified on paper for the roles they have.
This isn't to say that Dabo's strategy recently with hires can't work. I think it can. But we must be prepared for the fact that it can't, especially if we look at the recent evidence.

"...a quick search at many of our coaches on offense reveals that they weren't qualified on paper for the roles they have" then you you say there's recent evidence. What evidence?
The evidence is we were 4-3 at one point with an offense struggling to execute at the most key position on the field, and somehow the offensive minds were able to scrap together enough plays to win 5 straight. With a new coach, the running backs were the key to what we've accomplished. In spite of losing the bulk of our wide scholarship receiver group for the season or significant time (Justyn Ross, Joe Ngata, Frank Ladson, EJ Williams, Brannon Spector, Will Taylor) this season, we've seen the emergence of Beaux and Dacari Collins who have helped stabilize the issue and help gain 9 wins after it appeared the ship was sinking.
So again, what evidence?
You just keep swinging and missing in your hypocritical attempts to drag the football program down to the basketball program's level. Rinse and repeat.
Speaking of rinse and repeat, was it the facilities, fans, or administration who was responsible for letting Miami come back to beat us yesterday?

Given the disappointing season coming on the heels of a disappointing loss in last years CFP it’s understandable that the faithful are beginning to question Dabo’s culture. I remember having some similar thoughts when The Chad left. I thought he was crazy to have co coordinators on O. It worked. I trust that Dabo will put feelings aside and do his best to analyze the causes for recent failures. He will address those failures. Doesn’t mean the changes he chooses to make are guaranteed to succeed but changes will be made. I do not buy the theory that family culture will prevent him making hard decisions, there is no evidence of that in his history. I’m all in with Dabo.

Losing someone the caliber of BV will definitely hurt. It would hurt any team. Dabo hired him. I don’t think it was a blind luck hire. As I recall, Dabo had to sell him on the vision. I also recall Dabo stating several years ago that he always has a replacement in mind (his notebook story). Veneble type coaches don’t grow on trees, but CU doesn’t necessarily need a clone of him to be highly successful (measured as being a top 10 defense). I do have faith that a good hire will be made.
On another note: CU’s defensive starters will be lights out next year, however we can expect a significant drop off in ‘23 due to some recruiting misses of late (primarily DL). We need someone that recruit extremely well, and instantly impact the 2023 class.

Much of this revenue is redistributed (haphazardly) and the football program never sees. Return on Investment ratio is tenfold. How could you have missed this fact? You embecile.

Did you honestly want Dabo as head coach? I have no problem admitting that I was wrong, but I thought grading him as a "D+ hire" was being generous. Everybody can get on here and say that they loved the Dabo Swinney hire from the start, but at least 95% of them will be lying.

It's interesting to see the number of down votes on your post. I will agree that it is not Dabo's "football mind" that has gotten him where he is. But I believe that there are only a handful of coordinators on each side of the ball that are innovative and adapt to the situation, and there is one less on the defensive side of the ball this morning.
I believe that this might be as good a year as any for us to lose BV. I think that the way everything has gone that Dabo will be under a lot of pressure to go outside of the Clemson family in his search for a replacement. That salesman, preacher, cheerleader, and CEO has a very attractive product to pull a DC out of anywhere but a handful of schools. It won't be Venables, but it will be someone who is very, very good.

You have a point, IF the reason for the departures is/was from discontent. Given the reason for departure is advancement its totally natural. Even the strongest families’ kids leave the house eventually. Unfortunately it looks like all our kids are leaving for college on the same day and it sucks, I’m not going to lie, but it will be ok. Now, if stories start leaking from BV and TE about being unhappy, that’s a different story.
Dabo is the architect, let’s not forget that. It will be tough/ impossible to replace BV but this day was coming and we should be grateful for the time we had with him.
Go tigers.

We are lucky to have Dabo. I remember Bowden seeming like he was content with being second to FSU. Did anyone here expect the results Dabo has had here? Best coach in school history, and it’s not as close as Ford homers would tell you. No disrespect to Ford. Label it what ever you want, but Dabo has it. Give the man a break. He’s earned benefit of the doubt.

What Clemson has done is exactly what Alabama did.
Saban hired Lane Kiffin, a pro style offensive mind, and tasked him with developing a spread offense form Alabama. Since then Alabam has ran that same offense and have hired good play callers to run it.
Saban has groomed guys to run HIS defense.
Clemson hired Chad Morris to come in and develop Clemson's offense. Tony and Jeff were promoted to run that offense.
Clemson hired BV to set the standard for our defense and I assume grooming has been taking place over the last 9 years to run that defense.
If a new OC is hired/promoted they will run the Clemson offense.
Same philosophy as Bama in terms of X's and O's management.
