But we're not even close to being a national championship contender. Haven't been for quite some time. So...while I realize it's a defeatist attitude, does it really matter when we get bounced? If we won the regional we would just lose in the supers. And if by some act of God we got to the CWS we would get destroyed.
So I'm not really sure why everyone is so upset. We all knew that with our pitching staff we couldn't truly compete. And that was exactly what played out in the late stages of tonight's game.
I will be pulling hard for us to somehow win this regional but I have no delusions that we are actually going to compete for a title.

Agreed. It is a lack of talent issue, pure and simple. All sports are a money

game now. I do not know where we stand in the baseball dollar pool. I would hope that it would be as good or better than West Virginia, though. Do we have a pitcher who can throw 95 or better on the roster?

Ddub, you nailed it. As the season progressed, it was quite evident that we just don't have the Jimmy and Joe's. Our recruiting has been 4th or 5th in the acc alone. Sure baseball is a developmental game, all sports are. But, the better the Jimmy and Joe's, your odds increase dramatically. Ask Dabo.
You also, as a coach, identify talent and get them here. The transfers we brought in were below average. Is what it is.

ESPN has ruined sports, this post is a perfect example.
No offense, but the idea that anything but championship is a failure is asinine. Hosting a regional is an accomplishment. Winning 40 games is an accomplishment.
This isn’t me saying you shouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed in the result , but your attitude that everything else is meaningless stinks.
I say it very much does matter when we get bounced.

I'm right there with you. I'm not upset whatsoever because we are already hosting our own regional. Considering our talent and lack of pitching tonight's loss does not upset me because I had zero expectations of actually advancing.
I am in no way badmouthing this team. I am grateful for a good season but I genuinely believe hosting our own regional was the ceiling.

If we are good enough to host a regional

Why are we not good enough to beat a West Virginia team who fell apart to end their season?
And theres been plenty teams through the years who went on a postseason run in college baseball that wasnt expected. One of Bakich’s own teams, Michigan made it all the way to the finals one year

The way these tournaments are constructed, the odds were against us.

Coming into this regional we had one pitcher who could legitimately start for other contenders. Just one. And unfortunately tonight he got out lit up a bit and was unable to bring his A game.
We just simply aren't built to advance. With Knaak at his absolutely best and with time to prepare we can compete with anyone in the country.
But that's just not how these regionals, etc are set up. The team will the deepest bullpen will ALWAYS eventually rise to the top in a tournament format.

Fair enough, I’m pretty bummed about the way that one ended. But I still really appreciate this team and what they’ve done. Would hate for that to get lost in the noise.

Because getting to Omaha is much bigger accomplishment

For everyone involved than losing in a regional and we haven’t been in 15 years so it would be a big deal to go back.
Even last year getting to the supers was a bigger deal than losing in regionals again.

I get that logic, but if simply getting to Omaha

Is our number one priority, that proves my point. The implication is that we don't actually expect to win it and would be satisfied simply participating.
Isn't it easier to just rip the bandaid off now rather than prolonging false hope for an inevitable loss? I realize this comes off as cynical but my point is that I'm not entirely sure why people are upset.
Hosting a regional was absolutely this team's ceiling. Winning it would certainly be nice but with our pitching it was going to be an uphill battle.

I just cant understand this line of thinking at all

Once you get to Omaha you have a chance. We’ve seen surprising results in Omaha through the years. Being an Omaha program is definitely better than being a never make it to Omaha program which we are now becoming.
This is like saying you’d rather just have 8-4 football seasons rather than make the playoffs if we don’t ultimately win a national title.

Then I'm not sure why you can't understand this line of thinking. Lol.
Baseball is not football. The cream always rises to the top and only the teams with the deepest and most consistent bullpens will advance come tournament time.
Hell I remember UCLA winning it all several years ago and was consistently scoring 1-2 runs per game. It was an absolute clinic.
But regardless, we aren't that. And that was on display quite literally all season. We are a very good team, but were never built to compete in the tournament format.

That couldn’t be more wrong. College baseball has had way more surprise national champions through the years than college football. Remember Fresno State winning as a #4 seed? Ole Miss barely got into the tournament and win it all two years ago. Michigan and Oklahoma made the final series when they weren’t even regional hosts. And not all of those teams were pitching based either.
Teams like Kent State and Stony Brook making Omaha? The fact that the #1 overall seed hadn’t won it all from 2000-2023. There’s countless examples.
Look how many 4 seeds won yesterday.
And yeah we made the final in the ACC tournament beating two teams better than West Virginia.

Again, pitching always rises to the top in these tournament formats. The team with the deepest and most consistent bullpens will almost always come out the victor.
