The practice of placing rubber ducks on Jeeps is known as "Jeep Ducking" or "Duck Duck Jeep". It's a tradition that originated in 2020 when Allison Parliament, a Canadian Jeep owner, left a duck on another Jeep with a note that said "Have a Great Day". The gesture was intended to spread cheer and bring a smile to someone's face during the pandemic.
The tradition has since spread throughout the Jeep community and into nearly a dozen other countries. It's a simple way for Jeep enthusiasts to create bonds, share kindness, and make each other smile. The ducks can be found on the windshield, side mirrors, or dashboard of a Jeep. Anyone can participate, regardless of whether they own a Jeep.

there's even a CAT Bus tooling around campus that must have 50 or so on the front dashboard.

I drive a Wrangler and I started randomly finding them on my hood or door handle when coming out of a store. This was around or during the COVID period. I was puzzled much like you, thinking a kid put it there or somebody found the duck on the ground and thought it fell out of my vehicle. As it continued happening I finally caught on to this as a "trend".

I probably have 20 or so that I have been "gifted" over the last 4-5 years or so.

I think it's dumb too, but not much I can do about it.

Kind of funny now that I read that perspective.

I had a buddy, Francis Fagan, back in '70s. I was at his house one Saturday morn and a commercial came on the Chatt TV station which was an advertisement for the upcoming Duck race on the river. Evidently one could make a donation to some random charity and get their name on one of the thousand of ducks which were to be released on the river.

The first duck to cross some random finish line down river won the race and the person whose name was on it got some trivial award and a basket of fruit or some other lame prize. Just call the number and make the pledge and....

So Fagan called the number and screamed Duck a... into the phone. "She said I must be a very sick person to want to do that...'

A week later he had a wire hooked to his TV which muted it when he flipped a little toggle switch. It was the first mute button in the world, as far as I know.
