Aug 3, 2022, 7:04 PM

Yes it is, and this is why I do hope that the NFL will soon end up like the MLB years ago when fan had had enough of their BS, and just stopped going to the games. It has taken them a long time for them to build fan trust back. If DW4 gets an extra hour more than the 6 games, I'll never watch another NFL game as I did for about 20 years, until Dabo teams started putting a lot of Tigers in the NFL, and it will be really easy this time to shut them out!!!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

CYA from a PR perspective for them and more than likely will

Aug 3, 2022, 4:17 PM

result in a CYA from Goodell b/c he doesn't care about the players so.. He'll probably get slapped with 9 games if I had to guess. Which is really tough to get in a rhythm as a QB that late in the season. Its designed hoping to make him look bad and make the Browns look bad.

The NFLPA can appeal today or tomorrow morning as well, correct? That would be the best case for Deshaun and hopefully Roger would have to appease both.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope...the league's decision will be final and binding

Aug 4, 2022, 8:01 AM

What a joke of a process. Why even have a third party judge make a ruling if the league can appeal it and then make their own ruling? Hell, I'd be pissed if I was one of the other owners. Why are we wasting money paying this retired judge if this is how it's going to go down. I hope DW and his lawyers sue the NFL over this if (excuse me when) he gets a longer suspension and fined.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, this will get interesting

Aug 3, 2022, 4:21 PM

Obviously this situation sucks for all involved and what Deshaun did was wrong. He abused his power and celebrity. But i will also say i think he is a better man than this and it sucks that he will be made the poster child for sexual harassment for the NFL when so many in the past have skated by. All the news outlets are piling on. Time and character improvements by him will help heal his image, but in the meantime this medicine is gonna be painful!

I hope Deshaun sues the NFL’s a$$ off and wins. They did nothing to Robert Kraft.

Hello Federal Court

Aug 3, 2022, 4:52 PM

I would suspect the PA appeals on Watson's behalf. I know I would. The NFL has a checkered past of exhibiting arbitrary and inconsistent behavior when dispensing suspensions to players. Last time I checked, a grand jury has never returned a criminal indictment (not for a lack of trying) and almost all of the civil cases are wrapped up. There is no evidence that he committed any violent acts. Ezekiel Elliott was alleged to have committed several acts of violent domestic abuse and he got six games. All of this amounts to why the retired judge arbitrator gave DW six games. Roger is caving to outside pressure here. I wonder if he will have the stones to issue the new suspension himself or appoint a designee.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree that Roger and his boys just doing want a woman judge making a ruling in their sandbox.

Aug 3, 2022, 5:10 PM

Media just wants controversy to increase ratings.

My take is that both the NFL and PA created a process _ then right out of the box, Roger wants to establish control over the actual discipline. Why have a process if the discipline is arbitrarily set by the Commish. Just avoid the pretense of impartiality and go straight to the Commish.

Re: Well, this will get interesting

Aug 3, 2022, 4:56 PM

Sue Robinson is a former judge and as arbiter of this case she found that Watson is guilty of unwanted sexual contact. I am absolutely stunned how many of you are willing to decide that because Watson is a Clemson Man and a great football player (and let's be honest, up til now a seemingly great person) that what he did is OK. I was not on the Grand Jury and never saw the evidence, but the NFL's own impartial arbiter did see the evidence and found Watson guilty of unwanted sexual contact.

Aug 4, 2022, 8:36 AM [ in reply to Re: Well, this will get interesting ]

How many times do people have to point out that Kraft was never accused of sexual assault? He went to a known rub and tug joint and paid the woman directly for services rendered. Watson did not. They are not comparable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well, this will get interesting

Aug 3, 2022, 5:47 PM [ in reply to Re: Well, this will get interesting ]

She did not find him guilty of unwanted sexual contact. He was found to have violated the player conduct policy and was disciplined with a six game suspension.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did you read the decision?

Aug 3, 2022, 6:05 PM

At the bottom of page 8 of the decision, Robinson states "I find evidence sufficient to demonstrate that Mr. Watson knew, or should have known, that any contact between his ##### and these therapists was unwanted." Sounds like she found him guilty of unwanted sexual contact to me. The disciplinary determination was based on Watson's violation of the player conduct policy because of the unwanted sexual contact.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well, this will get interesting

Aug 4, 2022, 8:55 AM [ in reply to Re: Well, this will get interesting ]

You might want to read her decision before pretending to know what it says. Page 9:

"I, therefore, find that the NFL carried it's burden to prove, by a preponderance of the evidence, that Mr Watson engaged in sexual assault (as defined by the NFL) against the four therapists identified in the Report".

And how did the NFL define sexual assault as part of their policy?

"unwanted sexual contact with another person" (Page 6)

So yes, she did find him guilty of unwanted sexual conduct.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, she said worse

Aug 6, 2022, 11:18 AM [ in reply to Re: Well, this will get interesting ]

I have a feeling many people didn't actually read or hear what she said is all, but she explicitly called it assault outright for 4 of the 5 cases she ruled against.

It's the other NFL-related stuff, too, for sure, like the Texans-branded NDA & using his NFL identity when he hired the women, etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well, this will get interesting

Aug 3, 2022, 8:40 PM [ in reply to Re: Well, this will get interesting ]

A grand jury is a ridiculously low bar. The fact that they did not indict Watson on a single charge says a lot. I am not saying that Watson behaved appropriately but it would seem to me to be a stretch to classify it as "sexual contact".

Watson, though he was paid, has already served a year's suspension for all practical purposes. For an elite athlete, the money will be secondary. DW already has more money than he could spend on himself, so the time out of the game is much more relevant. A 6 game suspension, really brings the total to 23 games for something that a grand jury decided that there was not even enough evidence to bring charges.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well, this will get interesting

Aug 3, 2022, 9:17 PM [ in reply to Re: Well, this will get interesting ]

A Grand Jury (12 people) decides whether there is enough evidence for a court case. They decided that there wasn't enough evidence, or it was too circumstantial, for potential conviction.
Sue Robinson (one person) decided there was enough evidence to give the NFL a black eye, per his contract.
Situations are not similar. One is based soley on actual evidence, the other gives more weight to circumstantial evidence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well, this will get interesting

Aug 4, 2022, 6:02 AM [ in reply to Re: Well, this will get interesting ]

This is a massive case of he said she said. No criminal charges were ever filed in any of these cases. If there was evidence of unwanted sexual contact or sexual assault he’d have been charged. The difference in a civil case as opposed to a criminal one is huge. There are players playing right now who have punched the sh$t out of their pregnant baby mommas, thrown them down the steps and they’ve served no suspensions. The RB from the bengals was on video sucker punching a 110lb girl at a pizza place because she disrespected him and nothing. This is the NFL trying to make itself look like the defenders of women. If Watson were white would he be getting the same treatment? I hate bringing up the race card. It sickens me but I guarantee it has something to do with it

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well, this will get interesting

Aug 4, 2022, 9:45 AM [ in reply to Re: Well, this will get interesting ]

Yeah, but that's not what this is about.

I think many of us are combining the allegations of rape with what we DO know happened, which is what this part of the story is about; the NFL-branded NDA's, the special towels, the off-campus facilitation, not using businesses, the pattern of where he asked to be touched, etc.

Agreed. Seems i have heard innocent until proven guilty before. Thought it was tied to US laws but some apparently would like for the opposite........

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, it all worked out exactly that way

Aug 4, 2022, 9:47 AM

When you think about it, that's exactly how it worked out.

There was no evidence of rape, so he didn't go to jail for it & the cases were COMPLETELY dropped outright.

Separately, this NFL penalty is about the other stuff is all, like the Texans-branded NDA's, the special towels, that sort of thing.

for starting and promoting this witch hunt. They token interviewed coaches for appearances, lied to Deshaun about who was interviewed, and then dug up dirt on 4 to change the narrative. Ask yourself - why have all the star players left this dumpster fire of an organization? Are Sheriff Roger and his Barney Fife Gang of Deputies above the law? They have been caught with their pants down like hmmmm... Robert Kraft.

Yeah, how dare they want to punish a guy of sexually assaulting 30 women for more than 6 games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I hate the NFL

Aug 3, 2022, 8:56 PM

You understand that 2 grand juries found that there was insufficient evidence to bring a single charge. So we are talking about inadvertent contact with his genitalia. If he tended to get an erection when his groin was massaged, then it was poor judgement not to warn the masseuses, but it hardly classifies as sexual assault.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not exactly, but I hear you

Aug 4, 2022, 9:43 AM

I mean, to be fair, what the punishment here is about isn't from the sexual assaults that may not have happened.

This was about things like his pattern of behavior, the special towels he brought each time, the NFL-branded NDA's he made each woman sign, etc.

I hate it all, but even if all they did was talk or his junk just slipped out onto them or whatever, the only one who can set it right is Deshaun when he CAN finally speak about it; the problem is he still can't as there's one final case remaining.

Deshaun is going to lose. He didn't play last year. If he doesn't play this year, I don't see how he comes back. Another year older, having not played, makes it very difficult to be in playing form. Practice doesn't keep you game sharp.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Goodell was not going to let the Commissioner's Office

Aug 4, 2022, 7:41 AM

actually lose any power in negotiations with the NFLPA. He just threw them what looked like a bone on paper, but he had no intention of ever abiding by what that Arbitrator decided, if it was anything different than what he originally wanted. The whole thing was a Kangaroo Court.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Goodell was not going to let the Commissioner's Office

Aug 4, 2022, 9:52 AM

The process change wasn't just throwing a bone on paper. It fundamentally removed the ability of the commissioner to unilaterally levy punishment. It was never intended to remove sentencing power from the commissioner, nor did the NFLPA push hard for that. It was only intended to take the decision of whether there was a policy violation out of the commissioner's hands, which it did. It's working exactly as both sides agreed it should.

Will it make a difference?

Aug 4, 2022, 9:37 AM

Would one year make any more difference to most fans than 6 games?

Two years?

1 million? Ten million?

NO punishment from the league will matter; that's why there shouldn't be one.

Bottom line, the only way for Deshaun to come out on top of this is to finally finish the last case, then he can be candid about what happened, explain why he didn't believe it was wrong (like sleeping around, for example), & begin to make amends the way he's helped countless others since before he was even in the league in the first place.

Deshaun is that kind of leader, & it would only surprise me if he did nothing. Still, the waiting is awful.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know what #4 did or did not do but....

Aug 4, 2022, 9:46 AM

...it doesn't sound good. Probably didn't break any laws but his conduct sounds like it was far from what it should have been. DW4 would probably be the last guy I'd expect poor behavior from. He certainly made some bad decisions and he's gonna pay for it. I know that if this was a UGAck or USuC player you'd want the guy banned for life.

So does this mean that the Woke commissioner and the NFL think the female arbiter could do a man's job? Sad, that they took the path they did. Either use an arbiter and stick with the decision or bypass arbitration altogether. Maybe it's time for the NFL be burned to the ground by a lawsuit from #4 to reveal the hypocrisy of the NFL.

It seems the opposite, in a way

Aug 4, 2022, 11:08 AM

To me, it sounds like they're actually listening to her vastly more than not.

On Monday, for example, she was explicit about suggesting the NFL should be ABLE to have a harsher punishment than 6 games, but that there was no precedent for it. She just as explicitly said the NFL should deliberately address it & change the precedent for how they punish violations of league policies.

It should have happened ages ago (& that, too, sounded like part of her point), but it may be history in the making instead.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: NFL to appeal Deshaun Watson six-game suspension

Aug 4, 2022, 11:07 AM

I do not understand why the NFL would want to keep one of their best, and most controversial, players off of the field and off TV. When he plays again he certainly will attract a lot of attention, both pro and con, and a lot of viewers. Seems like a dumb decision that will lose audience rather than gain it.
