I really hope Coach Elliott has put some wrinkles in

Dec 18, 2020, 12:36 PM

the offensive gameplan. He has shown this year that his playcalling is not his strength. It has been mediocre at best and very predictable.

Wrinkles? Hell, we need an all new playbook!***

in terms of the play calls.

Let's not forget that we might also be limited by our offensive line as well as injuries impacting our wide receiver depth.

Screens on 3rd and long are generally not intended to pick

Dec 18, 2020, 12:53 PM

up a 1st down. It's usually just a safe play call you see in certain situations such as:

1) Backed up deep in your own territory and trying to get some space to punt.

2) Trying to pick up a little more yardage for a FG attempt.

3) A safe play call in those "3rd and forever" situations where it's very unlikely you can pick up the 1st down anyway, and you don't want to risk an interception.

IMO running a screen on 3rd and 7 is probably a bad play call, but running a screen on 3rd and 20 is entirely reasonable.

This is shaping up to be a thread where all the "football gurus" talk about how Tony Elliott isn't good at his job.

Then there will be a sprinkle of posters with sarcastic remarks making those "gurus" look stupid but the "gurus" won't notice the sarcasm because they think they are right and know what they are talking about.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Elliott has forgotten more about football than I'll ever

Dec 18, 2020, 12:51 PM

know about football, but anyone can see our offensive playcalling has been mediocre. I'm not saying he's bad at his job. He is a great recruiter and coach, but playcalling is not his strongest attribute as a coach.

Yes, TE calls the plays. Input or not from others doesn’t change this fact.

Dec 18, 2020, 1:07 PM [ in reply to Jeff Scott suggested the play that ]

He also has input from Trevor, the RBs, the WRs, the TEs, the OL, Grisham, and Pearman.

Elliott makes the play call though after he puts together all of the information from his sources.

Re: he had help from Jeff Scott as well

Dec 18, 2020, 1:04 PM [ in reply to he had help from Jeff Scott as well ]

He didn't have Jeff Scott's help any more before this year than he has had Tyler Grisham's help this season.

Jeff Scott was a co-OC in title and paycheck with Elliott but Elliott was always very plainly titled the playcaller.

something. It wasn't! You're suffering from memory loss or recency bias or something. We haven't had a super creative offense at any point during this 6 year run.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yall act like our offense was different last year or

Dec 18, 2020, 1:09 PM

Just curious, and I know you are on the sane side of this conversation, but what is a "creative offense"

The triple option can get pretty creative.

Running lots of trick plays can get pretty creative.

Shifts, motions, and movement presnap can be called creative.

In your opinion what is a creative offense?

Dec 18, 2020, 1:00 PM [ in reply to Elliott has forgotten more about football than I'll ever ]

Apparently you are taking your forgetting things about football comment literally because people called him a genius when took Cole Stoudt from a floppy noodle to dominating Oklahoma in a bowl with his adjustments in play calling.

"Anyone can see that our offensive playcalling has been mediocre" is statement made that insinuates that you see things during a football game that none of our coaches are seeing.

Tony Elliott has called plays for 6 straight seasons for Clemson.

The only times he gets questioned are when he loses games (even if it's a poor defensive performance), had a QB in Bryant who limits the passing game, has his best WRs injured, or when he has a weak offensive line. He also gets questioned when a combination of those things are in place.

Elliott doesn't call plays autonomously. He gets input from other coaches and players. Is every offensive coach on staff bad at calling plays?

Dec 18, 2020, 1:02 PM

We may see 1 play that we haven't seen this season.

We aren't going to overhaul our offense for this game.

The only reason to overhaul an offensive or defensive playbook is if you are severely outmatched and you are trying a boom or bust approach for a big upset in one game.

We tend to debut one or two new plays for the CFP every

Dec 18, 2020, 1:11 PM [ in reply to Re: I really hope Coach Elliott has put some wrinkles in ]

year which we might see early for ND this year, but i wouldn't expect more than that. In 2016 the big wrinkle was that fake toss to the left followed by QB power up the middle with Watson. It then became a bit of a staple the next year with KB at QB. We don't run that as much with Trevor, but i think we pulled it out in either the Pitt or VT game recently. We also ran that quick toss out to Gallman that game after motioning everyone to the other side of the field that left OSU with like no defenders on the right side. That was probably something schemed up specifically for that game because i don't recall seeing it again after that.

I can't think of others right now off the top of my head, but there's usually at least 1 new play that gets debuted for the playoff and then gets incorporated into the offense and maybe a couple others designed specifically for the opponent.

Re: I really hope Coach Elliott has put some wrinkles in

Dec 18, 2020, 1:16 PM

We lost our #1 receiver for the entire season before the season even started. Then we've had what was expected to be our #3 and #4 receivers miss most of the season as well. Seriously, go and look at our depth chart at receiver...Will Swinney is our #5 listed receiver, and Will Brown is listed on the 2nd team depth chart as well. No offense to Will Brown, but who is that?

On top of that we had to play 2 games without our starting QB, and nearly all of our fans would agree that we have OL issues...and even with all of that we're averaging 46 points per game. Yet, somehow we have fans complaining of poor play calling.

Seriously, if before the season started someone told you that Rodgers and Powell would basically be our only consistent receivers this season, Lawrence would miss 2 games, and our OL would play poorly, how many of you would realistically think we'd be putting up 46 points per game?

Dec 18, 2020, 4:52 PM [ in reply to Re: I really hope Coach Elliott has put some wrinkles in ]

Up the middle, when it’s not working. He needs to find more creative ways of getting etn in the game..

a lot of folks on here can’t understand why we didn’t throw the ball to get a first down at the end of the last ND game. IMO, that lost the game for us. The running game was not working, and dj was playing great. We rand the ball 3 times, got stuffed or went out of bounds and gave no the ball back with too much time and a tired defense..

Dec 18, 2020, 7:08 PM

People blaming Elliott for the last drive in regulation against ND are pointing blame at the wrong person. No way was that not a decision made by Dabo. Elliott may have selected the plays, but I guarantee you Dabo gave him directions on whether to play aggressive or conservative in that situation.

Oh deer lowered. Cue the "derrr look at our stats and wins"

Dec 18, 2020, 2:24 PM

guys. The play calling has been.....lets call it vanilla.....for years. Its been masked by out talenting everyone we play and the fact that we have had dominant defenses combined with generational QB's for the last 6 years. Just watch other teams play the game - they can fling the ball all over the field, you never know where its going, they spread it out, its exciting and doesnt look like a struggle just to get a first down. Our receivers are never open. The screen left, screen right looks like freaking Rob Spence days, we hardly run any crossing patterns, jet sweeps, or anything else to keep opposing defense off balance. I honestly have no idea what some of yall are watching.
