Oct 22, 2012, 8:19 AM

Good Monday morning to you...

Alabama remains #1, but the new #2 is breathing down their neck. Kansas St. and Florida were the big movers at the top with their impressive conference victories.

Here are the games this week between Top 30 teams:
#23 Cincinnati @ #29 Louisville (Friday)- First shot at sorting out the top of the Big East
#17 USC @ #19 Arizona - Big road test for the Trojans against a sneaky-good Arizona team
#3 Florida vs. #16 Georgia - With a win, Florida wins the SEC East, Georgia controls it
#32 TCU @ #22 Oklahoma St. - The Cowboys actually control their destiny in the Big 12, but with an impossible road ahead
#7 Texas Tech @ #2 Kansas St. - The Wildcats try to stay in the BCS hunt
#4 Notre Dame @ #6 Oklahoma - Winner stays in the BCS race
#15 Mississippi St. @ #1 Alabama - First loss for the Bulldogs, or a stunner?

Cole @ Beach Cole w/ Clemson Hat

Point diff. helps them...they are 15th nationally.

Oct 22, 2012, 8:25 AM

I think they were 3rd or 4th going into the weekend.

Actually, it's point differential that really seemed to hurt

Most of the top teams have tough roads ahead.

Oct 22, 2012, 8:25 AM

Someone will have earned their BCS spot if they run the table.

Here are how some of the highly-ranked teams rank in toughest remaining schedule.

Keep in mind, for SEC and Pac-12 teams, this does not include their conference championship game.

2. Southern Cal
3. Mississippi St.
8. Alabama
11. LSU
12. Oregon St.
14. Oklahoma
17. Kansas St.
28. Texas Tech
29. Florida
30. Oregon
59. Notre Dame

HAHA! Drop 5 spots after losing by 33.

Oct 22, 2012, 8:32 AM

SEC! SEC! SEC!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Got a SOS boost.

Oct 22, 2012, 8:36 AM

Their SOS will peak at this point, so they might have to beat Tennessee and Arky fairly soundly to maintain that ranking.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Having 2 loss teams at 10 & 11 and 3-3 Arizona at 19

Oct 22, 2012, 8:34 AM

removes any credibility from these rankings

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you think SOS should be a smaller component?

Oct 22, 2012, 8:35 AM

I've thought about that. But then most people get on me because teams that have played "nobody" are near the top. So I don't really know what people think is "credible" at this point.

I'm not looking for credibility, though. Just posting for fun.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Shouldn't SOS only help you if you actually win those games?

Oct 22, 2012, 8:37 AM

Anyone can lose to a bunch of good teams and beat their chest over SOS. South Carolina has been doing it for years

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Interesting theory...never thought about that.

Oct 22, 2012, 8:38 AM

Every system I know incorporates the strength of all opponents.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

SOS losses should work in your favor at times

Oct 22, 2012, 10:47 AM [ in reply to Shouldn't SOS only help you if you actually win those games? ]

but only in relation to the teams on your level (i.e. if Oregon's only loss is to Southern Cal but Florida loses to Missouri, the loss should assist Oregon more than Florida).

But generally, I agree with you. South Carolina's 2 losses shouldn't be providing a boost over a team like Southern Cal just because their two losses were to high-quality opponents - which is seemingly the case in Prodigal's rankings.

Western Kentucky gets a huge boost by loosing to Alabama

Did Clemson not play Sat.? You have them at 5-1 when we are 6-1. Am I missing something somewhere?

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ken

They are 5-1 against FBS teams.

Oct 22, 2012, 8:40 AM

All records shown are against FBS opponents only.

I certainly don't think you should.

Oct 22, 2012, 8:48 AM

But some people like it. More importantly, I like it. So I'll keep posting it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So it's really a ranking that you come up with yourself?...

Oct 22, 2012, 2:31 PM

serially?

figuring out an html table.

however, your ratings are hideous.

Srs question

Oct 22, 2012, 10:51 AM

Is your poll designed to be like the BCS in that it appears 'incomplete' until the final week, or is it designed to accurately reflect college football as it stands here in Week 9?

2010_donor_pickem.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My formula would be just as "incomplete" as the BCS

Oct 22, 2012, 11:16 AM

Or any other mathematical formula, in that there's still input to be made (5 weeks of football games).

But I think my formula, as well as the BCS, is designed to accurately reflect the team performances thus far.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Okay, I'll elaborate

Oct 22, 2012, 11:40 AM

Is your poll designed to say, "Texas Tech has displayed the 7th best performance up to Week 9," or is it designed to say, "Texas Tech is the 7th best team in football?"

Or more simply, is your poll a reflection of what has occurred, or a prediction of how the teams will be ranked at the end of the season?

Your previous response seems to indicate the former. I'm just curious what the foundation is for the poll.

2010_donor_pickem.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes. Only a reflection of what has happened.

Oct 22, 2012, 11:49 AM

Has nothing to do with the future.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you think it could play a roll in yours?

Oct 22, 2012, 11:58 AM

To some AP voters and publications, the whole point of each week's poll is to try to be as accurate as possible to the final poll. Athlon basically gauges the success of its pre-season poll by comparing it to the final BCS poll.

Certainly there are countless methods and reasons for filling out a ballot. I understand you're not filling out a ballot, so your objective is probably far different than that of an actual pollster. I just wonder if you put any stock to that idea seeing as you've clearly put a lot of thought into making this poll.
