Why is Clemson's DE and LB depth so thin ?

Only 5 players listed on the 3 deep at LB ??
Peter Woods doesn't have the speed or agility (he's 315 lbs) to provide effective pass rush from the DE position.
What happened ?

Nope. The coaches declined Dabo's offer to find someone in the portal and said they were happy with the players on the roster. Was mentioned in an interview late in the offseason.

^^^ correct answer ^^^ However, I interpreted the interview as Dabo saying he was fine with the guys he had. Don't remember anything about the position coaches.

Dabo has said a couple times in interviews/press conference that he asks his position coaches if they want to pursue the portal. Coach Luke apparently accepted that offer and went after some players only to strikeout. Now other coaches may have wanted to go into the portal but knew it would likely be a waste of effort given the players the are looking for big money and/or promise of playing time.

Recruiting fell off a cliff for those spots when BV left. The guys we have now are the "left overs" from those first few classes.
Just a massive talent gap from what BV was working with.

Hopefully we don't lose any recruits due to these storms. These storms can't destroy fertile recruiting grounds.

I mean we dismissed TJ Dudley for lude acts. He would have went a long way with depth. But if he was doing what everyone was reporting he had to go. And some of the younger guys just haven’t developed yet. Anderson and Crayton will turn out fine. Let’s hope CJ is a diamond in the rough.

Said he was exposing himself to his teammates. Said the teammates, brought the issue to Dabo and they all wanted him gone.

Sorry Colt I was a little off. He wasn’t exposing himself. He was taking photos of other players while they were changing and selling them on only fans. Players didn’t know he was doing this. They were obviously mad when they found out.

Here's why....

|
1) Recruiting misses. Yes, we , like everyone else, don't hit on everyone. 2) Roster Management.
Yes, Woods should not be at DE--but he is needed there due to lack of quality depth.
Help is on the way tho.....

Kid from Virginia reminds me of Ricky Sapp athletically. Might be the most "twitchy" DE Clemson has had in years(and I know XT was just here)

Big thing with what you are asking is:
1. There are only so many elite body types who are DE(defensive ends). This particular position is very hard to find in terms of elite out of H.S. K.J. Henry was the 10th highest graded recruit ever here at Clemson and he had to Redshirt for example. I think Jaheim Lawson is going to end up being yet another in the long line of 3-star players who make the NFL and have long careers. TJ Parker at his current pace is a next level player. Hoffler and the kid we just signed are from the DMV area have potential.
2. Can't agree with you at LB. Jamal Anderson was a 4-Star player. Sammy Brown a 5-star player. B. Carter was a 5-star. Dee Crayton was a high 3-star. I would also give you this: Kendall Joseph and Isiah Simmons and Baylon Spector and James Skalski were all 3-star players. They all ended up being all-conference type players or going on to play in the NFL. Shaq Smith - 5-star player at LB. Tony Steward 5-star LB. Flopped out and never made an impact(Steward did a bit his last year).
How did Vandy beat a team full of 5-star players?

It's just recruiting misses or guys are young and aren't ready. If we had super stars on our 2-deep like in years past, it wouldn't be too much of an issue. They're learning though and will grow into really good players. Plus we will have help coming in next year's class hopefully.

As you have seen at QB - With the portal, it's impossible to have 3-deep at every position anymore.
We used to have a 4/5star QB in every class sitting on the bench. That's just not possible in today's game. There are bound to be weak spots within rosters.
Last few years for us, it was WR and QB. Now it's DE and LB.

Woods probably lost some of that weight. He came in at 293. Wouldn't be surprised if he's more around 300 now. Lawson and Hoffler will come along, they are getting the PT needed, Denhoff has held his own as well

Please take a read!
Defensive Ends are hard to come by. There aren't a lot of Myles Murphy's out there or Clelin Ferrell's. Or Jadaveon Clowney's.
The best defensive end in college football came from fellow ACC school - Georgia Tech. He spent 4 years there "Developing"!
Or maybe, since he's in the sorry excuse conference now, he's finally able to make plays versus weaker competition( of course i'm kidding ).
But, the point is, that is a hard position to get right! Did Myles Murphy ever really live up to his potential? I didn't think so. In fact, his last year, I thought he was playing rather timid as to not get hurt at times.
XT, highly rated DE. Injuries hurt him otherwise, I think he would have been "that guy"! KJ Henry - 5-star who had to redshirt.
Again, I think linebacker has proven to be one of those spots we have had great success with over the years! Currently have 3-star players: Spector, Muse, Simmons. I am not including Trotter and Simpson as they were highly rated players. In short, I like our talent and depth at LB 100%.
It's a hard position to get right and to get immediate impact fresh out of H.S. Give these kids to develop and I think Clemson is going to be good. Particularly speaking about Lawson and Hoffler. https://247sports.com/player/kyle-kennard-46056592/#:~:text=Kyle%20Kennard%20is%20a%20Defensive%20End%20from%20Atlanta,%20GA.%20Timeline. https://www.yardbarker.com/college_football/articles/kyle_kennard_the_best_de_in_college_football_and_the_anchor_of_the_gamecocks_elite_d_line/s1_17406_40940458#:~:text=The%20Georgia%20Tech%20transfer%20has%20emerged%20as%20the%20best%20defensive

we're playing a Nickel instead of a SAM. Have been all year with Woodaz moving to MIKE. We're redshirting 3 I believe.
DE depth is improving fast with emergence of Lawson and return of Woods

changes or our opponents are running different Offenses, don’t expect some mad rush in scholly #s to got to LBs.
DEs - Woods was fine at DE prior to injury. Looks like he put on weight in the downtime and obviously his knee isn’t going to be 100% first game back. Lawson coming on is a welcome bonus. We’ve been as thin at this at DT before after our title runs. Not concerned unless we have additional injuries but we do need to add some more guys this offseason. We lost one of our future players and emergency depth guys for this year during the spring after just a few months on campus.

Since Clemson only plays 2 LBs at a time, it’s not surprising that we only have 5 in the two deep.
DE depth is easy to understand. We lost 2 seniors and 2 transfers, while only replacing them with one freshman + zero transfers. Also, I just be crazy, but Woods looked dominant against Georgia. Arguably our best player on defense in that game. Christian Wilkins was an All-American at DE. Woods could have done the same if he didn’t get hurt.
