New Story: Tigers prepare for Wake, Swinney says sometimes you need "a little pain"

Tigers prepare for Wake, Swinney says sometimes you need "a little pain"

It was a disgruntled and unhappy football team that took to the practice field Monday evening, and not all the smoke that gathered around the practice fields came from nearby wild fires. The players were fuming, according to head coach Dabo Swinney, who said that last Saturday’s 43-42 loss to Pitt had the expected effect on his team.

Why wouldn't we win division??

Nov 15, 2016, 12:34 PM

We've beaten both FSU and Louisville

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We'd have 2 ACC losses (we won't we'll beat Wake)

Nov 15, 2016, 12:39 PM

But if we do lose, we'd have 2 ACC losses and Lou would have only 1.

We are currently in second place in the Atlantic

Nov 15, 2016, 1:08 PM [ in reply to Why wouldn't we win division?? ]

We have to win our last game in order to tie for the Atlantic Division Championship with UL.

He's right

UL is 7-1 in the ACC right now.
We are 6-1 in the ACC right now.

We have to win Saturday to tie them for the division. We will be division co-champs at that point.
We get the nod due to first tie-breaker (head to head).

Re: He's right

Nov 15, 2016, 1:34 PM

No we will win division. We beat Louisville.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not exactly

Nov 15, 2016, 1:41 PM

We will be division co-champs with Louisville, and we will represent the division in the ACC championship game based on the first tie breaker.

But we will be co-champs.

Just like we were co-champs in 2012 with FSU (both at 7-1) in 2012 and they represented the division based on head-to-head.

I don't understand...if we win Sat. then we will be co division winners..right...but because we beat UL then we would win the tie breaker...right...but we will not be co-champions of the ACC if we beat the coastal team...right. We would win the ACC outright...please help me understand this. I'm getting conflicting information.

Correct Atlantic co-champions and ACC champions outright.

We will be co-champs of the divsision, with the nod to play in the ACCCG for the head to head. If we win the ACCCG, we are the ACC champions.

If we tie with UL then the tie breaker goes to Clemson since we beat UL...am I right?

Not really. It can lead to a false feeling that everything will work out in the end. It did for several weeks and nearly did again. The team just expected to win and haven't played with the edge they had last year yet. They've just out athlete most teams and got bit by Pitt (and some bad penalties) out scheming us.

If we don't play like we should Wake will beat us too***

No Pain Necessary

Nov 15, 2016, 2:15 PM

You don't need any pain--just make the right play calls and you'll win ( ask Nick Saban--he does it every week/every year!). The players should be pissed, not at themselves, but at a defensive coach who didn't have them prepared to hold Pitt under 40 points, and at an offensive coach who doesn't know when to run the ball and when to pass it! They are the ones making big $$$, and they need to earn it!!!

Re: No Pain Necessary

Brent Venables has been extolled to the heavens on this site for several years now, but his defense was taken to the shed on Saturday. A real beat down. And the play calling at the end? Can't get one yard after Clemson got about a million in the previous fifty nine minutes? Honestly don't get it. Seems like a pass play would have been in order, considering DW4 completed fifty two up to that point and the run game had been absolutely invisible all day. This is planet earth calling the O-Line!!!! Block that bod. Block that bod.

Re: No Pain Necessary

Nov 15, 2016, 3:57 PM

I am going to say this...I could not play like they did for 60 min's. Our defense got the same kind of treatment from them that we have been been giving to other teams for the past few years. Hurry up offense. It wears at the body when those guys did not get any rest in the second half.

The game is over with...go Tigers!!! Get it done against Wake...Go Tigers!!!!!!!~~

Nov 15, 2016, 4:04 PM

I am very disappointed in the way we are all reacting...including myself...this team has not lost but 2 games out of how many????? We need to get it on and continue to support this team...the ACC is what we need right now and I hope these guys is going to shake it off and get it done. We all know UL will be pulling for Wake so we need to put that game behind us and look to our future. We need the vibes to be right for this team...let them know we are true Tiger fans and not just a bunch of fair weather fans. Go Tigers...look forward to the game...go out Tigers with the intensity I know you guys have. Get it done Tigers!!!! BE the team with BELIEVING AND EXECUTING.

I hope coaches R grading their playcalling & lack of adjust

Nov 16, 2016, 10:28 PM

lack of adjustments. We got out coached before and during the game.

If they were lining up 8 in the box all day long, we should have been passing all day long --- even more than we did.

The JUMBO package should always work, if we draw it up properly. A toss sweep on must have Jumbo play is troublesome.

We aren't we exploiting weaknesses on other teams? Pitt clearly did that to us.

Clearly our players made some mistakes. They are 19 & 20 year old kids. That's going to happen. We need coaches to play calls that make the players (and the team) successful.

I'm very shocked that Coach V didn't adjust for the shuttle pass during the game. AND I am still waiting for Coach V to teach ALL of our DBs to look for the ball and not get called for PI.

With all the turnovers in the redzone, perhaps some of it can be blamed on play calling?

I could be all wrong. BUT I do hope coaches are assessing these issues and their weaknesses and opportunities to improve.
