Waited a while to post this but our program is in jeopardy

of falling off the pedestal that it was on. This started before CBV and CTE left. It needs to be fixed.
Complacency is a natural thing, right? If it ain't broke don't fix it, right? It's broken. We lost a couple of high-quality recruits to UNC who have done nothing in 30 years. We get those guys two years ago.
Our offense falls to near the bottom out of nearly 130 teams in one year. The portal in is free for all with nearly a dozen scholarship players leaving in two years.
Lots of other programs lose OC and DCs without this kind of mass exodus that we see now with our recruits.
There are no smiles with a serious fan base who see the issues. To ignore it all is to be stupid. To trust a guy who has built this juggernaut is wise, but we are on a cliff. See it or not but it's there.
I will leave you guys with this...Dabo says that experience is the best teacher and success is the worst teacher. I agree with him on the second part.
Experience doesn't help the best poker players in the world. The best ones are always the young folk.
I am not a pumper and not a sky is falling type of guy but this football team is at a crossroads. I am excited to see what happens next. Good or bad, I cheer my Tigers as I have for 40+ years.
Go Tigers!!

Actually, we will gain be the loses. Part of the problem has been the lack of full buy-in by some players - thought they were too good to get better. Dabo is right, in that, we will rebuild with new players that will be hungry and a staff that is hungry.

Let's see how Dabo adjusts with the scholarship numbers. We're not losing any more transfers than anyone else. There are 2100 guys in the portal.
As for complacency, I didn't see it this year. I saw a staff and team fight the whole season. What I did see was a huge dropoff at QB. That gets fixed, everything is fine again

O line has been a deficiency for years

and we have done VERY little to change it. Now that it has become blatantly obvious to anyone, we decide to do something. The lack of OL development has lost 2 championship ops for Clemson.
The avg recruiting and lack of development lasted way too long. Dabo is responsible for that.
There is no way to justify the lack of OL development.

Coaching, player development and recruiting. More of the same assistants = more of the same results. Our offense did not just take a step back, the passing game was non-existent and one of the worst in CFB.

Ugh… when you play in a National Championship you do realize that you were better than every team but 1? Of you lose in the play off your better than every team but 2 or 3. Maybe even 1. So you can’t say that anything was broken or not developed! But last year it was the defense who could not stop OSU not the offensive line! It was the defense he could not stop LSU not the offensive line…

Did you watch DJ this year?
Dec 11, 2021, 10:14 PM
[ in reply to alright, I will play ] |

The drop off was catastrophic. We could hardly complete a pass half the sesson.
Now, I'm not one who has written DJ off completely. Some guys take longer to develop. Jones and Burrow were mediocre until their senior years. But I'm elated we have a 5 star QB coming in next semester for the spring for a real competition, something we didnt have this year.
Whoever it is, if QB steps up our offense hums again. QB is the key to our offense. If DJ had been just average this year we're likely in the playoffs in spite of all the injuries. Not winning them, but in them, like the KB year

And why didn’t we have a capable backup to relieve him?
Everyone seems to act like the coaches are victims here. Shouldn’t they be held responsible for these failures at QB this year? (And the OL, and the WR, etc.)

a big miss in recruiting. Maybe he develops, but if he doesn't, he was a big miss.
Why was his back up not better? Who is coming in to sit behind a preseason Heisman favorite. Deshsun's back up for 2 years was Nick Schussler. TL's was Brice, who bombed at Duke and had to drop down to the Sunbelt to find success.
At the level we're looking to play at QB is basically everything. Your top guy flames out or gets hurt, not many are going to have close to that available on the bench. OU did this year. Who else?

on paper he has DJ's resume. In reality we have no idea how good he is. Who is Bama's backup? Is he a highly rated recruit or has he proven anything?
Recruiting is part of coaching, so if we missed on DJ I'll give you that. But DJ not being good this year os because he wasn't good, not development or coaching.
Same QB coach had Kelly Bryant get us to the playoffs.

The current reality is very few highly recruited
Dec 11, 2021, 11:20 PM
|
|
players are going to come in and sit behind someone. This is especially true at QB. A team may sign a couple of guys, but they almost certainly only keep 1.
The exception would possibly be a guy like Klubnick for us now. He committed prior to the season. Prior to the season most thought DJ would be drafted after next season. Hey, maybe he transforms ?? but Klubnick was realistically looking at 1 year as the back up playing a lot. His timeline is obviously wide open to accelerating at this point.

On the the QB back up. No body is going to sit behind him when he has a minimum of two maybe 3 years left. The only reason OU had their guy was because Rattler was supposed to have a big season and move on to the NFL. That’s why they recruit in cycles. 1 star, 1 guy the next year that they think will stay on the team on the bench. In theory if DJ lives up to his recruiting Klubnik comes in and sits a a year next season and starts the 2 after that and so on. So it was no lack of recruiting it’s the fact that like you said right now DJ seems to be one of the biggest recruiting flops we’ve seen and no one can predict that and no coaching can cause that.

and so much worse in his 12 starts this year.
He was really good in high school against good competition. I have to believe his performance this year was less about a recruiting miss by virtually every coach and recruiting expert, and more about a young man who felt the pressure of being the starter at a big time program in a new era of NIL. If the rumors about his parents getting divorced are true, that surely played a role this year as well.

Held responsible? How precisely should our 2-time national champion visionary head coach be held responsible?
If you simply mean he can help responsible by allowing message board folks to post know-it-all, snarky and outrageous overreactions, then ok sure. Have at it.
But if it means anything else, that would be absurd.

even right up to the start of the season, because I think they clearly weren't expecting him to be among the worst in the country, OR something else that we don't know about has been going on with DJ all year. It's obvious to me that DJ himself, independent of WRs and the OL, was significantly worse this year than last year.

just to late to do anything about it. I remember all through camp coaches never talked of DJ's excelling. Heard a lot about Taylor, but not DJ. Most of us likely chalked it up to him going against our defense, then the reality became visible.
They maybe even knew after the spring. But to my previous point, who is coming in to play behind a top 5 Heisman candidate according to all the media? Are you believing a coach that tells you don't believe what ESPN says, he's really not that good

The drop of was catastrophic but there were MANY other factors, other than DJ, that caused our offense to look as bad as it did for most of the season - we did well the last two games. Here are some of the reasons:
1. A number of injuries in the offensive line forced us to play players who were not ready 2. The replacements on the offensive line are talented, and it showed towards the end of the season, but it took them a while to gel 3. There were just too many injuries to key wide receivers and there was no continuity there either 4. The best running backs are freshmen and sophomores and it took them a while to gel
DJ needs to improve - no doubt - but it was not all on him. The bottom line is that we had an uncommonly large number of injuries to the few key experienced people we had on offense. Let's see how we do in the bowl game.

Yes, it hurts a lot. DJ had a bad year, the line had a bad year but showed some improvement at the end. DJ had to hit the open receiver. Just my opinion. What do I know thought, I don't make millions of dollars a year.

It's no where near as bad people say it is. Defense is still loaded with talent to be a top 5 defense next year. Offense is filled with freshman and sophomores. Our issue is QB and WR. Cade is coming and we have 2 of the best WR in the nation coming in. We are hitting on all our immediate needs.

Every good business or enterprise has to reinvent itself. That is just part of life. If we lost the head coach then the rebuilding hurdles would be large. But in this case, these are just opportunities for younger hungrier coaches to join the Dabo family. It was a matter of time before Coach Elliott and Coach Venables moved on -- ironically it might be a blessing in disguise that this happened in a year where we missed the ACC championship game and the CFP. We should be thankful that those two coaches and the AD invested over 3 decades combined of their lives at Clemson -- not many schools can boast that.
As far as recruits moving on -- well I wish them luck. I think they are always reminded -- you pick the school and not the coach you play for: the coaches will come and ago. With the transfer portal in place, it might be wiser for incoming players to take a wait-and-see approach -- but these are 17 and 18-year olds and at that age sometimes prone to irrational decision making.
I kind of look forward to see what the new regime looks like. We wanted a different offense. Now we'll get one. We'll probably even get a better defensive coach. We'll get new pipelines to recruit and we'll get new blood in our athletic department.
Because that is the way you get better. IMHO.

I was there during Danny and the reason the program died then was the school administration. They essentially killed Clemson athletics. We have a different board and President now and the economic universe has archanged .
The thing I do see coming out of this winter of discontent is we are going to have to shell out 5-10 million more per year to stay in this arms race.

Its strange that these portal jumpers and decommittments say nothing about education and the school. Its like a love sick younster following his girlfriend off the college. All of them twit "after a long confervation with family" , I decided to transer or decommitt. Any coach can be replaced, remember Ohio State crushed Coach V. defence with that hurry up offence. I hope the transfers are not given any breaks when it comes to grades. Reminds me of a church member putting the pastor up on a pedestal and missing the point.

I think that's just part of college sports nowadays. Everybody wants to play. Everybody can't start. Just basic math. We should get used to it. That's why I don't mind see 3-star and 2-star players being recruited. We want every kid to to start. But we also want every kid to accept their role. As long as the coaches are fair and honest with all.

The de-commits are due to shenanigans at IMG. the transfers were all players who were not going to play anyway. To use terms like "Mass Exodus" is totally over-reaction.

People who want to cite success in previous seasons and deny these issues are living in denial.
I wonder what they will say this time next year when we have likely missed the playoffs again?

I see you offer no solution that we fans can make work. Ours is to either loyally stand behind the powers that be, or become critical, miserable complainers, powerless to reroute the train. I’m just along for the ride - up the mountain, down the cliffs. Just a passenger who has to trust the engineer. Enjoy the ride.

Crossroads? That's where Tommy Johnson sold his soul to the devil at midnight.
All he learned was how to play the guitar real good.
Dabo is still "affiliated" and I believe Coach will pick the right road while seeking the treasure.

Exactly. College football in general is a mess. People are running in all directions with no one knowing where those roads lead. It's in great need of competent leadership and regulations.

Our program is in greater jeopardy for things that are way out of Dabos control. Clemson’s location and relatively small alumni base puts us way behind in the world of NIL. Even if some much needed regulation happens.
What is going on at Texas and Miami will push for some regulation sooner rather than later possibly.
Even with some rules, they could be some legit teams with advantages. If Bruton Smith or Rick Hendrick, who own dealerships all over the country, want to give 30 blue chippers NIL deals to make car ads close to their hometown they could. Those are the kind of games Clemson is going to have to play potentially.

Was that an attack? Are you everyone? I just pointed out that you most certainly did not wait awhile to post your negative feelings about the program. That assertion (waiting awhile) implies that this is some carefully measured, contemplative post. But it’s really just the same stuff you’ve been posting over and over. You’re entitled to your opinion even when it’s silly and fails to hold up under any scrutiny. Dabo isn’t going anywhere. The head coach of major college football program should not be dictated to by the fanbase. The fanbase has a large say in when it is time for a coach to move on but should have no say in how they actually run the program. So what is your intent? Because all I see is a guy undermining the most successful coach we’ve ever known.

I hope this post doesn't make it to Twitter for all those haters to feed off it. Coots are spreading rumors everywhere. I even saw a Bama fan telling them that Clemson would be OK. And, someone from another school telling Clemson fans to stop letting people from lesser programs get to us. Let's stop and take a deep breath. Please.

While I may seem to be an optimist in the middle of alot of negativism I believe all of this will make Clemson stronger. All of these things: injuries, loseing players and coaches were bound to happen sooner or later. Just came at once. Teams that have these things come a little at a time never seem to get above it. I believe we have Coach that is quite up to the challenge and will get it done and do it right. These players that drooped their commitments will have regrets down the line. The Tigers will be back stronger than ever. BELIEVE IT!
