I hope Dabo listened closely to Heupel's words today about

Hendon Hooker, his portal transfer QB.
“You look at Hendon’s career and the ups and downs that he went through, it’s a great lesson for everybody in the sport and in life, the ability to handle that and to come out on the other side. He’s so confident and comfortable in who he is. That’s why his college football journey took the path that it did and ultimately became one of the best players in college football and helped change our program. Because of those things, after the setback of being injured, which is devastating — all the work you put into it, the things we had an opportunity to accomplish as a football team — it’s devastating.
"That next day was really hard for him. A lot of tears. I know you ask the question why when you’re in that situation, but because of his faith was able to come out on the other side of it. He’s out on the practice field with us that week. You could still feel his energy. Just because he wasn’t playing didn’t mean he wasn’t still the same leader inside of our program. He’s got an unbelievable future ahead of him. This is a small bump in his journey. I know he’s going to be tremendously successful once he gets to the next chapter in the NFL. He’s got to go through a rehab process but he’s going to handle it the right way and I know that because of what he’s done his entire life. His impact has been felt inside of our program while he was healthy, while he’s been injured and he’ll be a part of our program forever.”
Use it!

Do you hope that Dabo is sitting around reading press interviews of other coaches? That seems like a ridiculous way to waste his very expensive time. It would also seem to suggest that you think there is some deep meaning buried in those quotes that Dabo wouldn’t already intrinsically understand - which is pretty demeaning to Dabo since there is absolutely nothing deep or profound in those comments.

He doesn't use the portal and the reason given by those on Tigernet is we don't want to "destroy our culture" or get a "locker room cancer" or "kid's all about NIL" etc. If these things are true then I absolutely hope he listened to the man sitting beside him today. The guy he got out of the portal left a mark on his program.

you used that actually came from Dabo? This post makes it sound like he actually made statements like that himself. Those statements don't sound like him, but maybe I'm wrong.

Touché. So you (both) believe Heupel approaches his job with a profundity that Dabo lacks and should try to imitate?

When I hear anyone say “so and so” should really listen closely to “so and so” I would usually infer that deference is being given to the latter. I have no reason to believe Dabo is in need of edification from Heupel. I’m quite sure Dabo is well aware that the right person taken to the right place via the portal can be quite impactful. So I guess, referring back to your op, I don’t think it would matter one iota whether Dabo listened closely to Heupel’s thoughts on the portal.

in general. Instead I said I hoped he listened to something specific.
You're so caught up in your mission to exonerate Dabo of any and all mishaps that you assume any and every comment of criticism is rooted in not liking him or wanting someone else over him.
Read posts for what they say.

I’d say that allegation is more out context and frankly incorrect than my original reply. I’m not out to exonerate anything. It’s tedious watching this board fill daily with nothing but effort to tear down our coach and program. You don’t have to think he’s perfect to think the constant, redundant criticism is unnecessary. That you and I have little to no prior engagement and you jump to “ exonerate Dabo of any and all mishaps” suggests that you do have an agenda beyond simple thoughts on the portal.

when it comes to Dabo's stubborness on some things.
The fact that you took a post about the portal and tried turning it into an all out assault on Dabo as a coach lends to the idea that you get up arms at any criticism.

It wasn’t. My comment was about my qualification relative to the members of this board I was debating - not a college basketball coach. Unfortunately, explaining why you can’t grasp that distinction could be perceived as a violation of this board’s rules on personal attacks.
And why are you still responding to me if you have me on ignore? That is weak AF.

Yup, UTenn has won more Fulmer Cup Awards than any other school. UTenn needed a QB because their QB room sucked. Other schools making use of the portal include Miami, Coots and Louisville. So you think we should model our program after these schools?

You will know if they are “back” next year when they win the east and are able to replace hooker at qb.

To play devils advocate here, Dabo has won just as many national championships as Heupel has since the first transfer portal class walked into the field.
My point here is……..this is a terrible argument.

What I mean by that is, I don't think Dabo is going to completely re-evaluate his position on the portal based upon a 30-second soundbite from an opposing coach.
I really don't.

Dabo has said if he needs to use the portal and sees a good fit then he will. Not much more needs to be said about it. Nothing we say here is going to change it. It’s been mentioned several times why he is reluctant to do so and they are reasons that make a lot of sense to me. Not that it matters much.

Surprise, surprise Hueple took a Tennessee team that has been a dumpster fire for 20 years with no players that could start for Clemson, and improved it by bringing in players from the portal that were upgrades.
Dabo has built a championship caliber roster by recruiting top 10 classes for a decade, and doesn't want to take a chance on wrecking it by possibly bringing a problem into the locker room. No starters have left Clemson, only backups that got passed on the depth chart. His vetted 4 star high school recruits will come in and provide depth without drama. Some will move up, and become starters, and some will bust, and move on, and it will repeat again next year.
Currently there are only 3 open scholarships after the current class signs, unless more underclassmen transfer or declare for the draft. Dabo may look for transfers for those spots if he can find the right fits. He may try to add some late bloomers to the recruiting class as he has in the past. He may just put walk-ons that have already shown the ability to compete for playing time on scholarship. Any of these are acceptable with the right players, and all could be busts with the wrong players.
I just don't understand all the sky is falling angst about the portal. We don't have any real holes in the roster that have not already been addressed. Yes we could use another contributor in a few places, but we'll be fine if we don't. Definitely nothing warranting all the hand wringing. If we start losing starters or entire position groups, then he will have to change, but right now he is better off not trying to fix what isn't broken.

Dabo at one point lived in his car while in college. That’s pretty tough sledding. If ever there was a “never give up” guy, it’s Dabo. I don’t know Hendon’s story, but I do know that “injured star QB” is not a tougher story than “walk-on living in his car”.

Actually this sounds very much like something Dabo would say himself and maybe has said something very similar in regards to a Mike Williams or Justin Ross or Xavier Thomas. Seems to be more about handling adversity than a statement about the portal.

I re-read the post and I didn’t see any advice given to Dabo, just a good story about a player’s perseverance. Did I miss something? signed Dabo cultist.

What is your point. Dabo is a better coach and person.

The point is good men can come out of the portal impact your program in a positive way.
Not who’s a better coach because that’s just a silly comparison.

You do realize that HH did not start straight out of the portal? He was 2nd string behind milton and went in when Milton got hurt. And then led UT to a 6-5 record. Funny the UT coach didn’t start him from the get go when he was clearly the best QB in the room. Sound familiar?

When did this become about who is a better qb?
This is about reaching into the portal for quality players with character to fill needs. Not all portal players land a starting job.

My point was not if a Qb better. The example chosen was Hendon Hooker. He did not immediately improve TN roster like everyone on this thread seems to believe. He was 6-5 his first year, Tnet would be in full blown meltdown if we went 6-5.

If we had a losing season prior I doubt tigernet would be in meltdown mode.
He made an immediate impact in that qb room whether he was named the starter from the jump or not. I don’t think it’s coincidence that DJ was our first qb since Will Proctor that didn’t go through a true QB competition and both are our worst QBs in over 20 years.

It flies in the face of what most on here parrot as the reason for Dabo’s lack of portal use.

Get back to us when Heupel’s won 2 Nattys and build a decade long power house program with one of the best graduation rates in the country year in and year out. Don’t think Dabo needs instruction on how to coach players through adversity. Just look at how he’s supported the Bresse family this year. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make.

What is he supposed to get out of pretty standard coach speak?
