no Clemson fan I know would EVER even remotely consider trading BV for Steele.

I remember when Steele brought data to a presser - think after a loss to the chickens - claiming that if you took out the QB scramble yards we had good rushing defense numbers !!! lol lol -<img border=">

Just tell me how much more I need to give to iptay. I think just bite the bullet and give the man 3 mil and a lifetime contract,

I would bet the house no one else would have sniffed the job CBV did this year with what he had to work with. Already got my 5 ft tall bag of popcorn just waiting to see what he does this season. Gonna be epic!!!!!

Yes - it is !! He definitely is the best at using what he has ... and was limited this year by what he had on the Dline.. Next year he will have some real studs on the Dline .. and - you’re right - get that popcorn ready ... gonna be fun !! -<img border=">

Exactly, Kevin Steele always had excuses to why his D didn't get the job done, and none of it was ever his fault!!!!!

Dallas giving Dak Prescott such a large contract. Is he deserving of that amount? Absolutely not. But, when you have someone that is serviceable and don’t know how to find anyone to replace them, just give him the money so you don’t have to worry about losing him to someone else and then scrambling for a replacement. Just a lazy move in general.

Defensive coordinator cost per victory (2019, excluding bonuses):
Venables: 157,142.857
Steele: 211,111.11

I think we're getting our money's worth

They must, and with it they have a lack of common sense, and the sense worth bc IMO, Kevin Steele isn't worth half the salary that Brent Venable is being paid at Clemson!!! The board of trustees at Aubarn really dropped the ball when they approved Steels salary!!!!

I don't know how much BV is worth in money, but, I think he is worth whatever it would take to keep him happy at Clemson, and his job at Clemson has to be worth something other than money to BV, and I'm sure that it is... Do it mean that the board of trustees at Aubarn are stupid for over paying their DC, I think so!!!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We don't need to be unnecessarily raising BV's pay . . .

Jan 24, 2020, 1:46 PM

We need to save that money so that we can dish out the increase offers for when his son is no longer in school here - and the option to leave might be more viable.

Re: TNET: Former Clemson DC now nation's top-paid coordinator, Venables at No. 2

Jan 24, 2020, 2:18 PM

Clemson fans are brutal on former coaches, something I’ve never understood and don’t like. Steele is highly respected coordinator and no the joke isn’t on Auburn he has been there since 2016 and they know exactly what they have.

Would I trade for BV? No. But all because of one terrible game there is this revisionist history that he was a terrible DC. BV has the luxury of a much higher talent level as Swinney has built Clemson up, and to be fair Steele has high talent at Auburn. But we had a talent issue in 2011 on that side of the ball, he had good defenses in 2009 and 2010. And for the record, a fact nobody can refute, the BV coaches 2012 defense was ranked similar to the 2011 Steele Defense. Things turned around when the talent was stocked back up in 2013 and we never looked back. 2014 was amazing one of the best defenses in Clemson history under BV.

It’s a pointless argument because nobody wants to hear it they just want to trash the man. It’s disgusting.

Jan 24, 2020, 3:26 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Former Clemson DC now nation's top-paid coordinator, Venables at No. 2 ]

I still believe he's too smart for his own good. His defenses are pretty complex, and unless he has experienced players (particularly LBs) that have been in his system for a few years, they often struggle to fully grasp the concepts and reads.

He had a pretty upperclassman heavy defense this year with a very talented DL. That resulted in a pretty solid defense overall. I feel like he lacks the ability to simplify things when necessary which will likely result in a dropoff next year, when he loses a bunch of his experienced players, but we'll see.

I don't hold anything against him (other than that 1 game), and I used to enjoy watching his defenses. I'm definitely happy that game lead to hiring BV, and I wouldn't trade him for anyone in the country.

AU defense was excellent this year with 2 great DL who could provide pressure w/o blitz. They will be gone in the First Round.

Steele was LSU DC one year, didn't impress.

1) D coordinator bears responsibility for recruiting deficiencies too.

2) When the D quit on Steele in that game (and it was obvious they quit), that is all you needed to know about Steele.

Sure, he is an above average D coach, but he is nowhere close to a BV.

Venables soon to beat No. 3

Jan 25, 2020, 3:08 AM

LSU in negotiations with Bo Pelini for DC. Stuck on pay. He asks to be #1.

Bo is a better DC than Aranda, is particularly strong with his innovations vs RPO.

When LSU won NC in '07, Bo was carried off the field while Les Miles walked.
In 7 yrs as HC of Neb his teams won 9 or more every year, better than coaches before and after him.

If not Bo, a NFL guy is probable.

You can pay the guy more than Dabo. You still aren't going to get a better DC than Venables.

Venables gave up 575 yds/game vs Top Ten opponents. That is the relevant comparison.

Well, maybe not, Ven don't face that kind of competition in the season. His stats look great vs the inept.

BV would never seek the self-aggrandizement of demanding to be #1 in pay. As if the size of the paycheck is a real measure of the value of a man or an employee.

Good luck with that. Think of how many times you see someone demanding the huge paycheck then squatting on it.
