Update on my son

Mar 31, 2020, 3:04 PM

First I would like to thank each and every one of you who lifted my son up in your prayers. I truly believe in the power of prayer and they were felt by my wife and I throughout the process of trying to help our son.

I would also like to thank each of you who left a comment to either lift our spirits, give some calming words, or to give some advice from experience.

I apologize for not returning with updates sooner. The Clemson family has some truly amazing people and returning today to see that many people had returned to my original post and continued to offer their prayers and keep my family in their thoughts was an overwhelming feeling.

I am extremely happy and relieved to let everyone know that my son is doing well. About the only lasting effects at this point are a slight cough and that he is still a little more tired than normal, but both of those things seem to be improving on a daily basis.

The whole story: It's TL;DR but hopefully is helpful to somebody else in the future because not knowing is the worst.

My son is 9 months old and living through his first spring. He has had a runny nose and cough since early March. It was pretty minor for the most part and it did not seem to effect his mood or energy. A couple of weeks ago we took him to the doctor because a little girl at his daycare tested positive for flu with the same symptoms as him. His doctor said he had some seasonal allergies (not a shock because pollen hammers me each spring) that were causing his symptoms and gave us some allergy medicine. We did a few days of allergy medicine that seemed to have absolutely no effect on his symptoms and so we stopped because my wife and I don't like to give medicine just for the sake of giving it.

Fast forward to last Monday. Early in the day my son felt warm, and my wife checked his temperature to find he had a low grade fever. He typically gets a fever when teeth come in and we gave him a little Motrin and hoped that was the case. For the remainder of the day he kept a low grade fever and we continued with the Motrin. Tuesday brought more of the same but with an increase in the temperature of his fever, but still nothing crazy. A couple of cool baths and Motrin would get him back near a normal temperature and then it would rise again a little while before the next dose of Motrin was possible. We told ourselves if he had a fever overnight we would go to the doctor first thing Wednesday morning.

Even though he spent several hours without a fever Tuesday night, he woke up with a fever of 102 Wednesday morning. We called his doctor and they told us to bring him in. We thought it was a wonderful visit. The doctor noticed his ear infections very quickly and told us that his lungs and everything else sounded good. She sent in a prescription for antibiotics and we went home with an amazing feeling of relief. Prior to his diagnosis my wife and I had a shared, yet unspoken, fear of this mysterious virus that has stopped our country. We feared the worst and hoped for the best and we thought the doctor's diagnosis was the end of having to worry and we could finally discuss that we didn't have to think of the worst anymore. Famous last words.

Much of the day Wednesday he kept a fever between 101 and 103. We gave him a few cool baths and kept with the Motrin. We also started the antibiotics. We were told at the doctor that everything was good and that we only needed to be wary of a fever of 104. We took comfort in that knowledge and were at ease most of the day. Around 9:15 when his fever was steady between 102.5 and 103 my wife requested that I go out for some infant Tylenol because we had just been informed that we could rotate Tylenol and Motrin to help get the fever down. I left and went to every grocery store and drug store in our town. All were closed due to their new COVID hours. I came home and touched my son's back as he slept. It felt hotter than I had felt at any point during the few days. His temperature read 103.9 and we were told 104 was the number to avoid. We immediately got him in a cool bath. When we got him out and his temperature was 103.5. It was the first time we had not seen a significant drop in temp after a bath. We tried a few more things and checked again to see 104.3. We did a rectal thermometer at that point because we were told it can be a little more representative of core body temperature. We saw 105.3. By the time it finished my wife was already on the phone with the doctor who told us to take him to the ER.

The drive to the ER was about 25 minutes. We had to take our 3 year old daughter with us because we left our house at 10:15 and the closest typical child care we have is 30 minutes from our house. It was the strangest arrival to the ER ever. Due to the current outbreak in our country, there was 1 nurse and 1 security guard standing outside the front door doing pre-screenings to determine whether or not people should get to come in. With a 104.2 upon arrival my wife and son were let in quickly, and that was when I found out that there is also a rule currently that only allows 1 parent to enter with a child and I would be sitting in the car for the duration of the visit with no exceptions.

Shortly after finding a parking spot that allowed me to see the door (I'm not sure why it made me feel better to look at the door) is when I posted my request for prayers. I have seen many prayer requests before on Tigernet, and I am always amazed at the outpouring of love and kindness given to people in every circumstance. My post was no different but the feeling I got when reading and seeing prayers was an emotional experience. It was an experience I will not soon forget. My wife sent me some texts and pictures of our son throughout their time in the ER. I was shocked that had them in a "room" with only a single chair and nothing else so my wife had to sit in the chair or stand to try to keep him happy for the 3 hour visit. I say "room" because they essentially just pulled a curtain around them. They tested him for flu and RSV and both were negative. After initially listening to his lungs and thinking they sounded good, a chest X-ray showed pneumonia. That is a scary word for parents. We didn't know what to think, and we really appreciated those of you who shared your experiences with children having pneumonia to let us feel like we knew, at least something, about what to expect.

My son was released from the ER around 2:30 in the morning because his fever finally went down. I guess down is relative because they released him with a fever just over 102. Overnight it continued to go down very slowly. The next day it was back to what I would call a low-moderate fever, but by later in the day the Motrin or Tylenol combined with continuing the antibiotic was taking the fever out completely. On Friday we only had to give him Tylenol twice, but he started to get a rash.

He had what we determined was heat rash across his chest and back with a little on his arms and face for the entire weekend but he did not get a fever at any point after Friday. We are hoping that we saw the last of the rash yesterday because he woke up this morning with his skin finally looking completely clear again. Fortunately the rash didn't seem to bother him or his mood. He was back to his happy self but was getting a little more tired than normal which we expected after missing so much sleep for several days when he had the fever.

My delay to come back to Tigernet was partly to make sure that we had him completely over his ailments, but to also just take the weekend to enjoy spending time with my family and giving time back to my little girl that she wasn't getting when her little brother was needing so much attention from both parents. My wife dealt with very little sleep through the entire process and continued to work from home full time during all of it. She is an absolute super hero and always shows it the most when our family needs it the most. Thank you again for all of your prayers and well-wishes for my son and the rest of my family!

There is no place like Tigernet in more ways than one, but times like these is when it really shows in the best possible way.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Thank you so much for the update. Our prayers for him have been answered. You just turned my gloomy Tuesday into a celebration. Best of luck.
One word of advise, copy some of these posts for your son before they disappear. 40 years from now you can show them to him and he will appreciate how much he is truly loved.

Do you know that old hymn?
Love lifted me
Love lifted me
When nothing else could help,
Love.. lifted me!

And it's true, you can actually feel it when you know that others are praying for you.

One of the strangest but also the most uplifting verses in Scripture (at least to those of us that truly believe) is 1 Thessalonians 5:18 "Give thanks in all things, for this is God's will for you." That's give thanks IN all things. If you are a Christian, what ever you are in, God is there too.
