Union Prevention Meeting...

Jan 30, 2019, 1:51 PM

I have a plant-wide Union Prevention Meeting at 2pm. As a member of management, what questions/rumors can I ask/spread to rile up the workforce?

Rumor that the mandatory meeting is unpayed and/or asking the hourly guys if they remembered to clock-out before the meeting will surely get people fired up.

Any other ideas?

then break it to them that it’s limited to one per person.

I’d be cool with that.

This meeting is being recorded and everyone must sign in with your employee number and Church demonination. Also, sign an acknowledge agreement at the end of the presentation.

What do you have against unions?

Easy... find two people who work on

Jan 30, 2019, 2:08 PM

opposite ends of the plant and ask the following:

"Did you hear they are downsizing a department?" but never say what department

Have Twisted Sister’s, “Were Not Gonna Take It” playing as they enter the conference room.

Jan 30, 2019, 2:12 PM

And then start your speech with, “That song you heard playing was Twisted Sister’s, Were Not Gonna take It. Well guess what, if that’s how you feel, I hope you can start an 80’s hair metal band. Because if you want to work here, you’re gonna have to take it!” and then just start singing, “You’re gonna have to take it. Yes, you are gonna take it. You are gonna take it... in the ###!”

that was a pretty long joke without a real punchline

Jan 30, 2019, 3:38 PM

And yet I laughed.

I grew up in a union family

Jan 30, 2019, 2:20 PM

Ways to rile up the workers:
1 - Talk about the white collar folks (management)
2 - Identify a crappy worker with a lot of seniority, then highlight all the perks they'll receive versus their peers
3 - Determine employees favorite benefits they currently receive (pre-union), then mention how that will now be negotiated as part of a union contract

If you really want to help, figure out what you're doing wrong and fix it so no union is necessary. The fact they are considering one means something is wrong. It's management that buries their head in the sand that forces unions to come into play.

Moved from PA to SC when Mack Trucks moved plant

Jan 30, 2019, 2:42 PM

Union in PA.
Non-Union when plant moved to SC. Dad took a big pay cut.
Union re-installed in SC after a few years. I remember a march through Winnsboro at the time. All of the former PA folks voted Yes. Took some convincing before the SC natives voted yes.

I graduated Clemson with an Economics degree so my life is all sorts of twisted. Lots of hard learning the first 1-2 semesters of Econ wiping out some of my previous pro-union assumptions and biases.

Walk around with a roster on a clip board and pointedly only ask half of the people there to sign it. Like literally pull it out of someones hands if someone you've asked to sign hands it to someone else. Doesn't' matter which people are in which group.

Absolutely.

Jan 30, 2019, 2:43 PM

Once the meeting starts, lock all the doors from the outside so nobody can leave. Then run a hose from your vehicle exhaust pipe under one of the doors and let the fumes build up for about 20 minutes. Then knock on the door to get their attention and hold up a sign to the glass that says 'Still want a union?'.

Trust me, this works. Even if you have to spend all day tomorrow hiring new people.

Find out the dirt on the union leadership

Jan 30, 2019, 2:47 PM

Many are corrupt or benefiting more than the workers they 'support'.

Often times there are multiple unions competing to be the primary lead. Get them to fight amongst themselves.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I should clarify.

Jan 30, 2019, 2:51 PM

There are no union murmurings at our plant. There never has, as far as I know.

One of our smaller plants on the opposite side of the country had a few people sign cards last year, but it never came to a vote. In response to that, our corporate HR decided to get everybody together once a year and show them a 10 minute power point presentation.

Re: I should clarify.

Something for the workers to consider if considering union:

If the other plant on the other side of the country goes through layoffs, the more senior employees can transfer to your site and take current employee's jobs. No questions asked.

Plus the wages/benefits are negotiated every few years (sometimes yearly). Lots of unneeded strife. Hopefully the management (you) takes good care of everybody.

Re: I should clarify.

Jan 30, 2019, 3:04 PM

It's gotten a lot better.

Safety is an industry leader.

I imagine we're paying the best in the area... that's what they tell us.

I think our lowest paid folks are at $12. Senior tradesmen are north of $35/hr.

Nearly unlimited overtime.

Lots of free lunches, etc.

It really isn't that bad, just an insanely dirty and hot environment.

Turnover is fairly high, but most of the folks that leave try to come back within a year.

Let them know that if the union comes, this is what the people who take their jobs will be eating for lunch while you collect unemployment and food stamps.
