make me wonder about their sanity.
Who in their right mind would get rid of the only pool at the school?
Really, they need to tear down Fike and replace. Everything else is getting a complete redo.

YES! Tear down NO! Fike is a wonderful and historic building. There is certain architecture on campus that must be preserved and we've been able to do that at Hardin and other sites. If needed, we build a stand alone site for the pool.

They completely renovated Fike my senior year (2002). It was closed that entire school year. It sucked. However it is so much nicer than it used to be. Not sure it needs to be torn down.

Sounds like they heard the message that moving forward without a pool is not an option. It's either repair/upgrade Fike or the better option of building a Natatorium that Clemson can be proud of.

so the local scuttlebutt is that the $3 million figure bandied about before was utterly baseless; no factual back-up for it at all.

I'll change the oil and brakes on a 1997 Buick Regal but it's going to the scrapyard when it's time for a new transmission and engine. That's how I feel about Fike. Clemson can continue to put money into it so it has a crappy pool that still functions a bit (it will never be great) or it can commit to spending $20M to build a new facility altogether.
Wonder how the "close forever" camp in CU's administration feels about this new lease on life. They probably thought they could rid themselves of this boondoggle right now.
