To the one professor that wouldn't excuse students

Jan 13, 2016, 1:42 AM

Traveling for the game. Get a over yourself... You know who you are. Was told by one student that he failed the class making the trip. Said he wouldn't miss the game... Period

Didn't the semester just start?

How did he fail a class after the first day?

Honestly idk. He said something about how many days he missed for the drive out and back ect. I'm not a student and didn't challenge him. It wasn't my intent to pass along false info , just sympathizing with them

Some of the seminars are like that. My ME seminar last semester was one class missed means you fail.

So you can't drop classes anymore?

Jan 13, 2016, 3:43 AM

Things have changed! Back in the day we had a drop period. You could drop a class after a few weeks and you wouldn't even get a W, it just disappeared. Still for a couple of months you could drop and get a W.

What I liked were the classes with unlimited cuts......

Jan 13, 2016, 6:05 AM

which I took liberally my last two years.

One history prof announced to the class the first day, "Everyone look at Mr. T......; this will be the first and last time you'll see him in class this semester." At semester's end I saw him near Tillman, stopped for a chat, and asked about the final. He cited three topics, told me to write a paper and submit it within a few days. Wrote the paper in the offices of "The Tiger," turned it in.......and made an A. Of course, a few others were not so generous. lol

Unfortunately those "ivory tower" academicians live in an alternate universe, one where they fully believe the world revolves around them and their class. They don't ever worry about such silly, trivial things as funding, recognition on a national stage that are positives for the entire University. They aren't, nor do they ever want to be,"team" players or even democratic, they are dictators, what they say goes. How preposterous! I'd hate to know I earned my living being one of the dreaded "hoops" young people had to jump through. The ones that use their professorship as a pulpit from which to spew their own personal agenda are the worst.

I don't know whether or not this incident is real, but the attitude is. I have seen this more times than I can count in the 10 years I have worked at the university.

I was a student for 6 years in both undergraduate and graduate programs and this was pervasive throughout the faculty. We can thank President Barker for a lot of positives but he did foster this behavior and it's unfortunate.
