My thoughts on the game

Sep 6, 2021, 11:20 AM

II was really proud of our defense. We missed 2 veteran starters but yet the coaches had our guys motivated and ready to play. The coaches had a great game plan and made key in game adjustments and players stepped up, all night, even when Bresee went out briefly with an injury.

I thought Special teams played well. The only exception being when our punt returners refused to fair catch punts and let them bounce inside the 5 yard line. Also, on some of the times that we did fair catch it, our return man would fall down while making the catch. At least he did maintain control and didn’t fumble.

There were a lot of disappointing things about the offense but the most disappointing thing was that our guys did not look prepared and ready to play. We had all summer to prepare and strategize yet the product on the field was not Clemson worthy and not what we have come to expect.

Our qb was seeing ghosts and hung onto the ball way to long all night long. I don’t know if he had trouble going through his progressions or what it was but there were open receivers on most of the plays where he was sacked or tackled for no gain. After witnessing his performance against nd last year, I expected him to play much better. Got to throw the ball away. Maybe he was nervous playing in front of a huge crowd. I really don’t know but he locked on to receivers all night and I don’t remember him doing that last year

OL was #### poor again. Guys were throwing lookout blocks and whiffing all night long. As bad as the OL was, I barely remember seeing the coaches sub any players out. So much for us hearing all summer about all of the cross training and how deep our OL depth is this year.

Coaching on offense was a huge disappointment. Our play calling on offense did not help out our new qb and underwhelming OL. Play calling was vanilla and lacked creativity and it seemed that we didn’t make any in game adjustments.

This post was long so if you read all of this, thanks for sticking with me. In no way, was this post meant to just bash the team. I know that Dabo will make corrections and I know that things will improve but if we make it to the cfp and are still having these same issues with, we, OL and play calling then we will have another disappointing post season exit and waste what appears to be one of coach Venables greatest defenses.

Go Tigers ??

To the extent DJ is to blame, we have to ask what was

Sep 6, 2021, 12:01 PM

was different Saturday night from last year against Notre Dame?

Both games on the road, prime time under the bright lights against a top 5 team. As a true freshman, with only one game under his belt, DJ was masterful, cool as a cucumber, setting records with his performance. He had a great game the week before in his first start as well. Saturday night, a year older and more mature, with an additional full year in the program to learn and grow, and the result was much different.

To say he's not ready, or that he can't handle the bright lights, or that he just isn't as good as we'd hoped ... none of that makes one lick of sense. It flies in the face of what has been demonstrated last year. It indicates, to me at least, that something else, at least in part, was the problem Saturday night. Yes - DJ made mistakes, and had a bad game - no question, no excuses. But, anybody who has forgotten the greatness he showed last year, and thinks that we need to be looking at other options at QB because of Saturday night, needs to wake up and take a closer look. There was plenty of blame to go around for our horrendous offensive performance against UGA, and DJ's performance in particular. I still have no doubt in my mind, that given decent protection and the right offensive scheme and playcalling, DJ Uiagalelei is still one of the best college QBs in the country. Patrick Mahomes/Tom Brady/Deshaun Watson/Trevor Lawrence would have all struggled to some degree in the hot mess we saw Saturday night.

Agree 100 percent. My guess is a combination of three things. Georgia's pass rush was more effective than ND, and they did not have to account for Etienne in the run game.

Second, the loss of his top three receivers from the ND game: Powell, 6 catches for 161 yds. Rodgers 8 catches for 134 yds. Etienne 8 catches for 57 yds. It would make sense if he does not have the same comfort level with this year's WRs.

Third could be self-inflicted pressure, like we saw with Trevor his sophomore season.

I'm agreeing with No. 3......then I'm tacking on the coaches didn't see the glaring holes in Georgia's defense.

One big difference is there were about 12,000 fans at the ND game.

The other is UGA had a better defense than ND.

DJ will improve. He’s got too much talent not to. He had a rough game, but it’s not all on him. This game is on the OL first, and Elliot second. It’s hard to go through your progressions when the defense is meeting you to your drop back. Bockhorst and Putnam have got to go.

Very well stated

Yes. DJ regressed from ND and BC games to the UGA game when he was physically healthier. My take is most of it was the UGA defense, some of it was coaching or lack thereof, and some of it was 1st game rhythms and the bright lights.

DJ is 1st class as his family. He will be back strong. And it bears repeating what you said, hats off to the Tiger Defense and defensive coaches!
