I have been reading the musings of all you "experts" on football coaching and recruiting. Here are some facts of life you might want to contemplate.
1. Dabo has built this program from the ground up, so he knows how it is working.
2. We have 88 scholarships at school as listed in public. By May 1st, if I have read correctly, we have to be down to 85.
3. Some of you want us to go out and get personnel out of the transfer portal.
4. Who do you cut from a scholarship that you have already promised one to and have signed paperwork.
5. In other words, which of you wishes to play God and chooses whose academic life may be dis-continued by your actions. Dabo has given his word and that is what he stands by.
6. If you think you can do better, go to the AD and submit you plans in writing. That is what got Dabo hired. He had a plan outline in writing. If you cannot specifically show a plan, you are just blowing hot air.

Could several of those scholarships be changed to an academic scholarship?

not if the athlete continues to play a sport. some players (steve fuller, stacy fields and i think mike eppley, for example) were actually on prestigious academic 'ships but had to count against the football limits. also, competition for academic $$ at CU is very stiff. there are a lot of candidates and not as much $$ available as the Vandy's and Duke's of the world

85 is a scholarship rule. .NOT.....a roster limit

Clemson Will have to pull scholarships but not boot any one. from what i can tell from Google is the NCAA sets a MINUMUM number of players you have to have to field a team.. but i cant find a solid upper limit
Clemson can only have 85 scholarship players on the team but can also have 20-40 other "walk ons" who get NIL money instead of scholarships.
the more i research the actual facts of the "PORTAL" and roster management the more i believe it is really more and more about NIL money than anything else.

instead of a football scholarship. Wonder if there are rules regarding this. You can bet if there's a way to make it work, SEC teams have looked into it or tried it already.
Bear Bryant would use golf scholarships for football players until the NCAA stopped it, requiring golf scholarships to be used for people that actually played golf. Of course, if they played golf and football, they could be on a golf 'ship. So they probably tried to get 5 star level football players to play golf on the side lol, sacrificing the golf team for the football team, just kidding of course.
Wasn't Kyle Parker on a baseball scholarship?

have an NIL deal large enough to pay for their education and no football scholarship? Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember reading something about that on ESPN or somewhere; that some BYU walk-ons got NIL deals. Not exactly the original intent of NIL, but as good or better use of NIL than as a recruiting tool.
One other question. Can college football teams give partial scholarships like college baseball and other college sports teams do? I've never heard of a college football player getting a partial scholly.

When someone is a two-sport athlete (like Parker), playing football and something else, their scholarship always counts as a football scholarship (per NCAA rules).
I suspect that is designed to avoid precisely this kind of thing. Because there are so many football scholarships and fewer in other sports, they want the schools to support all sports and not cover football players with other scholarships.
While Will Taylor's situation is unique - because he is more of an elite baseball prospect - that is just how the rules work.

Miami did this when they were on probation. They gave some football players track scholarships, but they actually had to compete in track as well. Clever.

You upset some fans when you mentioned what is Dabo’s number 1 goal which is Education.
I listened to Tony Elliott and Brandon Streeter speak at an event. He and Tony were great. Their main focus is education since only a hand full of athletes every make it to the pros so Dabo is focused on recruiting quality athletes with character, integrity and honesty. Those are still his main goals. To answer a question I am sure will be ask , yes Dabo wants to win.
He loves those players (kids) and he wants them to leave Clemson as good men who are good husbands, good fathers and good ambassadors for Clemson.
When Dabo was winning NC’s or making it to the college playoffs no one questioned those priorities. We had 10 fantastic years, the best years in Tiger history , now we have had 2 years of adversity but we still won 10 plus games both years. We won last years bowl but lost this years bowl game.
Our fans seemed to have forgotten that even Danny Ford had some years with adversity. In 1982 and 1983 Clemson was 9-1-1 in 1984 we were 7-4 and in 1985 we were 6-6. In his time at Clemson he won 1- NC, 5- ACC Championship 1-12-0 season.
I’m about the same time frame Dabo has won 2- NC’s , 8 ACC titles Beat SC 7 consecutive years 12 years with 10 or more wins First college team to finish 15-0
Based on all of this I am with bigunfatrat. I am going to put my trust in a proven winner. We are still a highly ranked team. It may take time to adjust to so many changes in what they still refer to as college football. I think he has earned our Respect and our trust that he knows what changes need to be made and when to stay the coarse.
I don’t like to say it but some of our fans seem to be great winners but are poor losers.

I agree with everything you said. There is only one problem. The things we did in the past were very successful under the old landscape. The landscape has now changed. The money has grown to such proportions with these media contracts that ADs are now taking notice and changing their approach to gain advantages. Super conferences, NIL, Portal, etc. now offer them a new way to compete and what worked for us in the past because of our competitive advantages with our focus and culture may not work as well going forward because of the dollars involved, the changing of the rules and the blind neglect of the NCAA to even care what programs are doing right now to gain an advantage.
I don't have any great answers for what we need to do to adapt short of playing the same game ourselves but I do see an unfortunate outcome of professionalizing college sports and the root of this evil is all about money.

Both of you have done a great job with your points. I am probably one of those spoiled fans but for me its not about not appreciating any thing this great human being/coach has done but afraid about him not being able to adjust or look outside the program for qualified coaches.
Then again, I am no expert just on a sports board doing the best I can to make sense of things going on with the program.

I'll reply to the portal scholarships only

Clemson had 88 scholarship players. We had 9 or 10 players jump in the portal and a few declare for the NFL.
After all that, we still have 88 players on scholarship. I was never good at math, so someone will have to show me how that works.
There are 115+ teams in NCAA FBS football. Of all those, only one program I know of has yet to use the portal to find a real player. So for some reason all those teams had no issues with scholarship limitations.
If scholarship limitations are really an issue, perhaps we could forgo the nepotism and nit give scholarships to coaches sons.
I'm not saying we should purge the portal and build our program on it. Just use it a little to patch up a weak or low depth area on the team.
And I definitely understand why Dabo is reluctant to use the portal. I think it's dirty business. And I think that's why Dabo doesn't want to get involved. But I'm afraid that's the world we are living in, and if everyone else is using a resource we are not, it's a recipe to fall behind.
One final thing. Can we just get rid of the notion if we question someone we are not supporting them? That's just ridiculous! I go on many national sites and defend Dabo all the time. Because I honestly am very proud to have him as our coach and representing Clemson University! But that doesn't mean I won't question him. No coach is above questioning. No person is above questioning. I question everyone! I question my parents, my wife, my teachers, my preachers, my president, my governor, my dog and my cat. It's life. But it doesn't mean I disrespect them.

then we would’ve had room for transfer portal players.
Call me crazy, but it seems that “no room at the inn” is yet another excuse for Dabo not to use the portal. He’s had plenty of chances to use it to get a meaningful difference maker, but he hasn’t.
Why? Because he obviously doesn’t want to.

I haven't seen anyone call themselves an "expert". This is a sports message board where folks have the opportunity to state their mind. It's highly unlikely that everyone will post something you always agree with. I disagree with the opinions stated in lots of these posts but recognize they are just opinions and we're all entitled to our own...

In the future…, Instead of giving away scholarships to walk-ons, friends and family, or low ranked high school kids when we’re miss on our primary targets, save them for possible portal transfers.
Many portal kids have proven their value and are looking for an opportunity to play for a big name program and compete for championships and would love the opportunity to compete for a spot at Clemson.
