I want their best shot. Call me a masochist. I want to beat a good team, not whomever shows up. Bummer. It's still a win if we score more points than they do! Lol

All opt-outs hurt CFB. The best players skipping games is a lesser product and provides excuses for a loss.

With all of the opt outs and transfers, maybe it would be more encouraging if we found out who IS going to be playing in the bowl games. We've got defensive players leaving and the Vols have offensive players leaving or hurt. I'm wondering if many fans are beginning to opt out of these games?

Re: TNET: Star Tennessee receiver opts out of Orange Bowl

Dec 14, 2022, 2:16 PM

I think opt outs should be decided after playoffs are decided and before bowl games are picked. If players opt out after then they are fined. That way you don’t have one team with everybody opting out and playing a team who has no opt outs. This way bowls can better predict how good of a matchup they will get.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Star Tennessee receiver opts out of Orange Bowl

Dec 14, 2022, 2:32 PM

That'd be kinda hard to do since it's decided the same day and would give these players just a few hours to make a pretty big decision.

Dec 14, 2022, 4:41 PM

I’m aware it’s the same day but why not push picking bowl games back a week? Not like it would interfere with practice because most take a week off

Dec 14, 2022, 6:03 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Star Tennessee receiver opts out of Orange Bowl ]

So you are saying that players that aren't paid by the schools should be fined?

That is implausible and ridiculous.

How about giving the players NIL money if they show up for the game? The bowl sponsors could do that if they wanted.

Re: TNET: Star Tennessee receiver opts out of Orange Bowl

Dec 15, 2022, 1:24 PM

Most players opting out are on NIL deals.. and I said to give them a chance to opt out without fine but if they don’t opt out before the games are picked the following week and decide not to play then they should be fined. Players already get lots of gifts for playing in these bowl games

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Star Tennessee receiver opts out of Orange Bowl

Dec 14, 2022, 2:04 PM

I don’t understand the op outs. The season is not over, if that’s the case and your team is not in the CFP then just don’t play the last few games instead of just the last one.

Also isn’t the best way to “ prepare for the draft” is to practice and play more football?

What are they going to do in a 2 week period to “ prepare” that practice won’t do for them

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Star Tennessee receiver opts out of Orange Bowl

Dec 14, 2022, 2:07 PM

Yep. If they are so concerned about an injury hurting their draft status, why not just play lights out in September-October and then sit out November? Don't be surprised if some start doing this.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ha. Good point***

YET ANOTHER QUITTER

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did he always support his teammates from the bench?

Dec 14, 2022, 2:07 PM

Just asking. He said that he'd not be playing in the game but he'd be in Miami to support his teammates like he always had. Pretty cool to see a benchwarmer shoot for the NFL! He must be a really good bench-cheerleader!

He's not supporting his teammates. He's supporting his own career and bank account. Call it what it is. The new slogan in college football bowl season - Me > We.

Re: Did he always support his teammates from the bench?

Dec 14, 2022, 2:32 PM

The dude seemed to play his heart out every game this season, and is a large reason why they were ever in the CFP discussion to begin with. At the very least they probably don't beat Alabama without him going off for over 200 yards and 5 touchdowns. I don't like seeing players opt out either, but it's hard for me to call these guys quitters for sitting out a non-championship game after they gave their everything during the season trying to help their team win a championship. These bowl games are played a month or longer after the end of the regular season which gives them that much less time to heal up for the combine if they happen to suffer an injury in the bowl game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Did he always support his teammates from the bench?

Dec 14, 2022, 10:36 PM

My feeling is anyone that opts out is quitting on the team they preached to love during the season. All year they talk about the team. Then all of a sudden it becomes an I.

No way someone who opts out should go to the game and walk the sidelines. They can sit in the stands and pay for their ticket.

Dec 14, 2022, 6:10 PM

I think players will be more likely to stick around for the playoffs because it is more meaningful. But who knows? We'll find out in a few years.

I'm on the players' side here, no doubt. And the Orange Bowl is a classic - it is an honor to play in the Orange Bowl, even if our fans don't seem to think it.

But there are so many more garbage bowls than in the past. There are bowl teams with losing records! Why are they being rewarded? So ESPN gets programing.

I've said it before, but if the bowl sponsors for these made-for-tv events want the players to not opt out, they can make NIL deals for everyone on the team that shows up. If ESPN even cares about opt-outs (and that is a big "if"), they can make NIL deals for everyone on the team that shows up.

Probably twenty of these games are just made to be programing. No history or tradition. Unpaid players have little reason to be the "actors" in these TV shows unless they think they will improve their draft stock or think the trip will be fun.

Their offense is gutted and their defense isn't very good

Not really any excuse to lose this one now.

Haven't we been complaining about Myles Murphy not playing?

I'm sure someone on Volunteer Net is posting:

B - Vols win close... Clemson was without their best player.
C - Vols lose close... wow and Clemson was without their best player.

Besides the playoffs, all bowl games are just an exhibition now. They should just call it the Winter game instead of the Spring game. Battle of the 2nd strings

Apparently a free trip to Miami to "support the team"...

I understand why already high round draft projections are opting out….but still, I’d like it if the NFL owners could send a message….hey, what are going to do if our team isn’t in the playoff picture and your contract is up….you gonna want to sit out so you don’t risk an injury? It’s the same scenario.

I guess somebody forgot to tell these players about this being a playoff game ?????.
It appears that they are starting to see through that B.S. statement made earlier by Coach Swinney.
