Report: ACC in "high-level" talks with Big 10 and Pac-12 for alliance

The ACC may just have its answer to the aggressive expansion from its Southeastern neighbor. The Athletic reported late Friday that the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 "are engaging in high-level discussions about an alliance." Per The Athletic report, the three conference's move is an answer to the SEC's s Read Update »

If this is really going on I am really starting to wonder if there is something to the rumors a few weeks ago about the SEC coming after the major football schools in the ACC and BIG (CU, FSU, Ohio St and Michigan).

I thought the same thing. Sounds like the Big 10 and ACC are terrified to lose these 4 marquee schools to the SUC.

Why in the wide world of sports would you doubt this is happening? SEC is a Corp raider so every one else is fortifying their position

Now that would throw a huge monkey wrench of the esecpn plans to take over college FB as the Big dog in the yard, and a move like this with 3 power 5 conferences joining hands, it would run the esecpn dogs back up on the porch.

Also, a move like this could force espn to get out of the business of believing they ruled college sports with just a snap of their fingers. Something they should have been forced to do a long time ago with them showing the rest of college FB, that it was the sec, and everybody else was being thrown the scraps!!!!

I really hope this works out for the three conferences to put a stop to the SEC/Disney/ESPN power grab.

"New ACC commissioner Jim Phillips, who was announced as one of 23 members of the constitution committee, has told ADs that strength comes in numbers, not in one conference stacking the deck. This is where the real difference could come for these three conferences."

Sounds as though our new commissioner is being proactive instead of lacking any vision (except for UNC) like our previous commish.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's no longer the BIG 12...

Aug 14, 2021, 7:42 PM

their marquee programs are gone with no opportunity to add any comparable programs even if they added 4 programs to make up for those 2...

they really offer nothing of substance at this point, but an alliance that would include Clemson, FSu, Miami, osu, michigan, michigan state, wisconsin, penn state, USC, UCLA, oregon, stanford, Oregon State, Va Tech, Pitt at the least is going to be able to challenge the sec because this would be a legitimate national footprint, a legitimate "sea to shining sea" footprint...

Aug 14, 2021, 7:47 PM

an opportunity to join one of the 3 conferences that would best align with geography and potential rivalries...

that would truly set up a big F U to espn and the sec and really force notre dame to come into the ACC full time.

As far as TV goes, this opens up the opportunity to CBS, FOX and the former Turner stations to align themselves to provide TV coverage without a care about footprints because they all would have every time zone covered. This could really set up much like NFL TV coverage but even better...

They really do need to break away from the NCAA!

The Group of 5 also does not want the bowl season to go away; I would think! The compensation is hopefully worth going?
The experience for the kids if it's a nice bowl; is likely something the school couldn't provide.

They won't get a FBS championship! Maybe a G5C championship! There would be weak FBS schools who think they could go down and win it from time to time, LOL! One particular school in the middle of South Carolina comes to mind. LOL!

Just thinking - there may be some schools who could end up on the outs from the 3 conferences! Certainly can't see one big behind conference! Arizona St. vs. Clemson on a Thursday night in the desert anybody?

Or Arizona vs. Rutgers in November(eeewwww)!

IDK - seems weird. I will have to see what they come up with to envision it.

I have been preaching this since the OK/TX move...The other P5 conferences must stich together as a voting bloc, to control the future of the CFP and big boy college football! Sure...there may be some inter-conference scheduling, like play one PAC 12 or BIG 10 school each year, but what's wrong with that! But the big thing is the voting bloc!

Oh my God, you don't get it do you? this isn't about the north or the south, it's about the money that it takes to perform at the level that Clemson, and all other top 25 colleges perform at. Take away the money as the sec/esecpn are attempting to do with to the rest of college FB, and pour into their alliance, and they control college FB at least, and college FB is where the most of the money is made. That is the very reason the NIL was forced on college FB, it opened the door for the sec/esecpn to do what they just done with Texass, and Oklahoma, and they were coming after more schools just a couple at the time to try and cover up their main intentions, taking over college sports with Simi pro college teams, and paying colleges big money to avoid the huge cost of building Simi pro stadiums around the country!!!!

The NCAA has noone to blame, yet again

Aug 13, 2021, 11:25 PM

They've continually dropped the ball. They were not proactive to find a way for college athletes to earn compensation...high profile states take action. There you have the NIL.

They saw big conferences expanding to basically evict half of the D1A or now FBS schools from competeing for a NC. My thought is, if there is no way to even get a chance to be at the table, why play. Would you play a video game that no matter how good you are, there is no way to win? Its like playing Monopoly. Before you start playing, 2 players were picked and told they could play but after an hour they couldnt play anymore. No chance to win the game. You could have half the properties, hotels on all. Railroads, utilities, you just hit the Free Parking jackpot....then bam, times up. Bye. Would you play? I sure as hell wouldn't. I'd go find somebody playing scrabble or Life. NCAA doesnt head it off and you end up with a bigger divide between power 5 and group of 5, that grows every year. The lack of interest in group of 5 football drops continually. Very few big money games, networks don't carry very many of their games, noone outside their region gets to see them and they build no following.

BCS to playoff was a good move. But they came up with nothing to improve it.

Here is what I think they should have done.

Cap the number of programs allowed in each conference at 14. Of course, that's FB, other sports would vary. Mandate conference membership to compete in post season. You got 3 years to do so. After that....nada. Nada Dame.

10 Conferences, 10 playoff spots. Do not dictate how conference champs are determined but only confernece champs get a spot. #1 and #2, get first round bye.

Unless some drastic action occurs, the SEC will basically crown their champ the national champ. The only way I see to stop this, is for every program not in the SEC, to refuse to schedule

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The SEC can crown their champion, but who cares?

Aug 14, 2021, 3:06 AM

They don’t have the authority to crown their own national champion. All of the other college football teams would not honor that, and would have their own national championship that matters more and actually means something.

Aug 14, 2021, 7:09 AM

Who knows how this will all shake out?

The one I am hearing most is that 10 years from now there will be a group of about 40-50 schools that have banded together and formed their own league/conference/alliance/association and are totally independent of any other organization, governing themselves.

These meetings make it sound like we might be headed to two independent organizations. Sorta like the old days in pro sports, before mergers.

American and National leagues were separate before the merged.
NBA and ABA were separate leagues.
NFL and AFL were separate leagues.

Could it be that the NCAA is disbanded and two separate groups of schools emerge? Would that mean one group would play no games with any school not in their group? (Florida/FSU, GT/UGA, Clemson/coots would no longer play?)

I have no idea how it will end up. But, I am certain there are ALL KINDS of discussions going on between conferences and conferences, between conferences and schools, and between schools and schools.

Everybody knows the landscape is changing. Everybody is trying to figure out how they can live in the best house on the landscape when it settles.
