TNET: NCAA Council adopts new transfer rule

Apr 15, 2021, 5:09 PM

NCAA Council adopts new transfer rule

The NCAA Division I Council officially passed a major measure on Thursday. The NCAA passed the long-expected move to allow for a one-time transfer for prospects. The transfer rule allows a football athlete, as well as athletes in baseball, basketball and hockey, to transfer without sitting out a sea (Photo: Charles Nye / USATODAY) Read Update »

I’m sure Ryan Day, Kirby and Muschamp and the rest of that bunch will raise their hand and admit to tampering.

Headline should read: "NCAA Council adopts free agency"....***

But after further consideration, it's probably a preemptive move to avoid being sued and taken to court about it in the future. If this is the case, at least they are thinking ahead of time.

I still believe the effect on college football and basketball could be huge (and negative).

Recruiting now moves from high schools to opponents campuses. The current recruiting knife fight may now evolve into a daily, exhaustive game of off-the-field offense vs. defense. Coaches who lose out initially will remain in contact with potential transfers for up to 3 more years (in some cases).

The dirty mud pit of recruiting could morph into a huge swamp that will be impossible to even pretend to monitor.

Very true. I am hoping it does not destroy the sport I love, but I have a feeling that many of us on this board who are diehard Clemson fans and truly pull for these kids on and off the field will be disenfranchised over the next decade and lose interest.

The NCAA must come up with very serious tampering violations, but it will not.

The NCAA may very well come up with rules about tampering--the problem with them is enforcement. It will be the same as enforcement is now--the big guys get by with egregious violations, but won't get more than a slap on the wrist.

They're only allowed to transfer ONCE without sitting out.

It's not very fair that the school can fire a coach and punish the student for not wanting to play there anymore for a coach they don't like.

This rule has caused coaches to over recruit (example) when we had Hunter Johnson, Kelly Bryant, Tucker Isreal.

Why should an athlete be punished because a coach lied to them? No, I don't think a kid should give up his chance to experience playing college football because he came to Clemson and Clemson got a surprise commitment who will keep the other kid on the bench for 3 years.

Coaches lie all the time, this puts some accord for their words under them.

These students are exploited for billions and are given a 15k a year education in exchange while their coach makes $8 million dollars.

College sports are supposedly amateur, but many of the College coaches make double what the NFL coaches do, while the people on the field get nothing.

You lose the "amateur" tag when Clemson charges more for home games then the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers do.

All this, but GOD FORBID the athlete gets ONE chance to put themselves in the right situation because their coach lied to them.

If your concern is coaches leaving, then the rule should be “if the coach leaves the school then the player gets a one time transfer with no penalty.”
If you want the rule changed for money reasons, then be prepared to pay more for tickets at college games. Colleges do not have cities paying to build a stadium and keep it up for them. They also have to pay for tuition, housing and meals that the NFL does not pay. And the revenue generated by the NFL TV contracts is much higher than colleges get.
The problem is that you are comparing apples and oranges.

What specific coaching lies are you referring to? You think when a kid transfers from Clemson or doesn't play it's because Dabo lied to him?

You think when a kid signs to play QB at Clemson (or anywhere else), coaches should no longer recruit talented QBs? Is that how it works for these kids in the NFL....guaranteed playing time? Or, do you think that life doesn't always work out the way you hoped it might, even for a 4-star athlete.

No one is exploiting these players. No one has to accept a full scholarship. Think it's exploitation, go earn college money in the Army.

I hope coaches are smart enough to wait until after July 1 to release Depth Charts or there will be legend in their own mind kids transferring all over the country. Horrible rule.

It’ll be those game changer recruits that coaches will keep recruiting with promises of money & stardom immediately! Dabo won’t play that game but many will.

That’s going to hurt the honest guys & hurt depth charts in the future. Look for a full list of co-starters coming from all the coaches!

Dabo has been playing everybody & that will help but hurt when Demarkus Bowmans come along with depth ahead of him. He’s in the same or worse position in Florida On the depth chart having to earn it but he will have to stay there for a while.

I hope this doesn’t affect us but it will, & we may have to look at transfers now.

Some schools could recruit a whole position group at a time from the TP and make instant major fixes on the team.

Whew doggie!
