TNET: Clemson Basketball signs three to 2022-23 class

Clemson Basketball signs three to 2022-23 class

CLEMSON, S.C. — Head Coach Brad Brownell and his staff added three players to the Clemson University men’s basketball program on Wednesday. Chauncey Wiggins (Covington, Ga./Grayson), Chauncey Gibson (Dallas, Texas/Kimball) and RJ Godfrey (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) all signed letters of intent to Read Update »

Really solid class -- two top 150 players and top 5 in the strong state of GA, and one who will probably be top 150 by the end of year in Gibson who is a tall guard who can really shoot it and run a team.

His best class was two years ago with three four star recruits Hall, Prosper, and Kidd, but considering two of those guys transferred after last season, took a lot of luster out of it. If this class stays in tact should be good players for Clemson. I think two of three will get minutes next season. Wiggins needs to get a lot stronger to play inside at the college level, but will be a good player in a year or so.

I'd say it is probably a top 3 or 4 class under Brad, but all these guys are underrated so could end up being a lot better than that.

yep possibly that one. I never understood either of those transfers. Both those guys could have done well at Clemson

I agree. I believe O-Max was just not comfortable when his assistant Coach Goins who recruited him left for the BC job, but Kidd was just crazy. He didn't even play much in VA Tech's blowout win over Main. He would have been the 2nd big guy playing after PJ Hall. The only other reason they left might have been back lash over the walk on O'Neil transfer who was upset what Coach Brownell might have told after losing to Miami in the ACCT.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The O’Neil situation was a complete joke.

Just may be Brad's best class. I know ppl will look at it as star rating, but that doesn't tell the whole story as you'd laid out in another post. All 3 come from tough HS leagues and should be earlier contributors than perhaps some 4 star players.

Are we signing someone who can play the 5? We are pretty

Maybe this spring. Don't know yet. Probably need one more 6-9 to 6-10 guy.

Only one three star player among these three. To compete in the ACC you must be signing as a minimum two four star players each year and never sign anyone less than a three star. That is a given. Brad Brownell simply cannot recruit to be competitive in the ACC and should not be coaching in this league! How many more years is it going to take Drad to realize this?

All three are 3 stars. Two are top 150 players in the country. The other should be Gibson and he will by the end of the year. He had a great scoring game with his fellow 5 star guard teammate in Texas event last weekend, and everyone is saying how underrated he is. 6-6 guard and great shooter and passer as a guard. Everyone is saying how underrated he is. The composition rating for these three is they are rated #41 in school ratings. If agree we need more 4 star or higher recruits but until Brad gets a 1st round NBA Draft pick, it is probably going to be the case until he lands one or two of those. As long as we have a top 40 class with a couple of top 20 classes once in awhile that is the way to go.

So you're disappointed by our class that ranks 42nd

Nov 11, 2021, 5:10 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson Basketball signs three to 2022-23 class ]

but are you aware of the key aspects of our program that rank below 42nd?

Such as:

-Head coach salary 52nd nationally (10th in ACC)
-Men's basketball program expenditures 58th nationally (13th in ACC)
-Average attendance (2019): 71st (11th in ACC)
-Assistant coach average salary ranked below 175th

A historical ranking of college basketball programs a few years ago put us 65th all time. Link: https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2017-03-29/ap-releases-top-100-college-basketball-programs-based-poll

None of this is to say that we shouldn't strive to be better. We should have a goal of having top recruiting classes every year. But that isn't just going to happen because we want it to. There has to be a commitment there from the university and fans, and there clearly is not.

As I've said many times, this coaching staff is overachieving big time. Based on our history and the above data, we shouldn't be in the NCAA Tournament, nor should we finish above the bottom third of the ACC.

But please don't let any of this stop you from your continual complaining.

Then contact the school, not us? Also some of those numbers are maxed variables. We can only have 8.5K because that is size of our arena. It is going to low compared to the bigger arenas.
We had a top 20 recruiting class two years ago. Are you blaming two of the three players of that class leaving because we don't have enough support? Lol

It is your same ole mantra. Question - how is paying CBB more going to make him a better recruiter?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

I don’t think Brownell needs to be paid more.

Nov 11, 2021, 10:27 PM

The point is that he is not in the top 50 nationally in salary yet people complain about a 42nd ranked recruiting class or finishing “only” 5th in the ACC or “only” being the 27th national seed in the NCAA Tournament. It’s ridiculous to hold the guy to such a high standard.

What I would like to see is an increased budget for assistants. Why is our assistant coach budget below the national average? Why are our program expenditures so low compared to many of the programs we compete against on the court and for recruits?

If this stuff doesn’t matter, how would you feel about cutting our football budget? I know it’s an apples to oranges comparison, but it wouldn’t have ever been acceptable for our football program to spend so little comparatively speaking. Why is it acceptable for basketball?

Nov 11, 2021, 10:38 PM

Yes you have said this many times. It is your moniker. But paying him more isn’t going to make him a better recruiter. A decade of mediocre recruiting is proof of the pudding. And recently his upper level recruits have left the team. I have said that we need to have a top 25 performance ever year. And our administration needs to do whatever it takes to get there. More money, new coach, whatever. It is just my opinion that he has not proven that he can attract top level players. Something needs to change.

We are hanging jerseys from the rafters for our all time top basketball players this year. How many of the introductory class were 4 star or better? Tree? What was Elden? I know Trevor Booker was a 3 star.
Boogie and Buckner weren't 4 stars...

Re: I don’t think Brownell needs to be paid more.

Nov 12, 2021, 7:56 AM

Tree was the only 5 star recruit if you had stars back then. Trevor Booker was a high 3 star recruit. Elden Campbell and Dale Davis were the few 4 star top 100 players. the rest were mainly 3 star recruits. Actually Larry Nance and Horace Grant might have been 2 star recruits.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Again, I’m not saying that Brad should be paid more.

Nov 12, 2021, 8:00 AM [ in reply to Re: I don’t think Brownell needs to be paid more. ]

I’m saying that the basketball program overall needs more money.

We can’t keep having one of the lowest basketball budgets in the conference but expect to start magically having consistent top 25 seasons. That’s illogical.

Either Clemson wants to go “all in” on basketball or it doesn’t. Over 100 years of data tells us that they do not. Here’s hoping that changes in the future.

You miss the Judge's point completely. It's not that doubling, tripling or even quadrupling any one coach's salary will suddenly make THAT coach a better coach. It's INVESTING in the entire personnel program as well as peripheral expenditures to enable more aggressive and extended recruiting. Brownell and staff have done a very good job of recruiting with what they have to work with. But, so many people on this board only see W's and L's in one of the toughest and most competative Conferences in the country.
