Lol I’m sure the schools have to approve these so it probably doesn’t mean jack but it screams “thanks Dabo, but Brent is the man.” Probably how OU wanted it worded so I’m taking it with a grade of slaw.

I love his comment, "hey Dabo, thanks for introducing me to BV." Rather salty don't you think?

Quite interesting how he got Dabo out of the way first and then went on some rampage of how great he and coach V work together! IF he had any ideas of leaving he should have thought about before accepting the new position and salary increase!

this publically the second he leaves? Not smart burning your bridges.

I am feeling less concerned about Bates leaving.

This is Todd Bates cutting down Dabo with a PC 'statement of gratitude' that is obviously meant to be interpreted as 'thanks but no thanks.'

The next step down the ladder for Bates (and for Oklahoma, which as a near certainty had 'sanctioned' T.Bates' message) is a 'Dabo is a fink' comment.

Being competitive / wanting to do well at your new job is fine, but the Oklahoma / Venables / T.Bates message reeks of low class.

Very disappointing from Oklahoma, but it doesn't reflect poorly on Clemson.

Then why accept a contract extension literally 3 weeks before if you wanted to go out there? I guess used it as leverage for more money? Oh well

Great point TigerBrosPod®.

That's the one good thing (inadvertent as it was) in T.Bates leaving Clemson as if the rent was overdue; by first leveraging Clemson for more money, T.Bates then hosed Oklahoma for more than what he would have gotten from Clemson.

(Not that a few $100,000 here or there makes any big difference to Oklahoma, but good nevertheless see that Oklahoma coughed up more than they needed to get T.Bates.)

Brent, thanks for what you did when you were here, Now run along and leave Clemson alone.

That's really high praise from Venables

Can't imagine what he'd have said if either of his 1st two choices had followed him.

For Venables to come up with higher praise for his first 2 choices (with T.Bates being his 3rd choice), he would have had to have gone to a cave in Mecca and grow a ZZ Top beard.

Not naming Bates co- dc was a mistake. His name has been at the top only overshadowed by Venables for the past few years at Clemson. But hey no big loss according to the "Never Question Dabo" crowd.
Conn is on the clock.

You don’t think Dabo didn’t know this? He picked who he

Thought was best man for job, 2 National titles gives him the right to make that choice. It may be genius. It may be ####. But Dabo earned the right to choose. I’m on board with his decision.

Bates leaving might be an outcome of not being one of the co DC's but we've yet to see if it was a mistake. Dabo was going to put somebody in danger of being picked off regardless of who he chose. I would almost question Coach Reed not being given more consideration more of a mistake. When you look at the development of talent, I think that Reed stands out among everybody.

Dabo's promoting from within has been hailed as something that develops the cohesiveness of the culture. What has gotten ignored is that often individuals feel like they were more deserving than the one selected, and often that same person would not feel slighted if an outside hire were to have been chosen.

Reed seems pretty content, but there will be teams who continue to fish in Dabo's waters. Don't be surprised if they get a bite.

in the tank--fumes! In business you pay almost as much attention to the #2 person
in a field as #1. Guys leave-it's just what happens. As far as the "Dabo is right" crowd count me in. This program went from being worthy of praise only occasionly to 6 consecutvice BCS appeaerances, 2 National Championshipsand 10 consecutive 10+ win seasons with more to come I kinda like my odds with Dabo. We all see the window dressing(no disrespect intended) when it comes to coaching-the ones actively coaching on the sidelines. The Head coach is the one who melds the different parts together to fashion a champion. Right now, news seems to be focused on the sky is falling. It's not. I live in MT and I promise the Big a$$ Sky is not falling.

A very “short” thanks to Dabo and more about Brent. Sounds like to me as soon as Coach V got the HC at Oklahoma Coach Bates was thinking about going there.

Recruiting especially on the dline has been down since he took over in 2019 as RCoordinator. He may be relentless but he’s not a closer…see Travis Shaw…looking forward to what these changes will bring and getting back to the top. Dabo knows

Seems like Venables is being an ingrate.

I understand why Venables left. Good for him. I'm sure Dabo approved. But taking Bates seems like an ungrateful slap in the face to Dabo. I wonder how Dabo feels about this.

I'm sure there were hours of conversation between them, rather than just parsing a paragraph of public statement. This it's starting to feel more like a divorce than spinning off a new company, though.

It's hard to see how there aren't some hurt feelings on all sides on this one, though. I hope five weeks of business doesn't ruin years of friendship. Hard to see how it doesn't get personal at some point, though, especially because ALL of these guys LOVE to win.

Venables has worked at Clemson for the last 10 years. Who else could he possibly know well enough to want to be a coordinator that wasn't a former colleague at Clemson?

Bates wanted the "co" D-Coordinator position. Conn got it instead and we know the rest of the story.

Venables is gone to BlowU now, let it go. Tired of seeing his ugly face on this site.

Straight up sounds like he is in love with BV!

Very crappy way of handling Dabo in the message. Maybe he is angry about Conn getting the promotion over him but he is acting like a scorned wife.
