Who in the ACC can catch Clemson? One former coach weighs in

If you’re a team in the ACC that wants to make a splash nationally, you have to go through Clemson. Clemson has won five consecutive ACC Championships and has appeared in the College Football Playoff each of the last five seasons. Full Story »

Should we hear from other old Clemson coaches?

Would yall be real interested in what Tommy West thinks of the current situation?

Me neither.

I don't mean to be too harsh about Tommy Bowden, but he did his bit for Clemson and moved on. He is not one of us.

The best thing Tommy Bowden ever did for Clemson was to hire a real estate developer as the wide receivers coach.

No problem for me.
Does he work for the ACC Network?

I know y'all aren't especially fond of Tommy. And, that is understandable. But, his analysis si spot on. I think one of the major reasons Brown eft UNC was becasue he couldn't see a path forward for him to beat FSU. He made the decision that he would have a better chance at winning the national championship by going to Texas than staying at UNC.

And, on a side note, Bobby Bowden was VERY close to doing the same thing. Only the hurdle he couldnt' get over was Florida. In 1986 Florida won its sixth straight game over FSU. (Come from behind foruth quarter win aided by a "phantom holding call." In the post game press conference Bowden was as down as he ever was in public. He even said, "Well if I can't beat Florida, maybe its time for them (FSU administration)to find soembody who can." Fortunately for us, he stayed. 1987 was the start of 14 straight top five finishes.

Tommy is right. There is more than one coach out there thinking, "How co I build a program that can compete with Clemson? Or, can I?"

Yep! Pretty spot on, and concerning Tommy Bowden, he took us as far as he was capable (or willing) of taking us. He seemed to want to just get by after his first few years. IMO, he seemed to lose his passion the last few years he was at Clemson. That said, I'm glad he came to Clemson, and especially glad that he hired Dabo. For that, he gets a feather in his cap from me, but I dare say that very few regret his leaving, and I'bet nobody is glad that he wriggled his way into a pretty nice contract extension just before leaving.

I'm sorry, but Tommy Bowden analysing how to win the ACC is

like having General Custer analysing how to make money at a Native American Casino. Neither of them have a clue about how to do it.

My point Ed Zachary! And he STILL knows just as much about winning the ACC Championship as Tommy Bowden!

Not sure I believe that about FSU

Jun 20, 2020, 9:48 AM

They may have a few good players, but there are a lot of average players, especially on the lines. James Blackmon was pummeled. FSU might return in a few years. Gotta recruit.

Any time TB talks about Clemson, his words sound as if he is still butt hurt over his ending at Clemson.

As far as when FSU will really be competitive again in the ACC, I think that Norvell will have them back running right behind Clemson no later than the 2021 season, and by 2022-2023, Clemson and FSU will be back fighting it out to see what team plays in the ACC championship. Dabo and Norvell will have to schedule one of the top SEC teams and beat them to stay in the playoff talks bc one or the other will always be a one loss season bc we're both in the ACC Atlantic division. And if Clemson or FSU was in the coastal, one or the other would still have one loss after the ACCCG!!!!

My wish has been that the ACC would bring in another power FB team and force ND to join in FB also, or kick them altogether and bring two power FB schools, and split the ACC up into 4 divisions with one each of the best teams in all 4 divisions. Absolutely no Clemson/FSU in the same division....

As fans we tend to look at shooting star recruits: the one great RB or QB. What Dabo has done has taken time but ... he is now two deep at almost every position and three deep in others. That is how championships are won: just keep rolling in replacements.

Tommy Bowden's problem at Clemson is that he never believed in Clemson's full potential. In Tommy's mind Clemson had a defined ceiling and the most we could ever hope for was maybe an ACC Championship every blue moon.

I think the best example of Tommy's limitations on Clemson is when he discouraged Dabo from wasting time going after a certain 5 Star recruit we all know and love. In Tommy's mind Clemson was not capable of bringing in top talent from out of state.

Thank goodness we have Dabo who is not constrained by negativity and believed in Clemson's potential to be the best.

That sounds like a fair assessment.
I disagree with Bowden on 2 things. First, I don’t think Clemson is the FSU of the 80s and 90s. I think Clemson is better and more dominant than FSU was in that era. Second, I don’t think Mack left UNC to run away from FSU. I think he knew that in spite of the fact that his UNC team was very good there was still no real drive in football from the administration and even the fans. (I was there at that time and heavily involved in athletics). I see a different push in football now from administration and fans. I think Mack made sure it was different this time before he came back. Maybe it took years of embarrassment in football to change things. I’m not making any prediction about catching Clemson but I do think it’s a safe bet that based on recruiting trends we are about to be pretty good in a couple years.

I don't really disagree with TB for the most part and let's be honest, he did provide a real spark for us at the time but never really considered us to be challengers to FSU but let's be clear here:
For FSU's dominance, Let's talk about the 90's not the 80's and 90's. In the 80's they beat us only due to the "punt-rooskie" and when we went back down there we took them to the woodshed like never before - at that time. We have sense added to that! Make no mistake - we could play with anyone in the 80's. Between probabion and not quite being able to win to right game or to lose the wrong one (e.g. NCSU on year, BC once or twice, etc.) we just couldn't get over the hump after the 81 Natty!

I do agree with him on who the challenger might be. In division, while you can lose any game any time (i.e. see Pitt and Syr vs Clemson) the only team that can really challenge and have comparable players anytime soon would be FSU. As for UNC - I don't see them in the Clemson, Ohio State, Bamma, OK conversation as a PROGRAM at this point.

We were a stepping stone for greener pastures later on. Unfortunately for all of us, he stumbled. Showed that he reached his ceiling when he came here.

Tommy did pull us out of a low place and got the ball rolling with the administration behind him raising money an improving our facilities. We had some good seasons an exciting games with Tommy. I’m grateful we hired him because the seeds were planted for Dabo to build from.

Tommy seemed to have his dads number and knew how to beat him. Tommy suggestion to use Dabo was spot on.

Tommy’s game plan for Wake Forest was incredible in that we got a new an improved version. I will always wish Tommy the best and be thankful for his contribution to bring Clemson together determined to win after he left.

TB did his best at Clemson and really wanted to be here for the long haul but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. I like CTB and think he is a good man . He did a lot for Clemson and is A part of what we have now . Also he was a Coot slayer, 63-17 !

Florida State was really good for about 7 years. The 4 year by they got on recruiting to conference standards ran out, The the playing field became balanced. Do not act like it is not true.

I didn't read the article or any of the comments, but from going off of the title alone, nobody is going to catch Clemson anytime soon. After last year's recruiting class and the one the Tigers are working on presently, nobody in the ACC is going to be gaining ground at any near time in the future.
Clemson has had a phenomenal amount of success with good recruiting classes, but now they have turned it up a few notches. Clemson has absolute control of the ACC for the foreseeable future. There's no arguing that at the moment.

Really?

His opinion on who is up-and- coming in the ACC is not surprising. Its about as obvious as the egg still on his face. Personally, I'm wanting to see what happens with BC. Addazio had very consistent programs, not great, but very consistent. New coach, they'll be interesting to see.
