TNET: Tony Elliott's spring game wish list: Clemson OC looks ahead to Saturday

Tony Elliott's spring game wish list: Clemson OC looks ahead to Saturday

Tony Elliott doesn’t know what role he will play during Saturday’s spring game, whether he will have head coaching duties or be an offensive coordinator for one of the teams. He does know that he wants to be on the sideline, and he has a wish list of what he wants to see. Full Story »

Absolutely, we would be hearing the same "talk" if we were a 20th place team returning without the same roster that we played the 2018 season with, as it is without us returning with the same roster as we won the NC with. It's a different season with us retooling with new faces on the roster. For me, that's what's so exciting about college FB, everybody gets to start a new season with a lot of different players than what last years team had!!!

The real development of the team

Will take place in the summer months when all the players are on their own to get ready for the season.
This is when the hard work will really start and the leadership will begin to take place. It’s also when the S and C guys do their thing. At this, the Tigers are always very good.

"Summertime" . . . when the cream rises fastest . . .

The true character of each individual will be defined by the work they put in when no one is watching.

This is when backs are made broader to bear the load, when hearts double in size to maximize effort, when senses are made keen to know before it happens, when reflexes are made instinctive to compete at full speed, when hands are made ready to be "ring worthy".

Lots of "coach speak", but when all is said and done, my guess is our coaches are frothing at the mouth about our prospects, even with the loss of outstanding talent. Really, it's just what all of us have lusted after for so many years - to be able to just plug in more guys who are as good as the ones they are replacing. The depth we have is to die for, IMO, and the rich just keep getting richer as can be seen with Clemson being on every recruits top list of "dream offers".

I think he mean we were efficient in 2018 & not 2017

Apr 2, 2019, 11:46 AM

in regards to explosive plays.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, he was saying efficient as an opposite to explosive.

Apr 2, 2019, 12:26 PM

He was saying in '17 we were more efficient...staying ahead of the chains, etc...because the explosive plays weren't nearly as numerous, in the passing game, anyway (thus the ultimate departure of Kelly Bryant). He doesn't want this team to rely solely on explosive plays, they need to be efficient, as well. And he's right. Teams that live and die by the big play don't fare too well usually.

I thought that our team done really well with staying ahead of the chains with our Run and Passing game. To think anything different would be believing that we were just lucky at being the first team to ever go 15-0 and winning every game against every team put on the field with us. Personally, I think that our coaches done a good job of mixing up the Run/Pass plays with our team last season, and I don't think that luck had a thing to do with how our season turned out.

Actually, the way our team played through out the season, the play calling looked to be the best that I've seen from our OC'S since they were given the job as our OC'S to me, and I saw every play that we made, and the good more than out weighed the bad. We were without any doubts the best team in college FB for the 2018 season...

Our Clemson Tigers proved that we were the best team in 2018 by the way we beat down the third best team in the undefeated Notre Dame Fighting Irish by the score of 30-3, and the second best team in the undefeated Alabama Crimson Tide by the score of 44-16. The Clemson Fighting Tigers beat both of those two undefeated teams back to back in a 9 day period. I could be wrong, but I think that was the first time that a #2 team in the country has beat the #1 and the #3 undefeated teams back to back in a 9 day period and won the National Championship in a 15-0 undefeated season. Yep, I think that our offense was pretty balanced last season, the defense was pretty successful also. Our coaches took our team and proved that Clemson FB belongs to be talked about with the best of them in college FB history!!! IMO, we were pretty balanced!!!

I thought we were extremely well balanced last season, too

Apr 2, 2019, 4:35 PM

but there's no questioning Elliott's point about the 2017 team.

This is a new team with some new faces and he wants to make very sure they understand you can't just live off explosive plays. I'm sure the coaches will hold up the 10 minute drive at the end of the NC game as an example of being 'efficient' when you need to be.

So much to appreciate about Coach Elliott — still Coach speak is always alive and well at this time of year with good reason. Spring practice coach speak is predictable but not nearly as egregious as Presidential primary debate speak ... thankfully.
