It seems to be a pride issue with him. This is how we do,it, and we,arent changing except under exceptional circumstances. And you know, maybe that's ok. He has built,a family structure, so we don't always pick the "best (highest rated) player, we pick the best for us. We don't have divas, we have team guys. That being said, we used to be able to coach the best out of our guys, so 3 stars played like 5s. Can we still? I'm a Dabo fan. Is he perfect? No one is. Hes my man for coach of Clemson. Go Tigers!

Dabo is a lot like tnet. Gets very defensive and comes across as insecure when asked a question. Automatic deem is questioning a process or decision. And automatically jumps to the conclusion that said question is negative or some nefarious hidden agenda. When in fact, it's just a question. Although knowing him, he's probably the most secure person I know... so it can be a headscratcher.
As for not using the portal, he obviously knows some kids are coming back. If not, we'll have holes. Sure, bodies are there but it's a bit of inexperience and a talent issue also.

I don't know if we will continue to decline, obviously, but based on the data he just showed, yes that is a decline. I don't see how else you spin it?
I personally don't think we will continue to decline but I don't think we reach apex again with the way things are going.

I have said this several times. It is a numbers game. The portal is a much smaller pool of players than HS. Narrow it down to the position you have a need for, then narrow it down to players who want to come to Clemson (in most likely a backup role) and the resulting pool to choose from becomes very small. It’s not like being able to choose from every high school in the country. That being said, it seems like a lot of WRs went into the portal this year and I’m a little surprised none of them have turned out to be a fit. It seems like that position fits Dabo’s description of a situation where he might use the portal.

Just shaking my head at this point. if this is the case then fire Pearman already and throw his salary in the NIL kitty or build a second slide. At least we'd have to something to show for that $250k.

Time and losses will tell. We're still competitive in the ACC, but the ncaa landscape has changed a lot. In this age of NIL and transfer free agency, our model will be sorely tested. But I'm still riding with the Captain.

I think NIL is a much bigger challenge for us than the portal. Without rules, many of the top recruits will simply decide based on who can throw the most money at them. All of the other intangibles that used to work in Clemson's favor now become less meaningful as these dollars grow.

BINGO!!! You hit the nail on the head slwcu79!!! The NIL $$$ are our biggest enemy. The portal potty is more of a nucense than anything else. Somehow we've got to be able to find the $$$ for these NIL players... otherwise we are going to miss out on them.

If there’s an argument to be made that Clemson cannot compete with the big boys regarding how much NIL we can offer a transfer player, then why not do things differently like he’s doing.
Under this approach and with the trend that each year many players who enter the transfer portal are not picked up by another school, then it might lead to fewer and fewer of our players wanting to leave for the portal since there would be loyalty in both directions between the players and the school. Then they would be guys that came to Clemson not for the NIL immediate handout but for the school itself. Very much, all-in.

Like that. We are losing a good many guys to the portal. Everyone thinks its no big deal because they weren't starters, but they were quality depth and developmental guys who could have stepped up as upper classman (ala Cornell Powell, Kevin Dodd, Jaron Brown, Ruke, etc..)

Noticed the key phrase in your post: “ … so far it’s not playing out.”
In 2022, scads of OK players everywhere (players that could be called developmental) hit the portal.
Many of those from the Power 5 schools will end up playing for small school dead end programs or worse.
This statistic will prove to be sobering to most, with exception being those who are either especially stupid or exceptionally delusional.
2023 will see far fewer developmental players hitting the portal.
Your “ … so far … “ phrase will prove to be prophetic.

Saw this article recently, too. I wonder if UGA boards have the portal fascination, too?
"Unlike other schools, Kirby Smart and UGA aren't very reliant on the transfer portal. That is a credit to their recruiting at the high school level, but also to their player development. Every now and then, UGA will add a player through the portal to help bridge a gap at a certain position, but the focus is always on recruiting high school prospects at an elite level.
"However, nothing is off limits in regard to UGA and a future national championship run. If they find someone in the portal that can help them win, they will get him.
Isn't this pretty much what CDS just said, too?

Good Point! Unfortunately a lot of opinions are results based. When people aren't pleased with what they are seeing everything comes under questioning. If we went 12-0 each of the last two years it'd be much less talk of Transfer Portal, NIL, QB Play, Coordinators, Etc.

It is perfectly okay to have CDS approach. I mean the guy has taken us to heights we never imagined in 2012 even. However, a few points I wish are considered:
1. Right now our ‘brand’ allows us to cherry pick with the rest of the blue bloods to get really solid players wanting to experience winning.
2. We are losing our depth bc they want to play and honestly there’s better guys in front of them.
3. High schoolers in most cases are not ready to be thrown in the two-deep.
4. The ACC is getting better in the NIL/portal era and you can’t expect to just catch up when constantly stating an aversion to it.
5. Lastly, I do trust CDS to keep us relevant. Just tone down the rhetoric that he espouses when asked about it. Just do what you do and if it works…it works.

This seems like the DJ situation all over again. Dabo has decided what he thinks and no amount of evidence will change his mind. Unfortunately it may take the program going into a ditch for him to change his mind. I mean its not like the players buy this nonsense. We are losing guys just like everybody else so they clearly aren't sticking around due to our portal policy.

The portal is more for a new program and coach coming in and trying to build something quick. Bama and Georgia don't need to use it that much because they are loaded across the board and Clemson is similar. You fellas also don't get it. The portal is also partly about cheating and Dabo isn't going to go Charlie Pell on you. There's some honesty going on and players wanting a fresh start, but there's also some money going out to cheat. NIL and portal is just legalized cheating, mostly. Again, there's some back ups that are transferring for playing time, but is that who you really want? How many top players are going to be there and available for a Clemson? There's the occasional guy at a Wyoming or less significant school that wants to try his hand at the big time. But, mostly it's the guy that didn't pan out. Recruiting is full of overrated high school kids that don't work out at the school, or they have poor attitudes and work ethic.
I'm going to keep the rest of my opinion to myself right now.

How did he "get defensive"
Dec 22, 2022, 10:42 AM
|

He just anweredthe question with an explanation. I guess just a yes or no would have not shown as being "defensive". Replying to a question with an answer you don't like doesn't mean he was annoyed or defensive. It means you didn't like his answer which he's stated a thousand times.
Even before the portal we had guys transfer out every year and yes in about the same numbers. It was just done in a different time of the year usually after spring. Transfers, guys leaving early and grads are going to be roughly the exact same for us a they would be during any year prior to the portal. We've filled those needs with kids recruited from the HS ranks, not JUCOs, not grad transfers. If you can still fill your roster with guys you recruit from the HS classes and your roster doesn't dictate that you have numbers to fill then why do you need to dip into the portal, why not do what he's always done and give that 1 or 2 leftover scholarships to a deserving walk-on.
You guys screaming about using the portal are not getting the numbers game. If you bring them in you gotta put them on scholarship. If your scholarship allotment is full or you have 1 or 2 free, where do you put them. You don't, you let them stay in the portal.
You guys act like Dabo is a first year coach who doesn't have a clue as to what he's doing. The man is without a doubt one of the top 3 coaches in this country, a first ballot hall of fame football coach who's won 2 NCs and umpteen conference championships. His players love him, the coaches love him. Do you think he just got up one day and said I think I'll just run this whole thing in the ditch.

If Dabo is infallible, why'd he stick with Stoudt, DJ, Ashe?
Dec 23, 2022, 3:00 AM
|
|
Do you think he just got up one day and said I think I'll just run this whole thing in the ditch.
No. He does a lot of thing right, and has been very successful, but he makes. Sometimes he fixes the mistakes. Sometimes he repeatedly makes the same mistakes, like wasting nepotism scholarships on coaches' and friends-and-family kids Amir Trapp, Batson, Brian Dawkins, Jr., his sons, et al, or like being too loyal to inferior upperclassmen instead of playing superior underclassman. (E.g. Playing Stoudt over Watson-- which cost us a loss to FSU and an ACC crown, or like being loyal to DJ over Klubnik, which cost us a state title and a playoff berth, or being loyal to Ashe over Nuk Hopkins, which cost us a loss to Auburn and handed them a natty that the could use to recruit against us.)
E.g. We were obviously going to be thin at WR this year but Dabo failed to recruit a high-character graduate-transfer from Duke (Jake Bobo) from the portal, and so Bobo went to UCLA, where he killed it.

It appears most players in the portal that we'd want are looking to cash out and Clemson isn't going to play that game.
Honestly, it was a head scratcher before of why we weren't being more aggressive in the portal but now it makes complete sense to me.
Call it an ego move or a smart one but Dabo has a good point here. Portal players are either looking for a payday and/or a good chance or winning a starting spot somewhere else.
Not many positions are going to be up for grabs at Clemson most years of we keep recruiting well. And Clemson isn't getting caught in a bidding war for any good -to- great players and honestly I'm fine with that.
Let others waste money - gimme the dudes that wanna wear orange without being a paid mercenary.

What happened with the CB out of UVa? I am not saying that we are in desperate shape at the corner, but he sounded like a good player and a good fit, and the CB position was the weakest on the defense this year.

What do you propose as a serious approach to modern CFB, especially with respect to roster management for numbers of HS recruits vs portal players?
Recruit fewer HS players in hopes that we can find a suitable offsetting number of portal players?
Recruit a full complement of HS players, and then start revoking scholarship offers from those HS as desirable portal candidates become available?
Surely you have a deeper idea about the tactics which you would use to fulfill your vision of modern college football.

Once again, you posed an illogical, proven-false choice. There is no need to ignore or renege on recruits who signed. Dabo didn't ignore or renege on any recruits in order to take Hunter Johnson or Paul Tyson, nor when he pursued OLs earlier this year. So, obviously it's possible to take HS recruits AND portal players without reneging on the HS recruits.
It's sad that you issue puerile insults, instead of simply posting your opinion like a civil adult.

You categorized my suggestions as ridiculous, but did not offer a meaningful retort other than to ignore the tactical aspects / risk components of the portal approach.
Advice: If you choose to call someone ridiculous, then don’t be surprised if you get insulted in return.
By suggesting that UGA’s or Bama’s approach to the portal is something that Clemson can duplicate is just not true.
UGA and BAMA have much broader appeal to the overall population of HS players than does Clemson.
Dumb ones, smart ones, short-sighted ones, long-term thinkers, etc. all like UGA and BAMA. Clemson can only consistently compete with the UGA’s and Bama’s with the smart, long term thinker sub-set.
We will ruin our ‘culture’ reputation with the smart & long term thinker subset if (when) HS recruits & verbal commits learn that we are recruiting lots of portal players in hopes of filling a key playing role with a portal player instead of with that HS recruit. Those HS players will lose interest in us.
For those schools whose programs had been mired in mediocrity, then sure … not much to lose with HS recruits that already don’t think highly of them (re: TN, FSU, aTm, etc.) by going all out via the portal. Sometimes it works (TN this year; we’ll see about next year) and sometimes it doesn’t (TN last year).
Since we are not UGA or BAMA, we must tread very carefully about using the portal extensively.

I did not call YOU ridiculous. I said that the false-choices you posed are ridiculous. You retorted with puerile, ad hominem insults.
I did not "suggest that UGA’s or Bama’s approach to the portal is something that Clemson can duplicate". You should try replying to what I wrote, instead of concocting crap to shove in my mouth and then arguing against crap that I didn't say.
I said that you offered provably false-choices. And I offered proof... Dabo brought in Hunter Johnson and Paul Tyson. Doing so didn't cause Dabo to renege on any scholarship offers to recruits or to destroy the culture. Right? But you didn't address that proof. Instead you argued against stuff that I didn't say. Classic.

Programs promoting the NIL money in football to incoming freshmen remind me of the one-and-done programs in college basketball. Yes, they get the talent, but each year we see teams in the tournament full of juniors and seniors that compete and quite often win it all.
I also think a program like ours that promotes culture will have deeper talent for those late season runs in college football. It’s a long season and you need players with multiple years in your program to play significant minutes down the stretch.
I feel good about Dabo’s strategy and am very proud of the program he’s built. Wins and losses are one of, but not the most, important measure of our program.
Go Tigers.

Yeah let’s keep replacing veteran players that transfer out each year with a bunch of true freshmen and walk-ons! Great strategy Dabo! And to those who say that UGA and Bama don’t use the transfer portal… are you serious? Have you ever heard of Jameson Williams, Henry To’oto’o, Derion Kendrick (obvious one), JT Daniels, Arik Gilbert, and until last night UGA was trying to lure Travis Hunter from Jackson State. Alabama and UGA 100% use the transfer portal and bring in impact players by using it! Dabo is a stubborn fool for his refusal to be active in the transfer portal. There are plenty of great players in the portal every single year that can help Clemson win now while enabling the younger guys to develop.

Care to speculate about how much $$$ that UGA and BAMA funnel via NIL deals to these high end portal / transfer players?
Do you believe that no money is involved?
Do you believe that Clemson should try to out bid BAMA and UGA?
Using examples such as Derion Kendrick, do you believe that team conduct rules should be repeatedly overlooked for star players so that those star players are never punished via game suspensions (which is why D.Kendrick left as and went to UGA)?
Please share the details about how to execute your brilliant strategy.

Care to speculate about how much $$$ that UGA and BAMA funnel via NIL deals to these high end portal / transfer players? No. Do you have any evidence of the numbers?
Do you believe that no money is involved? Maybe. Do you have any evidence it was involved, couldn't have been countered, or was decisive?
Do you believe that Clemson should try to out bid BAMA and UGA? Do you know that Clemson needs to?
Using examples such as Derion Kendrick, do you believe that team conduct rules should be repeatedly overlooked for star players so that those star players are never punished via game suspensions (which is why D.Kendrick left as and went to UGA)? Did anybody say that Kendrick shouldn't have been dismissed? Or did people simply say that the portal should be utilized?
Please share the details about how to execute your brilliant strategy. Recruit HS kids to the best of Clemson's ability, but aggressively try to fill holes from the portal.

Kendrick … Tatermartell referenced Kendrick as one who UGA got in the portal as context for the players that we don’t pursue via the portal. You defend him by arguing about my example … weird.
BAMA and NIL bidding … Jimbo Fisher blasted back at Sagan as being a hypocrite after Sagan accused Fisher of using NIL $$$ to get last year’s top recruiting class. Jimbo might be a dirt bag, but he isn’t stupid. He would not accuse anyone of NIL bribery (i.e., not wanting to proactively bring attention to himself) other than to counter attack someone who accused him of doing it.
I’ve answered other parts of your questions in this post via a response to your previous post.

Derion Kendrick is simply one example of a player who UGA used the transfer portal to sign. Why did UGA sign him? Because they desperately needed CB depth, which he ended up being a key player who helped them win a national title last year. Sure Derion had discipline issues at Clemson, so clearly I did not use him as an example of a player that Clemson should’ve pursued in the portal, but he did help UGA fill a significant need and win a Natty. Clemson could and should use the portal to sign players who can fill immediate needs rather than relying relying on true freshmen to do that. I.e. do you honestly think starting Blake Miller this year instead of bringing in an experienced OL from the portal was a great decision?
If you’re ok with Dabo’s extreme nepotism and refusal to adapt to the modern college football landscape then I hope you’re also ok with the program regressing back to the Tommy Bowden days. Back to going 9-3 while playing in the worst Power 5 conference and never sniffing the playoffs!!!

Dumb ###…we dreamed of 9 win seasons when Bowden was here. I bet you didn’t start pulling for Clemson until mid-season 2015.

Really shocked he didn’t try to bring in a couple of WRs as deep as the portal was. Maybe Randall develops? But that hasn’t been the trend there lately. But I’m certainly glad he’s sticking to his guns!

Considering the projected WR depth this past season, how did Dabo not pursue high-character, smart, Duke graduate-transfer WR Jake Bobo, who killed it at UCLA and will probably play in the NFL?
