With that group, it will be hard for Spiller to make the WRONG decision.

I name Dixon and Pace 1A and 1B; try to get them both 12 carries a game. Sprinkle the hot hand in behind them.

Dixon got passed, IMHO.
Pace is better. Mafah's better. Mellusi's better. Shipley's better.
Dixon is a solid back, has a chance at the League, IMHO, and will certainly be in somebody's camp as an OFA at the very least. But...he's probably the fifth-best back at Clemson right now.
Those are called "Uptown Problems".
If I'm Lyn-J, I might consider making a business decision. You're a talented dude, but that's a mighty rough-looking depth chart.

Sometimes it's just bad luck for some of these players when it comes to playing time. Dixon is talented enough that not very long ago he would've been the unquestioned starter here and probably been considered as one of our top 5-10 running backs in school history. He just had the misfortune of coming here at a time where we had arguably our best running back in school history for his first 3 years here, and is now surrounded by a ton of other talented players at his position.

LJ is a good back - maybe top 30-40 of all time at Clemson. Concur he has and will be passed by 1-3 this year, but the young man is strong and capable.
OL blocking will be the key. Very few backs can survive much less prosper without an OL - young versions of Earl Campbell, Adrian Peterson and Barry Sanders come to mind. Looks like Pace, LJ, the two freshmen, then Mellusi for now. A long way to go.

Man, I hope it's Dixon just because he has been here so long and stuck around after Etienne announced he was returning for his senior year. I'd like to see a guy like that rewarded, but the best guy should play and if that's Pace, then Pace needs to play.

Agreed. All of these guys are going to be in the rotation. I think they are going to find creative ways to use Shipley.

One key thing to remember is the ability to pass block is often as big to playing time at the running back position than their ability to run. I'm not sure which of our guys is doing the best there, but that could give one of them the edge if their other abilities are close.

I think that pass blocking mentality probably has hurt Lyn-J. His superpower was as lightning in a bottle. Requiring that every RB block like a fullback to get on the field means a guy like Lyn-J is taking a beating and perhaps adding weight that he shouldn't.
Not that i know anything, it just seems like there are risks in harnessing the show horse to the plow.
All the best to CJ! If anyone can walk the tightrope between protecting the QB without squandering RB talent, it should be him.

Translation: LJD won't be the starter
Apr 9, 2021, 9:49 AM
|
|
Dabo is prepping everyone for when LJD is not named the starter.
This isn't rocket science. IMO, Pace gets the first carry against UGA and LJD is the first sub that comes in. Out of respect, I just can't see them starting Dixon off lower than 2nd string.
Pace and the additions of Mafah and Shipley make me feel good about the position. I also actually believe Mellusi might be better than Dixon.

Wonder if Bowman would still the be unquestioned starter if he remained on the team?

The sting of Bowman leaving is pretty much gone since it's apparent our run game won't depend on LJD.
We'll be fine after all.

Hard to say. But rest assured Clemson fans will compare our starter to how well Bowman does in Gainesville. Per recruiting so-called experts, Shipley is in the same league. TBD.

Just name all that he intends to play co starters. Or take what you believe to be your best two, and start the game in a two back set. There are ways to not make one or the other to not feel dis-ed!!!

Unlike last year when the best running back in the history of the ACC was wasted, we need to find a beast and feed him and keep feeding him.

It’s the Clemson way. We reward guys like him. Others will play so it will not be like ETN sucking up most of the plays due to his immense talent.
Also, don’t forget the big moments LJD has delivered.
