Potential flaws for each national title contender: Clemson

We know about the strengths of college football’s national championship contenders, but in this three-part series we’ve zoomed in on their potential flaws and weaknesses. We started with Alabama and Georgia and then looked at Ohio State, Penn State, and Oklahoma. We’ll end by looking at the Clemson Tigers.

Amari needs to take this article, highlight the section about him and go out and dominate like he knows he can. Reduced to an afterthought at the end of the article?

Poetic justice would be to autograph it and send it to the author at the end of the season.

Do not underestimate him. His resolve, will and ability has only begun to be tapped.

When we won the championship in 2018 Ross was a freshmen. So are we saying that our sophomore receivers are not as talented? They have more game experience than Ross had. Just wondering. Remember, Leggett under achieved until his time came. Let’s hope others do the same this year.

Ross was a freshman but we also had Tee, Renfrow, Amari plus other seasoned receivers. The point is we do not have a single experienced receiver for the alpha position...

The writer mentions the lack of yardage our back-ups had, but with Ross & Tee there weren't many opportunities. Maybe TL won't get tunnel vision forcing it to one receiver like he did vs LSU....

Amari is never going to be WR1

It doesn't mean he can't be really good, but we should be hoping for Amari to produce like Artavis Scott and not Nuk, Sammy, Mike, or Tee. His role just needs to be different.

Moving the chains. Do that and you likely will not lose with just a good defense. It doesn’t have to be a big time wide receiver like Higgins or Williams were. Renfro and Leggett did a lot more than their share in winning games for the Tigers. The skills of Lawrence will pay big dividends and the talent is already in place. Good coaching will allow the passing game to work. Giving Lawrence time to get his throws off is paramount. The Tigers did not do that against LSU and believe me, opponents saw it too.

I just hope the season is played. I’m very very concerned about that.

Maybe I glossed over the article but not a single word noted to describe a deficiency or flaw as to defense or special teams?? We dangummit better have football this fall!

ST flaws. We finish toward the bottom of D1 in STE every single year.

Special teams have seldom been above average during this run, but it obviously hasn't been too much to overcome (2015 loss was certainly impacted by that, but I'd say DB busts and the Mac Alexander injury were bigger)

“Clemson wasn’t that much better with Trevor Lawrence, if at all.”

I'm curious to see how Amari does this year now fully recovered from the knee injury. We've seen games where he just dominated (Syracuse last year, FSU the year before). I thought he could step into Renfrow's slot position and go crazy, but I have read that he's more comfortable outside.

I'm really looking to see which (hopefully both) of the Sophomore guys take that next step up. Both Ladson and Ngata have the potential, and each showed flashes last year. Opportunity knocks. Will these guys answer?

I like the way ETN's game has evolved. His performance (2 TD catches) was lethal, and he could present a lot of matchup problems in the passing game. I think he's earned TLaw's trust, and with Travis he needs a quick catch, make one guy miss and he can score from anywhere.

Will we have a tight end who can catch and create advantages in the middle of the field? I'd like to see our offense take more over the middle this year instead of deferring to what the defense gives us outside.

Powell supposedly had a great spring. If he keeps working he could show out and make himself some money this year.

A valid concern but I agree, we have time for development. I'm only worried about ND and potential playoffs where even with the big two last year we got man-handled when it came to playing physical DB's.
