I'm a little confused. Back during summer camp and shortly thereafter, when @ClemsonPaw was writing articles, the general consensus was 18-19 taken this class. That was well before the 4 transfers. Then before Jake, Johnson, and Mario et al. So if 18 was the target before, that's at least 7 that wasn't in play at that time. Thanks.

There is a chart. From the front page select the football drop down then click on Scholarships.

Yeah im so lost on these numbers. Some teams take 23+ every season. 85 / 4 = 21.25. We have a ton of transfers and such and we are still at 19? (I know the super seniors play into this too but we almost need a chart. (maybe ill make one)

you can't divide by 4 to get the average- you're not

considering RS if you do that. There are essentially 5 classes on scholarship at a time that count against the 85(not including the extra year covid guys that don't count). The difference is other schools have always forced attrition. Clemson never forced attrition via oversigning. Pre-portal this didn't really impact us because we rarely had natural attrition(especially with guys who hadn't graduated already). What has a lot of fans upset regarding the portal is as soon as the portal rules and covid rules came into play(even before that when the NCAA was no longer making guys sit a year), many fans saw exactly the problem that this would create yet the coaching staff knew things were changing but thought they could continue to do things they have always done. The injuries this year hopefully serve as a blessing in disguise as it at least Dabo now is at least talking a little different about the portal. He has to act though, we're already a couple of years behind everyone else which is never a good place to be on change.

I don't understand your comment about being a couple of years behind.
As long the roster if full, it doesn't matter where the players come from.
It's not as if there are points given to teams who use the portal that allow them to go to the front of the line in the future.
If Clemson needs to fill 20 spots and does so, then it doesn't matter one bit if it comes from high school recruits or the portal.
The end game is keeping the roster depth, not falling in line to do things the exact way everybody else has decided to do it.
Clemson's roster isn't full. We need to offer and take more guys, but it doesn't matter where they come from and all it takes is one class the erase the problem.

other programs have been doing it - some very successfully

that becomes known to others looking to transfer and they are comfortable going there. Those programs have already learned some do's and don'ts just like in anything you do. And yes it matters if all you are doing is constantly have a young team every year by the revolving door and only getting HS. 1/3 of which you will end up training for someone else's program. You either make someone else your farm system or somebody else will make you their's....

You are insane if you think 1/3 of every recruiting class at Clemson is going to be headed for the portal.
If that becomes the case, then it doesn't matter how hard we hit the portal the program will fall apart.
I think you are getting mixed up in the age of teams this season and assuming that will become the norm because of the portal.
The less-talented experienced teams this season are largely due to the extra year of eligibility.
5th and 6th year players across our schedule have highlighted Clemson's youth far more than opponents bringing in transfers that have outdone our youth.
When Clemson starts losing starters to other teams, then you can call us their farm system. At this point, Clemson is losing guys who are buried on the depth chart. Outside of Mellusi, few have made any impact at their destination school.
At this point the only player I feel anyone could look toward as hurting a future Clemson team would be Tchio since OL is typically a position where age plays much better.
As we have seen with the young DL, RBs, and WRs, young talent serves you very well as depth because they can be grown while they play.
Specifically Mafah, Collins, and Collins have done everything and more than what some 3 star transfer could have done filling in behind our injuries and transfers.

The scholarship number blurb is not new news as I have been saying for weeks that in the age of the portal that anyone who thinks they have an available number today can be wrong tomorrow. Life in the recruiting war room is just a whole different game today.

The blurb on scholarship numbers is not new news. I have been saying for weeks that anyone who thinks they know how many scholarships are available is just wrong. In this age of the portal, not even Dabo or any other coach knows today because the number could be different tomorrow.

Nobody here cares about the actual game? Should be in Clemson and it's not our fault the SEC didn't want to get beaten again last year.
The lame ##### have one of the worst offenses in college football and a very average defense. But, you can throw out the numbers in a rivalry game sometimes. The lames will play their little hearts out and that scary mean ole rooster will be crowing in the background all game long.

I'm missing something? Where is the article on Dabo's comments last night, and who is leaving and who is giving up football from that list of 5 players?
