defense definitely streaky

Oct 25, 2022, 7:32 AM

I am not full of tons of knowledge about football schemes, simply a huge fan. But I do see that our D works well, then doesn't. I cant tell you why, I simply see it. Maybe y'all can tell me. Why didn't we do what we did in the second half shutout in the first half?

Syracuse, and most other teams on the schedule, don't have the same depth. The defense rotates 7 or 8 guys on the defensive line all game. Later in the game, the opposing team starts to wear down.

So are we! If both our offense and defense ever put together a full 60 minute game we can beat anybody in the country.

Dabo has always been good about getting our Tigers to peak at the right time and it really feels to me that we are heading towards playing lights out football in championship season.

good game and improved as they went. still a good mobile qb gives us some trouble and we never seem able to contain them as well as you would like. Syracuse was a very sure tackling D. Our tackling seems much more iffy though I'm sure I remember our misses more than theirs.

interview process goes. He is a completely different guy now in post game encounters with reporters compared to early in the year. That increased sense of calm confidence is rubbing off on the team, too. Good things ahead.

The main thing I've noticed is the lack of pressure and blitzes in the 1st half, it's like he waits til the 2nd half every time to start bringing pressure. The defense use to always set the tone in the 1st half and allowing us to get that 2-3 TD lead by the half. Overall they still played well and didn't allow a single point for 3 qtrs. Plus maybe now the refs will start calling more holding calls that has been allowing teams to get garbage points from keeping drives alive.

I wonder....

If he's afraid to blitz bc that we are "somewhat susceptible" against the screen?...

???

Ever wonder what it would look like if they didn't call holding? Look at our DL which by recruiting rank has likely been far and away superior to that of the OL they have faced so far.

Clemson has the 5th fewest yards for opponents. Which simply means; they don't pull the flag out when opponents are breaking the rules against us.

Like DL being held!

They will, however, call D.P.I on Clemson's hand over fist and until the cows come home.

If they call it as it should be; I think you will see the defense make the impact we thought they would make! Everything starts up front; their not being done right affects everything else.

The main thing I noticed is second half adjustments seem to always work. I like that about him but what does it say about the plan you put in place the entire week. Need some 1st half adjustments. Or maybe kids need a kick in the a$$ at halftime.

I agree. The halftime adjustments seem to be spot on in most cases, Wake is the exception. He said he is comfortable with the plan going into the game but it seems like that is where we are lacking. The first quarter is not like it use to be as far as how dominant our D was.

I also agree that holding calls are rarely called. Rewatch the first half of the Cuse game. Not 1 holding call but at least one obvious hold every series. In fact the first series when Murphy gets called for face mask. He’s held all the way to the QB. Should have been offsetting fouls.

I applaud our D-line for not giving up as it has to be extremely frustrating. And poor old Blake Miller he gets called for holding even when he’s adjusting his own junk.

I think Goodwin needs to eliminate the zone defense. There is no team remaining on our schedule that has an offense that is a major threat passing the ball. Just stick to the man to man in the secondary.
