Hopefully Goodwin progressing too. He should have plenty of film on Wake to game plan. If starters are all back, I feel good about the direction we are heading. Although room for improvement, defense definitely looked better overall last night.

Missing so many players that play starter minutes has to impact the communication at least some. I have to think that the number of different players playing and lack of continuity that causes has a huge part in why we have given up some chunk plays.

Still, I am very pleased with the performance of the team as a whole - but especially the defense so far!

No rings are given out in September! How are we playing in November and beyond will be the test.

My concern is if this is supposedly one of our best defenses ever, why are we struggling to improve week by week? Where’s the dominant will over opponents that should be easily attained? No not a coot, wren grad and fan for life but starting to wonder why we are having such a hard time living up to the hype.

We are improving from week to week.

La Tech was our first "Air Raid" opponent, and the D's backups and FRs played a lot.

Our offense was clearly better; LA Tech is a better team (with a better D) than Furman.

GA Tech was our best defense opponent of the year; maybe the improvement that we've seen in Blake Miller has something to do with less talented D-Ends. But for sure, B.Miller sure looks dramatically improved vs. his first game beatings.

If we can figure out a way for Shipley to be effective (not necessarily great, but just effective) at pass blocking, then our offense will truly flourish.

Read HillRock's post. We have been playing a revolving door of players on defense. I believe that some is by necessity due to injuries, but a lot of it is so that players get experience and stay focused. The product on the field might not be quite as good, but it will make us a better team down the road.

A lot of times you will hear people talk about playing down to your opponent, but that isn't entirely true. Coaches use games like our last couple to experiment and get backups involved. They won't pull out some things that they are confident will work, because there is no need to show their cards so to speak. Look for a tighter rotation and an improved defense over the next couple of weeks despite the quality of opponent increasing.

We are going to find out how good we are over the next 5 weeks. Starting with Wake on the road and NC State at home. The FSU game scares me because the Noles are much better and will look for revenge. Our defense MUST play better and our offensive line and QB play will have to be more consistent.

Someone please tell Wes that his response to every question should not begin with "Yeah...". Here are some suggestions: Well..., Not really..., Absolutely..., Maybe..., Good question..., Stupid question..., Right..., Sure..., and many more.

We seem more vanilla on defense without BV. Not as much pre snap movement, nothing exotic…we kind of just line up and show our hand.

BV used to switch plays late (which did burn us a few times), but it seemed to cause more chaos…sacks, turnovers, etc.

We will see…

I love the way the team is shaping up this year. The notable exception on defense other than the corners getting picked on is the fact that they rarely make a stop on initial contact, in fact, it takes 2,3, even 4 times to stop the opponent.

I remember Dabo getting upset at the defenses execution by failing to, in his words "wrap up the opponent" on initial contact.

Edit above: This was a few years ago that I remember his comment about wrapping up the opponents on first contact.

I simply want our receivers to get wide open, like our opponents seem to do.

Does anyone have a date that most of the defensive starters will return?

According to recent interviews I believe they are expecting all hands on deck this weekend…maybe without XT…I know he’s one of the guys traveling to Ella’s funeral…he may be back but limited..but aside from him, we should be full strength.
