That will be great but it isn’t the key to making the playoff. We could beat GA and still not make the playoff. Need to beat FSU and win the ACC championship if we want to be in the playoff.

If we beat Georgia, then go 11-1 losing only to FSU in Doak Campbell, it would be hard to deny us a playoff berth, wouldn’t it? Unless FSU beats us soundly, which ain’t gonna happen in their best dream.

We're Clemson addicts, to be fair!
Not everyone is aware of how competitive the teams are (or aren't) for both teams' schedules, or the schedules leading up to this game, or the lack of bye-week opponents again for us this year, etc.
Sometimes the obvious is necessary is all, especially in a world with a new playoff system & no longer having divisions.
I agree that FSU is likely the most competitive in-league team on the schedule for us, I just don't think it matters as FSU's schedule is vastly more difficult & I think they'll lose twice as many games as Clemson.

That was very kind of him to say the Georgia game is a tossup. But he is correct. It’s going to hinge on beating Florida State and not having any stupid losses like last year when we dropped games to Duke and NC State and Miami.
And in the end, it’s going to come down to how much cade and the offensive line and the new wide receivers can produce

Agreed! I don’t have the level of delusion required to believe we can beat Georgia in an opener.

Making the playoffs is more dependent on beating FSU in Charlotte. If we beat them in Tally but don't win the conference, I'm not sure we're inside the bubble.

Yep, we could lose to UGA and then to FSU in Doak. If we're 10-2 with only one ACC loss, we'll be playing in Charlotte. Win that game and we're in the playoffs at 11-2 as ACC Champs.

In that event (winning in Charlotte and finishing 10-2), we would get an automatic bid as ACC champs. No need to rely on the committee except for seeding.

Same as every other year. Gotta win the ACC championship to have a chance at the playoffs. For years I waited until after the FSU game to buy ACC championship tickets. I guess it is a little different now without the divisions. We could lose to FSU in the regular season and end up playing them again in the ACCCG but I’ll feel a lot better about it if we beat them in the regular season.

You're exactly right, rhettfla.
What's even more wild is we could theoretically face FSU 3 times in the same season.
Winning that first one may be determinant, but either of the next two would absolutely be determinant by rule. We can afford to lose the first one (but I sincerely doubt we do anything other than win anyway).

We were one play from the playoff for two years but next year with an expanded playoff & no divisions why do some people insist Clemson likely won't improve & consequently can't make the playoff, especially with out schedule?
I don't get that at all. We have 4 true road games, no bye-week opponents, no trips to CA, no ND, etc.
I'm picking Clemson to make it to the ACC title game, and that game is almost certainly a win-and-you're-in game for the new playoff system just by nature if not by (implied) rule.

Ummm, call me a diehard Clemson fan with orange colored glasses, but we have a shot at beating Georgia. First, our defense should be able to keep us in any game. Second, it’s their first game, too, and will have issues to work out just like any team will in their opener. Third, I believe our OL will be improved as will the QB.
Cade doesn’t have to throw for 300 yards nor does Mafah have to rush for 150. We just need to protect the ball on offense and do just enough to win.
Georgia will be favored, but we can win if we don’t turn the ball over like we did so many times last year.

Should have beat them last year with our young bucks vs their best senior heavy team in years. They were very luck to walk away with the win.

I disagree FSU is the outlier, but they may be the 2nd-most competitive ACC team
Feb 19, 2024, 8:41 PM

Great point, but I'd put it on FSU instead of Clemson; the Seminoles have a vastly more difficult schedule while our toughest in-league game is this one with FSU.
Outside of that, however, I see more losses for FSU outright than for the Tigers, notably both with schedule strength & us having zero opponents coming off a bye-week again. FSU has 4 consecutive games including Norvell's former Memphis team & a Cal team that only lost one game at home last year, plus at a high-tempo SMU the week before hosting Clemson (we have Stanford at home, a much more favorable setup).
To Greg's point, FSU is the most competitive ACC team on the schedule & may win a share of the ACC, but at this point I sincerely doubt it as I see 3-4 losses for FSU this year & a 10-2 Clemson team is likely in the playoff with a win in the ACC title game.

I think FSU will be pretty good. I could see both FSU and Clemson at 10-2 and playing in the ACC Championship game. If that happens, it'll essentially be a play-in game for the playoffs. Regardless of what FSU does, we just need to handle our own business and finish the regular season at no worse than 10-2.

I'm actually with Greg here that Clemson has a great chance to win the ACC & consequently make the playoff & their chances & favorability will dramatically increase with a win in Tallahassee.

Clemson, FSU, and every other ACC team has the same path to the playoffs - Win in Charlotte in December.
Every other game will be irrelevant if the team loses in Charlotte.
Theoretically, Clemson could lose to FSU and go 9-3 in the regular season. Win in Charlotte and they are in. Or, Clemson could go 12-0 in regular season, beating FSU, then lose in Charlotte and they would still be left of out of playoffs.
