BS excuse for a bad decision. Senior pitcher who is likely not going to pitch professionally. He’d thrown bullpens and was allegedly ready to go last week. Should have stayed in as Mastehdt had been trash the last few weeks against lefties

no way..... His stuff isn't great and no fastball at all. The bottom half of wvu's lineup loved the off speed stuff tonight.

No way. In Greenville for low A maybe??. All of his pitches have a ris. Swing at the best and crush them. Malsted is good. But not elite. His stats were misleading.

You’re right single A or the Savannah Bananas can always use an average reliever

You said “he won’t pitch professionally” Single A is professional, no?
He will get drafted, I’d bet any sum of money on it. Who the heck knows what happens after that. If he was a lefty with that windup he’d have a much better shot.

Apologies, I was talking about Garris at first when I meant he was a senior that likely won’t pitch in the pros. You’re right that A ball is pro ball regardless. I just don’t see either of them having much pro success. I know that angers everyone but of the two, Garris is the better option especially against lefties. That sidearm doesn’t work against lefties especially throwing high eighties maybe low nineties. Not trying to argue or fight here, just calling what I see

Understood, sorry for the snarky response… still pretty PO’d from the results tonight lol.
I think you’re right about Garris, he’s always just been kind of a JAG. I think he’s very effective at this level because he’s older than everyone else and knows how to pitch better than most at this level, but I don’t think he has exceptional stuff. Mahlstedt is interesting and offers something a little wacky so some team will definitely give him a shot, but that slider turns into a flat low 80s fastball when it isn’t working and lefties have just been crushing him lately.

wanting especially after giving up the basehit.
Considering he’s just back especially, there was nothing wrong pulling him for the closer with 4 outs to go.
Hindsight coaching is easy.

Malstehdt has been bad against lefties since the FSU series. He’s at best a ground ball specialist against righties if he goes pro

What has he been watching for the last 5-6 games ? Mahlstedt has been off a little and after pulling McGovern to watch him give up a homer to tie it the day before you would think he would know better . His coaching lately has been ### and anyone that can admit the truth knows it . It was a 2nd straight day of ### coaching decisions and this time it cost the team . Unreal that he has a supposedly great pitching coach in Belanger and a hall of famer in Leggett on staff to advise him yet he pulls stupid moves time after time . All the while he has that stupid grin on his face . This team had a home regional that it should have won and choked away another one . People need to be held accountable and questions answered .

a host position, this team is way over its skis from a w/l perspective that’s due to good coaching not bad. You want to get on this staff it should be on recruiting - we don’t have the horses on the mound or in the batter box to be a national contender.

No, no one would have thought malstadt would have that big of a meltdown. But this is pure BS coachspeak cya 101. Sure you didn't want to overextend garris. But garris said he was fine coach and good to go for another batter. He should have been given that chance. You should own it and say its on me.
Respect and love you coach but you're wrong about this.
Malstadt usually doesn't pitch 2 nights in a row after throwing 45 pitches. The whole season he hasn't done that.
You had other options other than malstadt. Own it. Sorry coach, you blew it on two occasions. One, you should have either pinch hit priest or you should have had him bunt which he's proven he can do.

Not that it really matters, but I think he only threw 20 something pitches last night.
My biggest issue is that we have treated Mahlstedt like he’s Mariano Rivera. He was phenomenal before May 1st, we can all admit that. A 1.29 ERA before May started. Then a 7.62 ERA since May 1st. He’s getting hit and hit hard these last 3-4 weeks.

It was a determination that had already over extended and after giving up the basehit you can definitely justify not leaving him in at that point.
This is one of these hindsight coaching deals. It’s easy to say any coach should have done X instead of Y when the results of X are bad. And at the same time, if Garris did give up the run then all of the hindsight coaches would say, “well he was overworked - we told you to take him out!”.
Backich’s rationale is valid. It sucks it didn’t work out.

I would agree if we were in the regular season. That is a cop out in a regional/playoff setting unless his injury was arm related. He was supposedly available if needed last week which to me means he has thrown multiple bullpens and should be fine to throw multiple innings

Thanks. That's the real point I was trying to make. From best I could tell from reading lips and body expression, garris said I'm good coach... Reed has dealt with back spasms all year and not "from" pitching necessarily. So definitely different from just getting back from arm surgery. So thanks again for a better explanation than mine.
As for the hindsight, a few would have said something if garris had been left in and given up a dinger. Admit i had numbers backwards, McGovern was 45. Mahlstedt was 30. But like other poster said, he's been off for a month.

West Virginia simply out hit and out pitched us. There is a reason they won the Big12 regular season, they are a good team. Flush last night or it will be ugly today against Kentucky.

So obviously pitching is always HUGE BUT not being fully schooled in baseball strategy, I don't understand the lack of a throw to first when they loaded the bases in the 9th. I guess it was supposed to be the "safe" play as the run would have scored from third if he makes the throw BUT the runner is safe. I guess the ball took a high bounce so took extra time to be fielded but still it had to have been 50:50 and worth a shot wasn't it. Hindsight of course....seems a little little like someone taking out their best LB when the opposition is making a late comeback with a running QB. NOBODY would do that right???
