Duke player who grew up a Clemson fan looking forward to Death Valley trip

Coming into Death Valley at night against the second-ranked team in college football is plenty of motivation for the Duke Blue Devils, but for defensive back Lummie Young and linebacker Brandon Hill, there’s a little extra chip for this Saturday’s contest.Photo by Bob Donnan / USATODAY Full Story »

What a great kid. I'm happy for him.

I never understood why Duke doesn't recruit better. They could be Stanford of the East.

Well, Stanford puts 80,000 people in the stands, is not enamored with basketball and has many more students and alumni to support their football program.

I take your point that Stanford draws a bigger crowd than Duke, but it's not 80,000. Stanford's football stadium's capacity is only 50,000.

California *talent*

Cali, Texas, Florida... and even Georgia have the "instate' population to field multiple top-tier programs (thank you Georgia for donating). North Carolina doesn't. We are not a major football hotbed. I am a NC resident now... and yeah, not enough locals that care.

North Carolina can't even protect their talent from the Upstate... and that is a good thing. So having a cluster of 4 ACC schools and then being poached by UT and Clemson of the better talent, the Tobacco road just can't field four teams like Cali can with USC UCLA, Stanford, and Cal... and Washington, Oregon, Boise, Colorado, Utah... etc. Virginia has the same issues, I was always amazed that the number of kids playing at Penn State were from Virginia... that tells me that VT is doing something wrong. So NC programs just do not have that same Gravity to keep the great talent from out-of-state programs and then does not have the population surplus to field multiple teams.

Duke used to be good...

UNCheat, who is 52nd in rushing offense,

Nov 15, 2018, 5:59 PM

ran for 315 yds on Duke last week. We could have 3 or 4 100-yd rushers in this game. Expect a heavy dose of Etienne, Choice, and Feaster.

Well I guess they have the easy part done, and that is talking about what they have to do to beat us. The hard part is doing what they know they will have to do to beat us. Any team can be beat on any given day, but I just don't believe that Saturday will be that given day for Dook if our guys do their jobs as they have done all season!!!

I taught at Westside while Lummie was there. You couldn’t have asked for a better kid. Hope to see him do well. Not win of course, but play well.

I can understand the allure of Duke from an academic standpoint but please don’t try to say say anything about there football program. Until these last few years they were always a sub .500 team and they have an overall losing record. This coach seems to have them going in the right direction but only time will tell if it’s sustainable.

Lummie Young was a great safety at Westside High in Anderson, SC. I was surprised when he didn't receive an offer considering the whole D.W. Daniel team seems to have gotten an offer, but the kid led the state interceptions pacing his team to led the state. We need to pay more attention to those kids down in Anderson. T.L. Hanna and BHP have some great D1 players and I'm sure the coaches know this, but they're not Daniel right.

Well dang...no wonder we can’t win the division, the ACC or any playoff games. Recruiting the wrong kids.
