Things Changed A Wee Bit Regarding Tobacco Use

My grandfather Wylie Hamrick played for Frank Howard from 1944-1948. Back then, my grandfather used to throw a huge plug of chewing tobacco in during the game. He played both offensive and defensive line. So, whenever he would line up across from the opposing player, he would spit tobacco juice in the other lineman's eyes. Once the ball was snapped, he would as he called it, "whop the other fella across the jaw". Football was way different back then. It was a man's sport for sure.

Football has always been violent, but I canāt imagine playing it without padding (ā⦠and he was disfigured for lifeā made me cringe). āAnd only one fight broke out!ā š¤£ Thank you for sharing, David. Canāt wait to read more of these ānumbersā articles as we count down to kickoff.
Also, Iām guessing that Dr. Turnipseed, mentioned in the article, is a descendent of our own Thad Turnipseed? Maybe great-grandfather?

Not sure if he played or not but my wife's relative, T.R. Vogel, was on this team as a manager. I know of a lot of these guys held multiple roles on the teams back then so he may have suited up.

1931 Clemson Football Freshmen. 35 years after the first team. My Granddad is in the middle of the back row with the patch over his eye. No he wasn't blind in one eye and couldn't see out of the other one, it was from a football injury.

I would like to have read some of the good info surrounding Riggs' time at Auburn where he got the ideas for team colors, our mascot, and eventually stealing John Heisman from them. BTW, our original colors were orange and gold unless I'm mistaken.

I just remembered a joke from years ago. The article reminded me... Why was the leper football game canceled? Because there was a hand off on the line. Ba dum bump That is all
