Great article. I’m so glad we got that series locked up. And even if we leave the ACC, that series will still be played. Way to go Neff… and thanks coach Howard for getting it all started. Go Tigers!!!

Along with the revenue based changes in the ACC I think this takes leaving the ACC out of discussion for the foreseeable future. I’m good with that.

We aren't staying in the ACC. Clemson will use these games as leverage to offer to another conference's inventory.

I remember miso of those BIG GAMES, and we got Killed before Pell and Ford showed up with Red Parker’s recruits!
ND in 1977 was a turning point, like Georgia in 1981! ND is a class school, and will be a great rivalry!!

If we don’t join the SEC, our best option is to stay in the ACC. The Big 10 would be an awful mistake in so many ways for all sports, and the University .

Regardless, our ticket prices and IPTAY dues will continue to increase annually to remain competitive.

Go Tigers, Beat LSU!!

they cant completely stop us but they have a some say in it. it's because the only way someone thinks the gamecocks are good is if they are in the SEC and if we join they would not get the excuse

Yes. I believe they need 1/3 of the conference to join in their opposition

Remember, they said the same thing about Texas. That ATM would block them

We see how that turned out.

Smart move by both schools. Elite top 10 match up every year, national exposure, helps recruiting, finances, looks good!

It’s a good rivalry and it’ll always be a tough game for both teams especially with our new defensive coordinator and a honking big offensive line, we won’t know how to act dominating the red zone by running straight at our opponents!

Dabo is going to win some more National Championships at Clemson as long as he continues to coach, we are blessed to have him, not a perfect coach but just maybe the best underdog college coach ever!

Sounds like Ole Frank liked variety in the schedule with all those name teams. I'm not so sure about locking into the same stale non con schedule every year. Going to become routine and boring.

The Georgia series in the 70s and 80s was absolutely never ever boring. That time period is why Georgia is still my number one most hated team we play. Those games were always great!!!

Of course Clemson-Georgia is never boring. We are very close border rivals.

IMO Clemson-ND (multiple states away from one another) will never be that type of rivalry where most of our fans don't live or work around ND fans.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I don't give a #### about seeing CU play ND every year. Twice every six years with someone else in the off years was more appealing.

Can't stand this new football world where two schools hundreds of miles from one another just "decide" to call themselves a rivalry. Yeah right!

Great article! Appreciate the history lesson of the 1977 & 79 games and who the official visitors were in ‘77. What a game that was!

Yes a very good article David and I appreciated the back story. This should be a good series between ND and Clemson because most of the time they are competitive.

Great games. I attended the '77 game (if I recall correctly, it was an overcast, wet and chilly afternoon). Heartbreaking loss at the end. However, the '79 game was the opposite for an exciting finish. Again, if I recall correctly, we watched the game on a big screen in "Edgar's", the bar in the old Student Union. They could serve beer on campus back then. When B. Lott ran the sidelines for the winning TD, we went crazy, just about took the place apart. Go Tigers.

I had moved to Pa for a new job. We were going to a nearby town for some shopping. I was looking for a radio station and found this game. Heard some of the player names and realized it was ND at DV playing Clemson in 1977. In those days Mutual I think carried ND games on the radio nationally. I then spent the next couple hours in the car w the wife and our new daughter riding around listening to the game and then went shopping later.

For you younger poasters- no internet a very few Clemson games on the radio back then. Here are some highlights-

Another fact about that '77 game is two of the players on the field that day were Joe Montana and Dwight Clark who would go on to make their 49er's team a legend. Another Tiger player that joined them on the 49er's was Jim Stuckey.

Attended both 77 & 79 games which meant a lot to Clemson.

Tigers were playing better ball overall in 1977 game but Fuller & a RB had crucial fumbles that allowed an on-the-bench player due an to earlier injury to come into game..

Named Joe Montana..

To run some power plays which allowed Irish to go ahead in 4th quarter when down by 3.

This is the game that Joe and Dwight Clark became acquainted and later hooked up in Candlestick for The Catch.

Small world~

A side light to that game was Dan Devine and his whining about the noise in Death Valley being a problem to the national outlets. At the beginning of the season the ACC didn't think this game was top tier so the officiating crew originally assigned was not the top crew. But as national attention grew it was decided to switch the crew to the top officiating crew.

If the ND -SoCal rivalry is coming to a close due to the Trojans joining the B1G , we would do well to fill that void.

Like it or not week in and week out the ND game is routinely a much anticipated matchup. That's why they and they alone can afford doing things their way.

Unless and until that changes I want to cash in on that relationship as long as possible.

I don't like it either but right now money is a critical factor , especially if you're a member of the ACC.

Stop for just one minute and ask yourselves are other members of the ACC envious of Clemson and our unique value to college football ?

You bet they are. The best is yet to come
